This week’s Eid special episode of the Indie’N Folk Project, presents the ghazal maestro Talat Aziz, the soulful voice behind masterpieces such as ‘Mujhe Tum Nazar Se,’ ‘Phir Chiddi Raat,’ ‘Chahenge Tujhe Par Kabhi,’ ‘Zindagi Jab Bhi,’ and ‘Ab Kya Ghazal Sunaoon,’ among many others. In a candid and unfiltered conversation, we warmly welcome our distinguished guest to the studio.
The lighthearted dialogue begins with Talat Aziz and Peeyush discussing the simple pleasures of tea, leading into a ‘chai pe charcha’ about the myriad conversations that can unfold over a cup of tea. Talat Aziz commends our host Peeyush on his proficiency in Urdu, praising his linguistic skills.
As the conversation progresses, Peeyush humorously points out the striking resemblance between Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Talat Aziz, noting that their youthful appearances make them seem ageless.
Talat Aziz reminisces about his early days as a pace bowler in cricket, recalling an incident from India’s World Cup in 1975 in England. He shares a backstage encounter where a team member noted his resemblance to Imran Khan, marking the first time he heard of the future leader. He also recounts Imran Khan’s visit to India in 1983. When Peeyush inquires about Talat Aziz's political ambitions, he swiftly declines, affirming his dedication to music.
Peeyush further probes Talat Aziz on Rahat Indori’s comment that one must be ‘bachchalan’ to appreciate ghazals, seeking his views on the current state of ghazal as an art form. Talat fondly refers to ghazals as ‘shayari,’ reminiscing about his collaborations with legends like Jagjit Singh, Mehdi Hassan, and Ghulam Ali.
Discussing the diminishing practice of riyaaz among singers, Talat shares his commitment to teaching students through structured lessons, preserving the legacy of his mentor Ustaad Mehdi Hassan.
Reflecting on his family, Talat mentions his son, known as ‘Mischief,’ who is into hip hop, a stark contrast to his own musical genre. He supports his son’s passion and excellence in his chosen field. His other son, who pursued law academically, has taken up photography professionally, following his heart.
Coming from a family with diverse talents, ranging from painting and photography to ghazals and hip hop, Talat emphasises the importance of identifying one’s calling and honing their skills to achieve success.
Talat Aziz shares a delightful interaction with the legendary Asha Bhosle, who once remarked that his voice has a ‘shareef’ or innocent quality, leaving him speechless.
Talat recounts a memorable concert at Mall of India, Bangalore, during Ramzan, where he was moved by the audience’s enthusiastic participation, singing along to his performance, reflecting his enduring legacy in ghazal music.
Upon our request, Talat Aziz graciously performs his mesmerising ghazal from the movie ‘Umrao Jaan,’ titled ‘Zindagi Jab Bhi,’ discussing the lyrical nuances.
Continuing, Talat Aziz shares an anecdote about his dinner with the legendary Farooq Sheikh, highlighting Sheikh’s generosity and humility.
Talat also recounts amusing fan interactions, including one with a grandmother who falsely claimed to be his schoolmate, despite him attending an all-boys school. He humorously notes many such instances, laughing off his fading memory of events.
Blessing us with his heavenly vocals once more, Talat Aziz performs ‘Niyat-e-Shaq,’ explaining the essence of this ghazal. Peeyush then seeks Talat Aziz’s thoughts on the use of technology and AI in the music industry. He shares a fun incident where his daughter morphed his voice note into a rendition of a Frank Sinatra song, stressing the importance of lifelong learning for artists.
Concluding the interview, Peeyush asks about the price Talat Aziz has paid for his popularity and immense fan following. Talat shares his philosophy of pursuing what you love and not succumbing to the allure of fame.
