The best kind of organizing is when you realize you don't need another bookshelf/tote/dresser/etc. because you got rid of enough stuff to get everything to fit in the storage you already have.

I agree! I got rid of some clothing, and now I just have a small closet with one side filled with hanged clothing and one of those hanging organizers. Got rid of a dresser and a night stand. I'm about to put a 9 space cube bookcase, and I don't think there's even going to be much miscellany put in there. It feels so awesome not having damn clutter anymore!!

I'm not a naturally organized person. After 40 years of adult life, I know that I'll never be organized. So, in order for my home to be as neat and tidy as I dream of, I'm going to have to just plain pare down. It's painful; I spent decades collecting beautiful things, but mostly they sit in boxes in the basement! But I still want them. Soooo, I'm going to work on getting rid of stuff I don't care about any more. That's plenty to start with. I've been keeping stuff that's just stupid to keep, like who really needs 100 items of clothing you haven't worn in 30 years? Ok, I'm officially embarrassed now. 🤗

So true about the organizing vs. downsizing. We had to move three times in this last year. Finally quit the habit of just packing everything neatly into the linen closet and shutting it away when we now KNOW those items weren’t ever used at the last two addresses. Saves room in the moving truck for the next place 😪

I do not consider myself a minimalist by any means. But I hit a sudden realization about a year ago if I ever need to just pack up and leave, I can't. Because of all the stuff I have. Not just in my home, but in storage. I just felt overwhelmed by everything: Emotional baggage and physical baggage. I was holding onto things out of guilt and didn't know how to part with it. That's when I found your videos and a few others and that's just pushed me to keep going. I only message a few friends when I'm going through things to get a quick "You can do it!" when I'm slowing down. It was such a feeling of power and happiness going through Target (I love/hate, too), seeing this wonderful container, walking around with it, and then putting it back saying "I want it, but I don't need it." Big accomplishment.

Hey Alexis E. I just saw your message, I'm not sure if this will help, but this is what I do. After I have removed a lot of stuff, I look around the room and make a clear mental note of the look and feel I want from the room now. Then before I decide to bring anything new in, I simply ask myself, does this match what I want in here? I also wait about 2 months and sit with the idea before I buy anything or bring new things in. In that time I work out if I really want it or not or is it even needed. That buffer of time, normally gives me time to realize I don't normally need it :) hugs Kat xx

Alexis E. The one-in-one-out rule has helped me a lot, now that I'm completely where I want things to be. If I want to buy something, I ask, "then, what will go? If you are happy with what you already have, then what will go, if you buy this?" Not always, but often, I won't buy the item, bc I don't want anything to go.

First of all..Loving the haircolor. That really makes your eyes POP! Also..I really enjoyed these points and I've come to realize alot of these things as well. One thing that struck me though is...I always want to push back on calling myself a minimalist because I don't fit the typlical mold. I like hom decor..I like my house to feel cozy and warm and...hygge. But yet..I purged A LOT. And I like the way my home feels now. So in that sense..I do feel like a minimalist. But if someone were to ask me..I would probably say no I'm not. There is just too much of a stigma about what it is supposed to look like for me to say that in good conscience.

#5 is SOOOO true. I’ve definitely found it to be the case with my minimalism journey and it’s even worse now that my family is doing a ‘no spend challenge’ for the entire 2018 calendar year (only spending money on necessary bills, groceries, gas, home & vehicle maintenance, small gifts for family milestones, and the kids’ required school supplies). That gets some really weird looks when it comes up in conversation. Like minimalism, people see it as a sad, threatening thing instead of as an opportunity for personal growth.

Yes, I agree. And again, I don't want to judge anyone's idea of 'how much stuff is right' - because at the end of the day we all need to be content in our own lives and shoes. But that being said, I do feel the idea/term often ruffles feathers for people who know they have a lot of 'stuff'. ;-) Somethings are best left alone... hehe

Long or short, I always look forward to watching your videos. Last year, hubby, daughter and I have downsized to a 1,600 sq ft one floor home from a 2,000 sq ft multi level one. Even downsized the land, lawn and gardening space. I just want to hang with friends, spend time with family, do stuff with my dogs, and do my hobbies/cooking when home from work. Getting rid of things, while sometimes stressful, is fun to make money. Sometimes it's even habit forming. Since then, life is so much easier. While my house might not look like all that, it's certainly less to clean and deal with. Works for me!

I consider 2016 to have been "The Year of the Great Declutter" for me. I started Marie Kondo's book early in that year, and I've gone from being a very messy hoarder to what I would consider a minimalist. Still working to be tidy. I think the number 1 lesson I learned is that it really helps to have a reason for simplifying. It can be any reason, as long as it works for you. My reason was (and still is) this: I just want an easy to clean space. I hate cleaning and tidying, and I'm actually not too fond of how decluttering feels in the moment either. But more than all that, I love to know I can handle my responsibility to keep my place decent. Lived in? Sure, but at least it's sanitary and easier to make progress. By the way, it does get easier. It's freaking hard in the beginning, but it really does get manageable at some point. Thank you for continuing to inspire me and others :)

Thank you for your encouragement! I agree with you. Have a vision in mind sets the goal point for working up the courage to let go. For those like me who are attached to their items, it is very hard to clear out a space, even though it's the best thing we can do for ourselves....to become free. And it difficult to easily clean a space that has many items on it. I believe in circulating items. Instead of having five pieces of decoration to clean at one time, I'd rather keep only a couple. If the space doesn't take a whole lot of shuffling around objects to clean, then I will be more likely to clean it. Otherwise I put it off for another day, which rarely arrives.

Denise Marie I was and still am very attached to most of my items. In fact, even with all I've let go of, I still have at least one item I hide in a box out of guilt (it is a hand made outfit that doesn't fit, but is too unique to donate without getting caught) but most items I've kept have become more beautiful to me. I could let go of most of them if I needed to, but I like keeping them. Also, despite having an emotional attachment to my items, I don't regret letting any of them go. I hope your journey goes well!

Beauty Beholder it's funny, because I did and do feel the same. I like visual abundance (I drool over perfectly organized, yet completely filled, small spaces, lol) but I simply couldn't handle having so much stuff. I'm not usually a very tidy person, though I could be in the right setting, so I agree: having less makes me less overwhelmed. Also, I too have been decluttering even after 2016. Just last week or so I let go of two bookcases. I thought I'd never let them go (they belonged to my father) but I found I just didn't want them anymore. Now that they're gone my space feels much more free, and I don't need to dust the empty bookcases. So yeah, despite being overly attached to things, I feel better than I did before. And a lot less guilt too! I'm still decluttering now and then, but the benefits are so very worthwhile.

It's like chipping away at a mountain side. I cannot do it all at once. It did not get there all at once! Paper is especially a chore. Because there is so much of it while it takes up so little space, it doesn't seem like I make much progress. But I will continue to eat my elephant with one bite at a time. It's such a mind game because I fail myself before I even begin. I am tired of making excuses for my collection of tactile memories. I need to take charge of my things and my life. With Trepidation & Melancholy alive in my mind, may Courage & Strength overfill my heart; for then will Change appear. THANK YOU for being a help!

( annnnd to fill 2 recycling bins with papers to purge!) . It took energy & thought to sort and pack it. When I came home after donating, things did not seem to look that different to me over all ! But that’s okay - I know I’ve been making progress. I DO realize that my closets have been emptier for about a year now, and I’ve continued to empty them in the time since! Ahhhhh .... clothes really are the easiest thing to purge. Books & papers are harder! It feels so liberating to box or bag up items, and send them on their way ! I say, “I’m downsizing and going through things in my home” ! I usually hear, “oh nice, I need to do that” Note, I’m not a minimalist and minimalism is not my goal, I’m getting rid of things I don’t need or don’t want to make my living style easier, more simple and free’er of burdens. I agree that there is no definition, no rule, no set number of items that can be owned but for some reason there are people out there that will judge you by that definition, I see it in the comments of several youtubers 🙄 I appreciate your realistic approach and view !!

Well, and because my husband and I are planning to move to another country soon! Your videos have been so helpful in deciding what's worth keeping or not. We are putting some things in storage and the 20-20 rule you mentioned in another video has been really helpful with that! But when you said restriction, it really resonated with me. My idea of minimalism (for now at least), is having the ability to pick up and move whenever I want, and right now all of my belongings are restricting me of that dream.

My new years resolution this year was to de-clutter my home and get rid of all the un-necessary stuff and junk and this is the first resolution that I have kept and done! Last week I found out that we have to move house and now this will be so much easier and less stressful to do without all the stuff we had. Minimalism to me is having only what I absolutely need and love, less is definitely more! I'm almost done with my de-cluttering and it has been a journey of mixed emotions but I do feel so much better for doing this and becoming my sort of Minimalist. Thank you so much for your great and informative videos .k

I agree with what your saying, every de-cluttering method gives both good and bad advice, each method will help and cause problems, most advice is not absolute, its hard work and exhausting to declutter and emotionally draining, but (consistently) removing possessions out of the home is seriously the way forward and deciding what remains in your home is your choice only, why because its your home and your life, don,t make it any harder or more difficult than that. and circumstance and life changes all the time, so do what best for yourself to achieve what you want and be good with that, contentment is a good thing, thats what i am learning right now with love Jacqueline

Target is my frienemy too! That dollar spot gets me all the time. I have started shopping there less and doing the "buy online and pick up" so I can avoid walking through the store and looking at all the pretties.

I call myself a recovering hoarder so when I take a load of stuff to the thrift shop to donate and then go into work I'm happy and I tell my work mates. They think I'm funny anyway and I don't mind giving someone a laugh. Laughter is so good for us! Biggest thing I've learnt is to celebrate every time u get rid of a box or bag or car load because it's a great achievement. Secondly don't buy things. Just stop buying stuff u don't need. And lastly don't give yourself a time limit because if u don't meet it you'll b down on yourself. Instead as long as u r moving forward by gradually getting rid of things and not adding things u don't need then u r achieving your goal.😀

I love how you say that there is no definition. My husband isn’t a minimalist. He loves his souvenirs, games and has a tv in his man cave. It was hard for me to accept that we both have different needs

Omg, yes! I distinctly remember being in a mingling/social setting at work, and I was fresh off of a big declutter and super motivated! I was telling a colleague about how accomplished I felt, and how I realized "why, if I have 30 pairs of shoes but only wear 10 would I ever have that many?! Get it out of there!" and I totally got the ".......huh." blank stare. LOSER! Haha

What I learn in my journey is that it is better not to have extra storage space if you want to live a minimal life. As long as I have that space I can always put away the stuff without considering if I need them or not :)

So nice to hear that you too had those issues. It feels like I've been minimizing forever. But I enjoy getting rid of 1 thing a day at least.

First off, yey for another video! Missed you!! 1: Another KZitemr went through the same expirence but she found that it was a mind life, having peace of mind, been content in the your space. If that makes sense. 2: Totally agree with you on the organizing, as you might go out and buy 6 boxes to orgainze something, then find out you only need 2 cause you got rid of so much junk, then you've got 4 other boxes and nothing to do with them. My downfall shop is The Range (don't know if you have them where you live). 3: Oh yes big changes take time, been coming up to a year for me, got rid of sooo much stuff but still have soo much to go through! I think when it takes longer you tend to see something you already went through just laid on the side to re think about it. I wish I had taken photo's of my before I feel that would have given me that extra push to feeling better about how far I've come. 4: Craft things, shinny things are totally my set backs. 5: I've always thought about that thanks to Phoebe from Friends, Phoebe: Why do you care? Rachel: Because they're people. Phoebe: But people that you don't know and will never see again. If it is people I know (I keep my 'circle' very small), my best friend tends to ask if she can go through it before I give it away (she takes a whole load of my clothes haha), the rest seem to know I'm trying to live a simpler home life so I can live the rest of it, does that make sense? The KZitemr I was on about in number 1 said she re-moved herself from certain people as she felt they were always trying to drag her down, the 'toxic' people. Sorry for the long comment, tend to do that a lot haha.

I personally don’t care about what people may think, but I actually have a very good explanation: I am reorganizing my home and my stock. Since I have a shop, it makes sense, I better should organize all this as objects come to me for free. I don’t know what it is with me, but I don’t buy anything anymore and people bring me stuff. I started saying no, and they started leaving valuable things in front of my door. I am an objects magnet, I have to sort, declutter, donate, throw away or sell, since it’s my job, all the time. At the beginning, it was funny, now it is sometimes overwhelming, this is why now I really choose what is worth selling and I donate all the rest.

Do you think the people trust your judgment so much that they leave objects with you? It's a gift and a curse at the same time! I checked out your KZitem page and you have posted some nice crafting/art ideas. : )

Woaw, thank you, KZitem is for sure a little community. I have no idea why people are leaving their objects to me, maybe they feel that I like the history of each object? It was the same in France. In Paris, I could find treasures just in the street in front of my door. It is true that I know how to restore most of the things, for sure it helps. But I must stop this thing a little, because I need my own empty space too... Thank you for having checked my page... And we are here on a wonderful channel, I love the Messy Minimalist's videos!

Excellent Rachel .... thank you .... you covered many relevant emotions for me ... I don't think I have really begun the journey beyond thinking about it and imagining the good feelings that come with less baggage .. my small beginning is when in temptations way i.e. out shopping, I ask myself questions like "do I really need this" "have I got one like this already that I am not using but saving (usually clothing with this question) ... "if I don't buy this one now I will regret it and never find it again and at such a good price" (this one is such a hook to buy AnD such a lie which I have learnt to speak back too - "of course I can find this again and if I r e a l l y need it, then it won't matter if I miss this bargain and pay a little more. I also try to picture my room and its contents in my head and that sometimes empowers me to say no and walk away. Love you Rachel )))))

Insightful you are! On the minimalist journey I've had a few regrets. Getting rid of a couple of items and not recognising earlier that I could customise minimalism to my specific needs. I should not have stressed over trying to achieve an ideal. It would be great to see you do a video about you having any regrets about letting go of some items and if so, then how you dealt with the regret.

Sooooo true the point about ....you think your space will suddenly look like a minimalist home.... all Pinteresty.... uh no!!! Just your house but less full..... oh.....um...... where are the white walls and the single cactus next to a bottle of water near a black cat whipping it's tail in a perfectly clear clean black and white only room??? Also the point about how long it takes..... you could never imagine how long that journey can be. It can take hours just sorting a few drawers xx love your vids xx ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ thanks for the chat 👍🏻

I think a lot of people feel that anxiety or general gross feeling about our belongings, and the "solution" is to acquire more stuff. Right? If we're not satisfied with what we have, then clearly we just need more. Obviously we have found out the hard way that that is just a short-term fix. Thanks for sharing your journey! I definitely relate.

We missed you Rachel. It's all so true. I love to hate watching those videos where people get rid, tidy up and then go out and buy new funny shaped lights and pale pink book covers and hunks of crystal and amber glass bottles. You watch then and think wooooow, when I finish declittering I need to be surrounded by all that 'stuff' then you start looking where they bought it!!

Organizing doesn’t equal minimalism...that is a perfect description of me. I’ve never met a label maker I didn’t love. Some of my spaces look like the container store or Pinterest top ten list. My biggest problem is purging items, but feeling guilty about the money spent. I am positive I can sell it for $$$ old cords, phones, clothes, shoes etc....
