In_equality Colloquium: "Is Inequality the Problem?"
Tuesday, 7 May 2024, 15:00 - 16:30
In this talk, Lane Kenworthy (University of California San Diego) presents his latest research, in which he examines the experience of the rich democratic nations in the era of high and rising income inequality, from 1979 to 2019. Going beyond the ethical and normative arguments that high levels of inequality are inherently unfair, Professor Kenworthy assesses whether income inequality has tangible harmful effects on a range of outcomes, including living standards, democracy, opportunity, longevity, and happiness. He critically evaluates the "inequality-is-harmful" hypothesis to determine its validity and implications for policy and society.
