P-Bal, Jason and James are back Talkin' About the revived series of Doctor Who with Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper! [Episode review The Long Game]
I love this episode, I feel like the emotional beats of the story really helps sell the show to a new audience, which was absolutely the right call. Also loved Murray Gold's music which is stunning. Again on a shallow note, Paul is a lovely Daddy 😉😊👍 Thanks as always for your review gentlemen! ♥️

Great Talkin, as always! I actually think the Reapers are required to keep the younger audience interested and invested - and it shows an awareness from RTD about how the show should tailor itself to meet the various levels of the viewing public (or 'family audience'). As great as a story might be, the kids in the playground will pick up on the monsters.

Very true! They're actually quite a horrible looking creature too, which adds to the scares. Maybe it's the squark when they attack too?

I loved this story when it went out. It had that continuity with the dynamic between Seven and Ace that was done so well in Fenric, and developed in such a good way. This is Eccleston at his very best, as a supportive lead (like McCoy). When Rose tells her dad, “you would've been" is up there with Ace saying, “but I didn't know she was my mum." However this is where I think your fantastic point about quick magical fixes applies, and the weight of this story now being lessened by the wider arc. This story was incredible for allowing the viewer a very safe space to explore a key fantasy of grief, but then understand that things are as they are, and that they can't always be otherwise, despite these fantasies. In understanding this we can then be returned to the world in our mourning but with the ability to risk our love again in new investments that can move us on. The alternative dimension resolution pissed me off a bit because it took a much more retarded view of grief via wish-fulfilment, and soiled the great drama worked out here (#soileralert). All that said, Dr Who is pantomime in its best sense, so it can be forgiven very easily. I still love this story, and found it very difficult to watch when my son discovered it some time ago. The three of you are ace. Keep this great stuff coming. X

My only problem with the Reapers is they don't do what they are said to be, causing more chaos than anything. They just needed to be Eldritch "things" from beyond that are breaking through to our reality through the weakness caused by the time paradox

I think "one of the defining successes of this particular season" is the new "pinnacle". I guess that a pinnacle is 8.5 and a defining success is a 9 though.

@p-bal Myself also the programme just sailed to close to soap opera for me, like a lot of RTD's era but that's his style . I don't have any grumble with the Talkin About, as ever very entertaining.
