The speed of sound is different in different media. Normally we produce speech using a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen gas. Here we experiment with changing the gas that is passing through our vocal tract. Helium has a speed of sound that is roughly 2.5 times faster than that of air, while sulfur hexafluoride has a speed of sound roughly half that of air.
Inhaling each gas creates a dramatic change in the sound of our voices.
These gases do not provide oxygen, so repeated inhalation would result in a reduction of oxygen flowing to your brain. Do not try this experiment at home or with helium balloons at parties.
