Totally agree. In my opinion the golden Phish years were those right before Jerry's death in '95. After that the Dead scene that had become really toxic simply migrated over. If you were lucky enough to be catching shows in '93 and '94 it was clear as day. I remember a late summer run through the northwest in Aug. '93. They played small theaters. There was no lot scene to speak of. After each show Trey and at least one or two other guys from the band (usually Mike or Page) would simply be outside the venue out in the lot talking to fans. There would only be maybe a dozen people chilling there talking to them, never more than 20. This was after every show. Then Jerry died and everyone from Dead tour simply jumped onto Phish tour, and it blew up from there.

My gf was never a fan until I played her Waste (which she LOVES) and If I Could, and Sample In a Jar, and several more. I took her to a show in Camden and we had tons of fun and she was in shock at how awesome the Phish lots in Camden are.

But I ended up WINNING A PAIR OF TICKETS ON JAMBASE. For the 2nd of 3 nights at Deer Creek. So a friend and I drove the 2 hours west, got 2 doses each (fractals) and I just had a feeling they'd play Gumbo because they had played a good one there in 98. And the one they played was incredible. Best jam I heard that summer. That Deer Creek 03 Gumbo is up there with Star Lake 97 (my first show) for best ever

Love the pittsburgh dude, my first show was 3/11/88 but I agree with him in that up until say Jerry's death everyone was younger east coast college kids, I think a darker element crept into the lot post Jerry death. They weren't deadheads and they weren't phishheads they just wanted to sell nitrous and do heroin. I know Phish got banned from Lake Placid after dec 95 shows because of needles found at an elementary school. They could have been anybody but again before that it was really kind of nerdy college kids using the internet who like how fucked up phish was and heard about the shenanigans on phish.net and rec.music.phish. long live RMP

That there is. Bad apples...Same thing happened to the Dead in 87 after Touch of Grey hit #8 on the pop charts. All of a sudden the scene got too big. Lots of people (vendors included) toured for the party. They lost RedRocks, the Greek, and only came back to Hampton for 2 years of 8 before Jerry passed. It (shit) happens. Amazing the parallels tho. I wonder how many people move east for Phish proximity like we all moved west in the late 80s to the Bay Area for Dead consumption? I’ve still never seen Phish on the east coast (tho I’m from DC). Your movie tho!!!! Has made me change my mind and as soon as another NYE run happens, I’m Mail ordering. I was truly bummed to have not been able to catch my Eugene/Gorge 5 this last summer. Would have put me at 25 Phish shows (1st Salem OR 12/1/94). Saw 115 Dead but most of those were pre kids! It makes a difference. Now my kids would go with me to Phish. I mean, they grew up as their favorite phish song being several versions of Harpua. This is around 8 and 10. They are now 29 and 31. Nuff said. Love Phish!!! Miss em bad. Thanks 🙏 again for the doc.

My first show on the day of my 18th birthday was in MTSU basketball arena... Murfreesboro, TN... I got lucky and found a floor ticket and ended up on the rail on Page side... Love it

It's interesting that the first guy you talk to mentioned the Dead ending in '95 , and then jumping to Phish after that. Unfortunately the dark side of the Dead tour came over to the Phish scene at that time and changed it for the worse. It used to be a lot better in the early , mid 90's before all the opportunists ruined it and turned it into a circus.
