You are a wealth of information! I started sewing clothes in 1964 and there were periods I did not sew along but I have sewn a ton. I used to love the Jiffy patterns in the 60's I could get off the school bus and cut something cute out and wear it to school the next day. Back then Simplicity had the easiest patterns. As my skills improved I loved Butterick because of the more complex designs. I even ventured into Vogue. For many years McCall's and Simplicity were the more simple designs. Then I am not sure when Simplicity patterns and I did not gell. There were lots of errors in the patterns. A couple decades later they really upped their game. I also made some Burda and Kwik Sew but not a lot. For years I bought only on the sales and have boxes of patterns, many still uncut. When I want to make something i go thru my patterns and try to find one. Many patterns are timeless as you know. In my 40's I began tweaking patterns and made muslins. As of late I have started full blown pattern hacking. I really have very limited experience with the indie patterns but see lots of really cute designs. Like you I am sad that all the big companies are now sold by one company. I agree that they need to up their game if they want to remain. As always I love your channel and content.

This was an excellent explanation for what has been happening to the pattern industry. I hope people will appreciate your descriptions and analysis. It costs a lot of money to design, let alone produce and print, a pattern, and it may be that the person who complained does not have an understanding of the manufacturing process. Indies must be made in smaller lots, thus making each item higher in price. It's just the way of the world. There is a KZitem blog from Britain called The Fold Line, and the host features many Indie patterns with reviews, so it might be useful to give that KZitem Blog a look and listen. In the meanwhile, I always look forward to your videos, and thank you for all your hard work.

Thanks for the talk about Quik Sew! I started sewing before i knew how, the patterns fit pretty well at "my" beginning, probably in the 1950's. Then they changed the fit and i took a break and got my college degree in art. I have sewn clothing from time to time. I do purchase patterns and dont really sew everything i have patterns for.. I just love partterns. I have felt betrayed that the big 4 has been sold and now they are located in England. My interest is now with basically Vogue for exciting patterns and designers, along with a few indies. Still not much sewing. What i will do now is keep buying patterns, keep watching Joy for fitting advice and using the few i am used to over and over. You are priceless. Love, june

@@juneburrows5205 Thanks June! I agree about the Big 4; they’ve had such a convoluted path. How competitive can the legacy brands even be when they’re all owned by the same company?! And that’s a good thing - they keep the old brain churning with ideas!😃

Hi Viv. You know that I’m an indie fan and here are some of the reasons: 1) With some minor exceptions they are well drafted, tested multiple times by regular sewists and the instructions are usually very thorough with good photos and sometimes videos for any tricky parts. 2) The designer is often available by email or DM to answer questions. 3)PDF versions are usually ‘tiled’ so I can print two sizes on top of one another and grade appropriately (eg my waist is a larger size than my hips so I can print a 14 and 16 on the same piece and it’s easy to grade out). 4) Many indie designers post multiple hacks for their patterns making them flexible to create other looks. 5) Most are now very size inclusive making them a fan fave for my more ample sew sisters. 6) The big four are usually not much less expensive here in Canada. 7) Finally, I like supporting small businesses and feel like I’m getting good value at the same time - I get both when I buy and use indie patterns. And I support another small business in my area that prints PDF patterns so I don’t have to stick them together if I don’t want to. So there’s my reasons for being an indie fan. Not that I don’t sew some big four but it is fewer and fewer these days. Hope you are well my friend. Keep sewing!!
@vivmomsews4962

Hi Rhonda! And thank you for explaining “tiled,” I never understood that. I think it is fabulous that indie designers have found their place, and indeed just may pull ahead of Big 4 in popularity. They are exceedingly popular on Instagram. But I don’t want to lose Big 4 - it’s probably sentimental with me, and also just availability. If I wasn’t privy to these deep discounts, I would totally have to rethink things. Indies have done an excellent job of bringing in new sewers, writing comprehensive instructions, and giving the home sewer choices they otherwise wouldn’t have. Thanks for laying out the reasons you love them!

I know this is an old video, Vivien but I'm just getting bacfk to sewing clothing after a hiatus of many years. I really loved the quality of the KWIK SEW patterns from the heavy paper to the instructions. I remember back in the 70's taking a class at a fabric store here in NH and we made T-shirts. My first exposure to KWIK Sew and stretch fabrics was during the class. I learned to trace my size onto tracing fabric and make adjustments so that I had a pattern I could use over and over that fit me perfectly. I also remember buying a KWIK SEW baby book that I used to make clothes for my daughters. KWIK SEW was a great company.

I loved hearing all about the pattern companies! You are a great teacher and speaker! Plus, you have an awesome personality and great sense of humor. I wish so much that there was some kind of virtual museum-ish listing of all the patterns ever put out! I think that would be so fascinating! I'm your age, and when I was in elementary school, my mom got a Viking machine and started sewing using Kwik Sew. I have two younger sisters, and mom sewed our undies as well as all our daily clothes. I learned to sew using Kwik Sew. When I became a young mom, I inherited many of my mom's patterns. I made many of my babies' clothes, and kept sewing into their elementary years. I loved making my swimsuits from Kwik Sew. After awhile I put sewing aside except for occasional makes until early 2018 when I just happened upon a Vivmom video. By then I was an empty-nester, and I have since amassed a large collection of big four patterns, not to mention fabric. 😁 I love Butterick more than the others, and more recently, I've also really enjoyed New Look. As I've immersed myself in the online sewing community, I discovered indie patterns and have started trying some of those this last year. So far I have enjoyed them a lot. Mostly I love my virtual sewing friends/sisters on KZitem and Instagram. You are the ones who motivate me and help me with my sewing more than any pattern instruction sheet! 💜

I am 69, sewing since 9 y/o. I caught on very quickly and always looking for a challenge. I started with Simplicity then Butterick because the fitting for me seemed better. Being only 4 foot 11 inches meant that I really HAD to sew my own clothes. For expert suiting and gowns I went to Vogue. You were right about the challenge! I wanted to go to more difficult sewing techniques in design and tailoring which Vogue certainly did satisfy that itch. I sewed gowns and suits and sleepwear that nobody else seem to be sewing. I even at 17 was a national 4H contender by sewing a coat dress. I believe my biggest challenge was sewing an authentic Trench coat with all the embellishments. When fabric started to get more expensive I felt lucky to be short! Now that I retired...started sewing again...and shocked. No apparel fabric stores anymore. Patterns? All online and so expensive. Because of your great research I understand why and how things changed. Quilting is not my thing nor little projects to sell. I want to make clothes!! Seems things that are available are geared mostly for quilters now. Yeah I am disappointed about the direction of things now. I believe your channel and others similar to yours will have an impact on the future of apparel sewing positively. Keep up the good work Vivmom!! Love your channel!!

I have noticed that the big four patterns have suffered greatly since they merged to one company. Not only do the independent pattern companies have minimal views to sew but also Ifind that the big four also don’t have all the variety of views that they used to have. I think the styles today are very loose fitting not form fitted clothes and that’s just what our lifestyle is now. I am also seen a lot of repeated patterns from years ago that are repeated in the new books. And I don’t really see too much that really inspire me. I’m not sure if it’s because of my age and that I’ve been sewing for a long time but I think I’ve seen everything or it’s just the way the styles are now with Covid. I find that the prices of patterns are very expensive and I am in the US so I wait until we have those big pattern sales. I still love to sew garments but I think the creativity is lacking. I miss Kwik Sew garment patterns.

You make some great points, Julie. I’ve heard many complaints about the recent releases from Big 4 being ho-hum or just plain dull. I happen to like dull and shapeless🤣so I don’t mind, but even I agree that there isn’t much variety. McCall’s has decided that they draft for a young, trendy demographic - I couldn’t be taken seriously in their recent designs at all. I just hope Big 4 hasn’t fallen into terrible management. It must be a roller coaster to work there.

Thank you for doing this video. I have quite a few of the big 4 patterns, however, they are very expensive in the UK. Even when on sale, they are still expensive. I have stopped buying them. Sometimes their instructions are shocking and even when I have contacted them to query an instruction, they are all but useless. Last year I started to buy the independent patterns. Yes they are equally expensive, if not more than the big 4. However, their instructions and sizing and quality of paper are so much better than the big 4. I understand completely why you would continue to buy your patterns from the big 4 because of the price you can get them for but for me, I am slowly weening myself off them and sticking to a few patterns that I like and just making them over and over again. Thanks again for your great video. X

Viv for president 😂😂No seriously Viv this video is so informative. I’m sorry the big four are possibly merging into one and the Kwik sew legacy has been bought out. You are so lucky in the USA. I have never purchased a cheap pattern in the uk or material for that matter. Here in the uk it’s not a cheap hobby and very few people sew in my area. My daughter is 26 now and did ballet tap and jazz from 3 years. There was nobody available out of the hundreds of mums to help with sewing costumes (grandmas maybe) some mums even refused to sew ribbons or elastic on their daughters ballet shoes. I would literally help with nearly all the costumes. Kwik Sew was my go to patterns for leotards and lyrical costumes. I’m sad that this company will all but disappear. I have many proud moments of making costumes for my daughter dancing so for me it was a labour of love. Im glad you’ve discovered the Great British Sewing Bee. I have seen a resurgence in interest as a result and my friends and I eagerly await the programme every week. You’re channels have inspired me to sew for me and learn new techniques. So keep em coming I thoroughly enjoy your lovely nature and positivity 👍

I live in Indonesia and consider myself an intermediate sewist. I came into sewing about 10years ago when I took a class on pattern drafting in a local Esmod school. I went to the US last summer and got to admire the humongous drawers of commercial patterns in HobbyLobby and Walmart! I do feel that a lot of those patterns are basic enough that I can draft it myself. And the advantage of drafting it myself is numerous: 1. Most importantly, the clothes actually fit me (&my kids) very well, no alteration to the pattern needed. 2. There is no need for printing out, waiting for pattern to arrive on mail, or tracing out the pattern (as in online indie patterns, internet orders, or sewing magazines). At one time, I had to cut out more than 10cms off the Center Front and Center Back of a burdastyle magazine pattern just to make a sensibly size garment of my bust measurement. You would have thought the youtube vids that the magazine would put out would be on garments whose construction is more difficult, but nahh.. their youtube vids are more on the simple garments. I buy UK burdastyle magazine locally, if I see designs that I like from youtube flipthroughs. It’s the only locally available sewing magazine. I am also willing to try Patrones magazine on their app when I find something interesting. When I deem myself ready to alter other commercial patterns again. Judging from the pics, their construction is also somewhat basic. In short, the commercial patterns I’d consider buying are the Advanced patterns, i.e. ones that require more complex construction, or have complex shape or seamlines. As of the shapeless patterns, I am less interested in. I just want to add, I really enjoy your videos: the construction vids, the opinion vids, and your garmet modeling vids! You’re a big inspiration!

That was amazing Viv. Excellent discussion and very informative. I have been sewing for many years and have noticed the change in dynamics of the patterns over the years. I agree they are definitely not the quality or the informative tools they used to be. One pattern i used a lot was called STYLE. I used to love those patterns. I live in Australia and here there is one major sewing store. It's called Spotlight. Sometimes the patterns go on sale for $6 or so. When you browse through the books you find a pattern that you really like, but it is unavailable both in store and online. Very frustrating. Fabrics here are very expensive as well. If this Covid ever settles down and the international borders are open again, my dream is to come to the USA and stock up. I really enjoyed you segment on this topic. You speak very well and with real passion about sewing. So enjoyable. It's a shame that even our precious sewing world has been tampered with all for the sake of $$$$ and to people who know really nothing about our craft and the expertise and love that goes into what we do. I will go on line, look at what is available or trending for the season and am able to duplicate the patterns within my system, I receive quarterly suppliments to add to my collection all taking-up very little space. There is an article on the Threads website - looks like McCalls and Kwik Sew merged in late 2011. Which makes sense - as I remember the merger around the time I was sewing toddler PJs (I used a kwik sew pattern for them). I am also very disappointed that the big four have decided to make kwik sew a craft line. All very interesting information!

Thank you so much for all the interesting information. I started sewing Kwik sew patterns in the late 80’s and fell in love with them. When I would go home to visit family in NH a couple times a year I always went to a family owned fabric shop that carried kwik sew patterns 40% off and would buy at least 10 every time. I have boxes of them . Kwik Sew patterns were the best fitting patterns.

I’ve really enjoyed your video today. I am in the UK where we have to pay about 14 dollars for Simplicity, McCalls etc and even more for Vogue patterns. I quite like downloading PDFs from Indie designers and have been pretty happy with their very detailed instructions and sizing. I love watching The Great British Sewing Bee and am sorry it’s difficult for you to be able to watch in the USA. Just want to say how much I look forward to all of your videos, when I look down my subscription list and see a “Vivmom Sews” there, I’m straight in with a smile on my face! Thank you lots x

I no longer enjoy sewing a Big 4 pattern anymore, for the opposite reasons I mention below. My favorite indie company is Love Notions out of Illinois. The sizes included per pattern is: adult men XS-3 or 4X, adult women size XS-5X and kids size 2T-16 (some exceptions). Each of their patterns often include several style options such as 3 lengths (short, capris, pants...top, tunic, dress...) and every sleeve design you can think of (up to 9 in one pattern) as well as FBA pieces. Their patterns run $5-12 (some free) and they have a $5 feature Friday pattern. They also have sewing tutorials on techniques that might be more challenging such as a henley placket. The last pattern I bought from Love Notions included 4 different tops, 2 dress options, 6 different sleeve options and a full bust option, all in size XS-5X. Like getting at least 4 patterns for $12. (Although I got it for $5 on feature Friday). I like that you have the option to print only the size(s) you need, but you get all the other sizes. I sew for 8 (soon to be 9) grandkids, and several of my adult kids and kids-in-law, so the multiple sizes are awesome.

Wow, that’s a real endorsement for Love Notions, Deb. I have heard great things about them, and I see a lot of them on Instagram. It really is nice to have so many choices. (Unlike when remodeling a kitchen, and the choices can almost make one catatonic.) So many different options in one pattern is really unique to indies! That’s great!

I live in a location with virtually zero stores that sell fabric or patterns, so I buy online only now. It has been years since I shopped in person. I am happy with the Something Delightful website. I find it user friendly. I only buy patterns when they are on sale. I don't get 99 cent prices, but on the other hand I do not have to go into the stores either, and I can barely walk, and shopping is almost impossible for me anyway. I also buy off the Simplicity website, much less often, but I do. I also buy a smattering of indie patterns. If I like a style I buy it. I also buy used and old off eBay & Etsy. I have amassed a very nice selection of patterns, and there will be virtually no garment or style I cannot sew. I am retired now and I am delighted to have all these options!

Thank you for writing, Lantanana. Having online options is a godsend for all of us, especially now that the local fabric stores (plural) are no more. I got comfortable very quickly buying online. (Some around here would say a little TOO comfortable.) I remember one time the Simplicity website ran a .99 sale for New Look patterns. I think I bought 20. I’ve never seen that sale since.

Thank you for delving further into this angle of sewing. My latest project had me griping about the lack of instruction or even good drawings that would give me a clue. I have loved Kwik Sew since the eighties, the rugged paper, the really instructional directions, and I worked around those shoulder pads! I liked them so much more than the big 4. Now i miss how much better even they were compared to today. I love the adventure of trying a new creation with adequate guidance. I tried out some patterns by Pauline Richards, "Saf-T-Pockets". Learned some new stuff from them.

I loved all the research you did. Thanks so much. It was fascinating!!! As for being able to get patterns and fabric in Canada at the wonderful sale prices you get in the U.S..........I hear you!!!! We used to have fabric mills in Ontario, but no more. Pattern prices are over the top!!! Larger size patterns seem to be made for square people and the selection of designs are for shapeless blobs!!! I've even considered designing my own line of clothes for plus size women!!! Even shopping at plus size stores, the designs are very limited and shapeless!!!! I've had to draft my own patterns, do mock ups in order to make sure the finished product will actually fit me......the shoulder widths are made for football padding........and I too have seen how all the patterns bought by the 'Big 4' are all the same. There's no creativity anymore.

The big 4 used to be different from each other with respect to sewing expertise. I was never able to sew a Vogue, so I stuck to Simplicity, with an occasional McCall's or Butterick. How I loved poring through the catalogs and the sensory experience of fabric shopping!

Oh yes, those magical catalogs! I used to comb through them (every so often my mom would buy one and bring it home) giving the models names, families and then outfitting their houses with shopping in the Sears catalog. Kids played differently back then!😂 Vogue always had that reputation for being difficult and my mom didn’t buy them. Thanks for writing, Trixie!

Here it is 15 months later and just now playing catchup with so many videos on UT. Your title alone caught my eye and found the whole discussion so interesting. Thank you for doing all the research and filling us in. My feelings are just plain disappointment with the Big Four!! No one considered the rich history, people in the's past and present, and no respect for any of it. I'm crushed!! The sellers only thought of the almighty bottom line and were willing to accept a discusting price of 14 million without any thought of what they had accomplished and their worker's and their hard work. Now they have created, but not reliazing it, no competition. And without competition, designs go stagnant. That is where the pattern co's are at this time, and I believe that'ss why Indie patterns are selling so well. There're giving us discounts, sales and listening to their consumers ! I really had no idea that all this had happened and I'm very grateful for your piece. That is why the Indie patterns are far above and superior to any of the Big 4. I had quite a few patterns in my cart from Something Delightful and was willing to pay the price, but the shipping was outrageous and after relizing it was coming from UK, I said" Why buy there'? and deleted them all. Thank you so much again and look forward to your video's. Kris Crocker

very intuitive video. I didn't know any of what you just told us about the history of pattern companies. I have always snubbed the inde patterns before. But, I think I might give them a go. You are so lucky to have your pattern sales over there, as here in the UK you have to pay £10.99 ($14.40 USA) for a Butterick pattern and £17.50 ($22.90 USA) for a Vogue pattern and sometimes even more. Patterns on ebay tend to sell for £5.50 ($7.20 USA) over the pond. Once again thank you for your excellent video. I'm obsessed.😃🪡

I buy the big 4 because they are cheaper than independent pattern companies. And, I will not buy a pdf pattern and then print off multiple pieces of paper. If one searches around, you can usually find cheap patterns at thrift stores; garage sales; or if you become a member of a pattern company. I also like the multiple size patterns in case you have to grade between sizes. I have found that vintage patterns are usually complete because the sewer saved the pattern for another time. I love the vintage patterns, as they usually have details that you don't see today. A vintage sewing pattern completed with today's fabrics are awesome!

Hi Kelly, thanks so much! I’m with you on downloading and taping together a PDF pattern, but so many people love them. I guess indies wouldn’t keep producing them if they weren’t a good business bet. Big 4 needs to listen to their customer base, and I think they have. I’ve noticed a removal of excessive ease in a lot of the newer patterns. That’s been a complaint for years - one that I don’t totally get, because it is so easy to measure the pattern pieces and know exactly how much ease will be present in the end result.

I use to make wedding dresses from patterns people brought to me and I nearly always had to purchase another identical pattern in the correct size. In the 90s the Big Four had fantastic wedding patterns especially Mcalls and Style in various styles. Tried to sell them/give the away many years ago no body was interesred. Well 2020 I saw a wedding pattern on Ebay UK which I had in a box of 80+ in the attic. I was shocked at the outrageous prices. Loaded them up onto Ebay, priced at current UK pattern cost, no bidding allowed. Sold out very quickly. The greatful messages received was wonderful. The dresses that sold the fastest either covered your shoulders or had thick straps. Strapless dreses have now become the norm with chiffon added as an after thought if you did not want to bare your shoulders. Very few wedding patterns available in the Big 4 and near zero in independent patterns.

Wow, what a terrific amount of well presented information! I have all kinds of patterns that I’ve gotten from eBay or Etsy and most of them are old. I bought one “current” dress pattern over the summer and was flummoxed when I unfolded it. There was a huge amount of ease, without much helpful instruction. I still haven’t used the pattern, because I’ll either have to trim a whole bunch of it off, or make it up and then custom alter it. Not what I want to spend time doing. I grabbed my older patterns instead and sewed all summer long! Thanks for your video and your reviews in sewing pattern reviews. I’ve made a few of the things you’ve modeled there and been very happy!

Thanks for writing, Janis! I always prefer to always work with finished measurements so there are no “ease” surprises. It bugs me when they give finished measurements that aren’t correct, but fortunately that’s been rare. I should remember to measure the pattern pieces every time, but that ain’t happening. So glad you had a wonderful summer of sewing the older patterns, yay!!

I really appreciate the work you've put in to investigating these companies. Very interesting! I always sewed the big 4 until the past approximately 5 years. I have mainly switched to the indie patterns. I like that they are pdf files that I save and can return to for a different size if I want to sew for another person. I've gotten so used to the paper I use to print them that the tissue paper is unappealing. I don't copy from the tissue patterns so when I used it I cut my size which rendered it useless for other sizes. Which is why I like the pdf file. I hate printing and taping the pdf patterns. I don't copy shop them as that adds additional cost to the already high price of the pdf. So I continue to print and tape. I plan to run to hobby lobby today for some Kwik Sew patterns. Great video!

You’ve found a system that works for you, and I say bravo! I chop up my patterns because I can get most of them for low sale prices. Some are rare (my old Kwik Sews) but I still chop them up. Gosh, what a riveting video, thank you so much! I had no idea that all the commercial patterns are now owned by the same company 😯 I sew both "big 4" and indie patterns, it depends what style I am looking for. I agree the big 4 have very scant instructions which have sometimes got me into quite a pickle... ☹ On the other hand, the indie patterns cost a fortune in the UK, particularly if you want them printed rather than spending hours taping A4 sheets together 🙄 Upwards of £14 is the norm, sometimes approaching £20! I nearly fell off my chair when you said you can get patterns in the US for 99 cents 😯 Here, anything under £10 is a bargain... But the instructions are very thorough with the indies. So I guess you pay your money and take your choice. Anyway, thank you so much for the time and effort that went into this deep dive into the history of commercial patterns, I loved it 🙏

Hi, Viv, this was so interesting and made me wonder where my vintage patterns are. I used to buy designer Vogue like Belleville Sassoon and make a lovely evening dress each year, which were quite complicated to make. Nowadays after a long break, I seem to struggle making tunic tops! I loved those trips to George Henry Lee (a fantastic department store in Liverpool, now gone but very much missed) to buy my pattern and fabric. The last Belleville Sassoon one I made still hangs in my wardrobe as I loved it so much (won’t go near me now, but I like wistfully looking at it 🤣!) I have one Style Arc pattern (which looks great on Joy) ready to cut out and the paper is lovely and sturdy, not like the flimsy tissue which reminds me of a thinner version of Izal toilet paper ( which my Gran had when I was a child ! ) I too love watching GB Sewing Bee, but would hate having to work against the clock! It has been moved to the main BBC channel prime time, which just shows a resurgent interest in sewing. Channels like yours have certainly helped a great deal too and the encouragement you provide is invaluable! Kind regards from Penny in Liverpool 🇬🇧😊💕

Oh Penny, I’m so glad you’ve kept your beautiful evening dress. It’s a work of art! Those Belleville Sassoon vintage patterns are so wondrous. I absolutely love looking at the old designer Vogue’s. I hear you on the struggle to make tunic tops - sometimes I cannot seem to will myself to sew even the simplest thing. But once I get to the table, I find the anticipation comes and I want to finish what I’ve started. I long to watch the GBSB!! I agree with you that sewing under such extraordinary time constraints would do me in, but the contestants rally with finesse and lovely creations. And if it sparks newfound interest in sewing for a wide swath of people, all to the good! Thank you for writing!😄

I recently returned to sewing after many years, I like to buy vintage patterns along with some modern ones all from the big four. I have also purchased some indie patterns what I find very frustrating about these are that they mainly come in pdf. Well let me tell you by the time you have printed the pattern stuck it together and then either traced or cut it out you have lost a full day, at least with the big four you can order on Amazon or go to the shops ( now they are open) have it delivered the next day cut out out and be sewing the garment. All patterns in the uk are really expensive especially the indie ones, but and it’s a big but they come with great instructions and sew together really well. I find the big four give very basic instructions ( thank god for you tube, it’s a must for returners , or beginners). By the way your channel is informative and inspirational I learnt so much from today’s video and went straight on eBay and purchased two Kiki sew pattern. Keep going Viv we need people like you.

Thank you Anne! And it’s true that indies have great instructions, for the most part. That is so key with new & returning sewers, as you say. I couldn’t believe how shoddy a “learn to sew for fun” McCalls pattern was that I made recently. Any beginner would be truly lost! That is inexcusable to me; they need to take the time to make the directions clear, or they’re losing future customers!

Enjoyed your "discourse" on patterns. Remember Ma Bell and how the US decided that she was a monopoly???!!!!! Well....hello.....big 4/bigger1 pattern companies. Loved hearing the history of Kwik Sew. My mom loved Simplicity patterns.....this was back in the 70's. She always said that they were more true to size than McCall's and Butterick. She didn't like Vogue much either. I have recently gone the indie route as I loved some of the styles! StyleArc patterns (from Australia) are wonderful....excellent style, creative and true to size. My first indie make thus far. Thank you for your video...love listening to someone who loves the world of home sewing!

Thank you! This was so interesting and I just loved the way you talked us through what you had learned ... and I love your passion for Kwik Sew patterns ... and your enthusiasm for all things sewing! I have sewn all my life, self taught and I have been pleased with a lot of what I have made ... but as you say the pandemic has given rise to more opportunities for folk to get involved in sewing ... for me it was the kick start I needed to begin learning from others - like yourself - how to do things PROPERLY!!! And to that end I have started following a number of sewists. I have extended my pattern stash with indie and the ‘big four’ patterns ... I love perusing them all ... but I am careful not to go mad especially as you say, here in the UK patterns are indeed quite pricey and I have to be sure that the style is going to suit my body shape and lifestyle - it’s a hard lesson to learn! Just one last thing though ... I am surprised sometimes when really competent sewists buy a newly released pattern when it looks to me sooooo like one they already have and I think ‘all you needed to do was ... and you would have that pattern!’ I don’t know maybe it is their way of supporting new designers ... but I always have to think ... another new pattern, plus the fabric - it’s going to mount up! Anyway, all very interesting. Keep doing what you do so well ... I love watching your vlogs!

I’m not crazy about printing and taping but I like the wide size range and all the pictures and videos from testers. I think kwik sew must have been in the years when I wasn’t sewing clothes. As a beginner sewist in 🇨🇦 I go the resourceful route, cheap/free pattern downloads, fabric from clearance bins and charity shops. I’ve learned to resize patterns. Now that I’ve made a few garments I’m buying big 4 patterns, styles I normally wear. Concentrating on building core wardrobe. In this country it’s very difficult to get many patterns at reasonable prices. Our local deadstock fabric retailers offer great discounts.

This was very interesting! I just discovered your channel and have binge watched most of your videos! Kwik Sew 3766 is my go to knit top pattern. Recently at Walmart, I saw the EXACT pattern with the same pictures and drawings but with the name McCall at the top. I didn't think to see if the number was the same. I wonder if they will do this with other Kwik Sew patterns. Thanks for the great videos. My non-sewing sister loves to watch them with me!

Hi Viv! Enjoyed the video! Interesting information. I use “ Big Four” patterns and Indie patterns. I don’t really care for the direction the Big Four is going. I hope we don’t loose any of them. They both have their advantages & disadvantages. I learned to sew using traditional methods and sometimes I scringe at the sewing techniques used in Indie patterns. Some Indie patterns are well drafted & others not so much. As of late, I’m some finding Big Four patterns aren’t so well drafted either. One advantage of Indie pattens for me is I can download them immediately. But the price of paper & ink adds to the cost. I live in a rural area and am 30 miles from Hobby Lobby and 50 miles from JoAnns. Back in the day, WalMart was a good place to buy Simplicity & McCalls patterns & even fabric, but of course not now. I do like seeing all the tester photos provided by the Indie patterns. I find the pics useful because I’m am not as slim as I used to be & I can get a better idea how the garment will look I’m me. I love the Kwik Sew patterns too! Would love to see & hear more about your collection. (I have that golf out fit pattern.) I hope there is room for both the Big Four & Indie patterns in our sewing future.

Thank you for all the research. Being a creature of habit I prefer the big four. However, nice to have lots of options (for now.)

That's alot of information! Good for you on doing the research! I didn't notice the simply delightful until 2 months ago or so! I thought it was another company or something like etsy! I don't really like the website it's confusing and I can't believe how much the patterns are on the website!😳 I sew both big 4 and Indie. I agree Indie is easier to understand! And YES they fit the plus size woman sooo much better!!😍 I still like basics that the big 4 offer and YES love the wardrobe packages😍 I always forget the people out of the country don't get our sales. I hope they don't get upset at my pattern hauls?😳 great video!❤

Hi April, thanks for writing! I can’t stand that dopey website. They’ve kept the Simplicity website separate, and it’s a lulu all its own. Sigh. I think it’s wonderful and important that indies are catering well to the plus size crowd. Big 4 has dropped the ball on that entire demographic, and it may be a little too late to pick it up again.

Thank you for an interesting discussion . I am in the UK and fabric and patterns appear to be way more expensive than in the US. I am not very keen on many indi patterns, although there are a few that I like. I have recently come across a French company with a few I love because they have interesting shapes and not all straight or rounded. I have always been a mainly vogue pattern person although I do use other big 4 patterns and used to love Burda patterns. I cannot ever remember using a kwik sew pattern but I may have done years ago. I used to do a lot of dress making, then moved over to quilts and I have come back to clothes with the occasional quilt slipped in. But now I have to spend a day tracing and adjusting the pattern to fit which I never did before. But I am also changing patterns too.

Thanks for your input, Karen! Did you sew Burda patterns before they included seam allowances? For some reason I think it would be difficult to add seam allowances, but people do so all the time. I feel like I’d forget to at points on the pattern and have a disaster on my hands. So nice you’ve found a French indie pattern company that you poveZ

@@vivmomsews4962 I cannot really remember. I sewed a lovely velvet dress with a shaped and lined bodice which I really loved. This year, I took a skirt pattern from one of their magazines. It was gored, so I just increased each panel width by an inch to fit me and attached it to a princess seamed bodice.

When I was sewing for my myself and daughter's I loved the big 4. When I came back to sewing again I found Indy patterns were my favorite. They are cute, very stylish and easy to sew. As it happens the big 4 I usually end up with are Simplicity for my granddaughter. For me its Indy with full bust pieces. I feel like I know what I'm going to end up with and will love it. Before McCalls was my favorite sizing was true and fit was good. Back then I felt like Simplicity was huge and Butter sick ran small. Now I love the vintage patterns and counter books, wish I had all those patterns from long ago. By the way I love your videos.

Lots of great information. Patterns are timeless because the fashions are reissues over time that are made with current fabric and small tweaks.

I used to sew a lot of Kwik Sew patterns. Have a whole box full of them. A bit older than yours and a catalog from that time that I love. I also have several of Kerstin Martensons books. They are wonderful. But this was new information for me. I did not know. Greetings from another pattern nerd in Sweden

Hello Nina! Keep enjoying those Kwik Sew treasures. I don’t know what it is about this brand but I am such a fan. They start to become expensive on eBay, though, and definitely on Etsy. Oh well, I think I have enough to last the next 80 years or so...🤪

Interesting topic. I am just getting to where I can make a decent pair of pants, shorts & tops. I just couldn’t get the hang of correct fit with store patterns . I am vacationing in Florida and actually carried my sewing machine with me and just finished a pair of shorts today. My goal when I return home is to learn how to use my sloper with store patterns. Also to try my hand at color blocking. Hopefully I can find some nice simple patterns and cheap to practice on. Right now though just going to enjoy vacation and hopefully getting another pair of pants and a top sewn.
