I could not click fast enough Paul. These are some of my favorite videos. It is quite fantastic to hear praise outside of the big three, which means higher quality for more, and more quality to go around. Kevin Gray alone, when does the man sleep. I am instantly intrigued by that Ahmad Jamal album. It was the first one I ever got and have gone through 3 looking for a pristine. I might have to spring for that one. I'm luke warm with Jamal, but as you said that album is special. Glad it got the treatment it deserves.

Dig the haircut, Paul! I can hear the parakeet in the back! Nice to hear! Ooo, love me some drum solos! Have to admit, seeing a Breakdance comp made me chuckle a little bit! That Strand of Oaks...really sounds phenomenal and I'm going to make it a point to finally sample more. I had written it down months ago. It's so terrible that at this point I'm having trouble even getting to listen to records considering how busy it's been. Enjoyed learning more about Trutone and the website looks really informative and I like how the equipment is explained and laid out on there. Really excited to hear what other video offerings you will share in the future since you mentioned you have many ideas floating! 😁🙌🏻

The haircut...ha, ha, it's the wife's COVID special. I invested in $50 clippers at Costco back in 2020 and I've been having her do it ever since. She's had about enough it though and I'll soon be going to the hair salon to have it done. Wow! That's funny about the parakeet. When I edited this one, I had my PC speakers on low. He must have been going a bit crazy. I think you would enjoy the Strand of Oaks album but I also hear you on drowning in music. This year I am trying to be extremely conservative. I am trying to limit myself to one good record per week if I can help it. Still thinking about how best to attack my next couple of videos... Great to see you again Paul, get those other videos done sharpish, we’re waiting. Another very decent ‘every day’ mastering engineer is James Plotkin who does many of Rocket Recordings releases. Not AAA obviously but really decent digital, new music, mastering.

Hmmm....James Plotkin. That's not a bad idea for a future video. I have a number of Rocket Recordings and personally, I am not dismissive of digital. Hi Paul. I never really check to see where my albums were pressed unless I see a video on them like this one. But I did notice after looking up a few that I have a Trutone Howling Wolf pressing from 1976 . Part of the Chess Blues Master Series. Now you got me curious again. I got to start looking up this stuff. I don't know if you saw my new video yet. But I did a short review on the DCC Pet Sounds pressing from 1995. I was really disappointed in the sound and it rates very high among the collectors. I would love to know what you think about it. Well done P~ Rob/Boston
@BarakaPDub

Thanks Rob. You're right about the Chess Blues Masters. A lot of the Chess reissue work went to Trutone. Argo, being a subsidiary of Chess, was one of the reasons they likely did this Ahmad Jamal LP. I am going to have to check out your video. I thought I caught it but I don't remember you talking about the DCC Pet Sounds. I am surprised it didn't sound good. I wonder if it's because of where it was pressed?

And playing catch up with everyone's videos continues.... here I am. LOVING that you did another one of these. I have a '58 stereo press of At the Pershing. I would love to have a copy of the Remaster. Ya know Paul, one Mastering House (here in the North Los Angeles area - Ventura, CA) - Golden Mastering - comprised of veteran mastering engineer John Golden, his son, mastering engineer JJ Golden, and his daughter, mastering engineer April Golden. Golden Mastering has a catalog that spans more recent big recordings but nevertheless iconic and amazingly respected engineering house. I would love more than anything to see a Tales of the Deadwax on Golden Mastering. ...Green Day, Left Lane Cruiser, El Perro (not sure if you've seen this new release but it's all the rave), Calexico, Suicidal Tendencies, Adolescents, Watson Twins, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Black Pumas, Primus, Stereolab, Soundgarden, Ty Segall, Thin Lizzy, Nine Inch Nails, Nora Jones, Chris Cornell, Nirvana (MTV Unplugged Remaster), The Killers, Wolfmother, Beck, Helmet, Papa Roach, Limp Bizkit, Blink 182, Rob Zombie, Lady Gaga, Boz Skaggs, Counting Crows, Almost Famous SdTrk, Monophonics, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings (in fact almost all the Daptone stuff), Band Of Horses, Melvins.... AND MORE. I really think you are the man to highlight this mastering house. I've done work with them in the past, and the huge project that my production company is about to start is going to use them for the mastering as well. Cheers! - TONE

It is good to hear about some younger people doing quality mastering. Too many of the people everyone covet are getting up there in age, it’s time for the next wave of engineers to step up and lead the industry forward. Breakdance, that was an interesting choice, it’s about the sound though.

My thoughts on Half Speed Mastering have been mixed. IMO, Abbey Road is terrible. Sean McGee in particular has butchered the sound of a lot of records. Miles Showell has been a bit of mixed bag for me and it might be worthwhile doing a video covering it. For me, the Half Speed Mastering has become more hype than anything else. Bernie Grundman and Kevin Gray have been quite outspoken against that method of cutting records.
