My issue with Kingdom Hearts' story is honestly mostly presentational; namely, that Nomura kept using the secret endings to imply that Kingdom Hearts was actually this huge, complicated meta narrative that was conceived long ago and would be slowly unveiled over time. You know, as opposed to what it actually was, which was a bunch of stuff he made up as he went along and a bunch of ideas he crammed in because he happened to be thinking of them the day the script was due. Like, it's abundantly clear to me _now_ that all the theorizing people are doing is pointless because the next Kingdom Hearts story has probably changed fifty times since the last one was released and will probably change fifty more before somebody pulls Nomura away from the keyboard, but that's not how it was sold to me back _then._ I was a child, I bought into the hype. Now that I'm older and know better, I can more readily roll with the wacky punches, but I'm still a little annoyed that he's _still_ trying to pull this con.

My biggest point of interest with KH story was the characters and the emotional moments. I couldn't care less about the linking pieces of the overrall narrative if the emotional core is strong. That's why I like games like BBS in spite of its narrative and gameplay problems. The point is that, to me, KH3 failed hard on that regard. Characters lack agency, the heroes are all satellites to Sora, long awaited reunions are just brushed off to follow the rushed ending, Kairi's nothingness both as a character and a heroine, etc. The game sometimes felt like it just wanted to end things quickly and proceed to the next Arc of the series, throwing out years of anticipation and foreshadowing

Sora does some cool as shit near the end of the game and was only expanded upon in the Final Mix version where they let you play out some of them too (Roxas fight.) The end of Kingdom Hearts 3 was cool to play but reflecting on it there isnt much action happening in cutscenes which, for kingdom hearts, is kinda underwhelming.

The entire story is poorly translated to appeal to younger audiences and simplify it like by using the word darkness instead of anger, hate, etc. Friendship is in-place of bonds too as all keyblade wielders get's power from bonds and by helping the worlds they travel too, they are awarded by the world's heart with a new keychain which has the worlds power infused whiten transforming the keybalde. There are A LOT of foreshadowing but very not obvious and kh3 presents xehenort as Lucifer as the fallen angel with a lot of references being a goat is most obvious one. (sora has angel wings but only 1 and needs support of other to fly like kairi) Ayaya read more if you wanna but it's random facts. The first kingdom hearts at end of 1 is the heart of the muti-verse, the one in 3 is the creator of the world, people and other hearts, the one in 2 is a fake one as it's just a big heart made via heartless. Nobody's are hinted in 1 and directly stated even more with the remix, keybladewar was mentioned in KH 1. Marluxia's sister is present in COM in gba too but more obvious in playstaion version etc. Time-travel is hinted at in 1 with sora falling in the opening of kh1, nomura changes things a lot because there are many problems with game making and hardware issues but never changes the stuff foreshadowed, hell the secret ending he said was just made for "fun" in kh1 clearly say's nobodies are a thing and is remade in 358/2days FFS.

Thank you for bringing up the controversy surrounding newcomers reviewing the game! I specifically remember this occurring with Angry Joe when he expressed a desire to review KH3. Fans and very prominent members of the community were quick to jump down his throat and gate keep him so hard that he ended up dropping all ambition of reviewing the game and calling the fan base elitist(which I can understand given the response he got). The newcomer perspective was an incredibly valid and necessary one for any established franchise. Arguably more so than usual with KH3 considering the noticeably increased marketing push the game was receiving, 13 years of hype following the end of KH2 (I know it wasn't in development that long but for god's sake, the end of KH2 showed that the story was not over), and the fact that it was the first Kingdom Hearts to release on an Xbox. There were going to be a lot of people jumping into the series for the first time with KH3 and they really needed reviews from their perspective. And the game did recognize that they needed to account for newcomers, that's why Square put the memory archive in. And to think that a professional reviewer would trash a game beyond belief because they were lost by starting at the culminating chapter is a bit of a leap to make. Not to say it wasn't done, but plenty of them would have recognized that they would have understood more if they played earlier games and probably have recommended that newcomers start with the collections. The fact is we shouldn't be gatekeeping potential fans in this way. It makes the Kingdom Hearts community feel unwelcoming and judgmental of people who wanted to test the waters with KH3 and see what it was about. And another thing, the story was only one facet of the game. You don't need a single piece of prior knowledge to have very valid opinions about things like the flow of gameplay, level design, or graphical/musical quality (just to name a few).
@zeosummers3984

yeah but it also wouldn't add much so i understand why they didn't want him to review it. he at most could just say he enjoyed playing it and might want to play the other games. he can't really add anything because its not a completely stand alone game. problems begins- majority of kh games are just bad. the music are redition of past games. (can't really review story). it looks nice is kinda meh ( not much to say on that). for newcomers you can only recommend the combat which i did to someone i know and they enjoyed it. i can't do that for people who want closure that isn't just an end of the saga. My biggest problem with KH3 in this regard is that it doesn't really have a satisfying story on its own. Every KH game, despite the zany plotpoints, managed to introduce or flesh out characters in a satisfying self contained narrative that made some sense. KH2 had that with the Nobodies, BBS with its main trio and even DDD with Rikus journey of self acceptance. KH3 has many cutscenes with characters talking to each other, but little is explored or fleshed out. Only Sora feels like a character, and even then he doesn't have much personal relationships with the main antagonist and I feel his whole journey of self sacrifice is told very clumsily. I can't fault newcomers when the game fails to deliver a satisfying self contained narrative.

I completely agree, I think the story should have focused on character building as by KH3 it really seems as if Nomura doesn't know what to do with anyone, by the end everyone is useless except Sora despite losing almost all his powers at the start, Aqua cannot hold her own, Riku who seemed the most developed is with nothing but the weird dialogue with Replica Riku. I would argue that KH3's Disney worlds do help build some of the more background theming of the game, you can watch that one foreshadowing and callback pair of videos for more context, but there definitely is more discrepancy between the more original worlds like Toy Box and Monsters Inc and stuff like Arendelle and Corona which are more traditional retellings. Arendelle definitely suffers the most storywise as a result, any KH fan would tell you that. At least Corona has the inherent fun of helping a someone experience their own world for the first time and Pirates just kinda lets you go on your own little adventure mid-way through. KH is a series that wears it heart on its sleeve, so to speak, with some level of corporate appeasement for some of its properties, so the way it writes and develops plot can leave some scratching their heads or turning up their noses, but I'd argue it does have genuinely good writing. its not a 'turn your brain off' affair, there is a fun, engaging, and even clever story here, it might not be perfect, its no Jane Austin, but it's not trying to be.

I think that this video focuses FAR too much on limited perception. I don't know what KBash's social circle looks like, but it seems almost universally consistent of people who play Kingdom Hearts "despite" it's story or those who think it's, at best, "fun". I think that is an unfair, but more so, INACCURATE take on these games' fans. Many Kingdom Hearts fans are genuinely moved by these games, and while the writing is not excellent, it can be effective at eliciting an emotional response from the viewer. This video seems to categorize those fans into the extremist "theorists" group, but that's simply untrue. There can certainly be some overlap, don't get me wrong. But a lot of people who play this series aren't constantly rolling their eyes or dismissing the plot as "fun/serviceable", just as they aren't super-theorists for genuinely liking these games' plot. This video gives off the impression of the latter, so I think it's really inaccurate in terms of addressing fan response. Whoever KBash was looking towards, it seems that they're more willing to wallow in the negative than is normal for the wider audience.

This has some accuracy. Me personally I understand those people who genuinely love it, and am very weirded out by them. Cause with the early games, the games up till Days... It's just *bliss*. The first Kingdom Hearts is kind of flawless story-telling wise to me. And the first times with the other games except for DDD, I did *feel* a lot at least. I kinda loved a fair amount of it, it's more with time and separation that I start to pick them apart more, aside from very obvious problems *like* Frozen, or *like* Kairi not getting to at least put up a fight before being bamfed. Like Birth By Sleep, from pretty much all sides, used to be loved a lot more by me and other fans, it was more over time that the conversation changed and picked out the problems more. I don't think KBash though, btw, was entirely trying to paint the overall fanbase as just "having fun" with the games. It's more like you have to roll with them, critical of them or not, loving it or not. I don't think either that he meant every big fan of the games was a theorist. Though I dislike the disses toward the speedrunners. Those guys get so much shade and are so misunderstood by the community, it's gross, so I'm not a fan of KBash kinda writing them off too. Another thing, is I get the impression that he thinks a lot of more critical fans are kinda trying to be a bit pompous about the series? Maybe just a bit. Well generally the wider audience will receive it a little better as they have stuck with the series thus long but generally I think the writing quality of KH3 especially the end falls off and they use character moments to evoke an emotional response and whilst the seas salt trio(despite problems with the build up to the scene). Yet the scene where Sora talks to Vanitas just shows poor nuance and frankly poor writing. Vanitas a being literally born from the darkness is asked by Sora why darkness? What does that mean, I know Sora is stupid when it comes to most things but he cannot even understand his perspective and constantly berates Xemnas until his death yet he completely forgives and buys into Xehanort's reasons for what he has done and Eraqus forgives him. Even the latter on it's own is barely acceptable. The characters themselves have not had enough meaningful conversation and dialgue apart from "forging the x-blade to develop any relation apart from plot. KH has put all it's chips on plot despite it having little character development outside of Riku and a few others who Nomura decided to pick on. Despite becoming a master Riku has never looked weaker in any game. He cannot beat a demon tower, Aqua completely trounces him. He is only in the story for exposition. The use of characters demonstrated that Nomura had little clue what to do with most of them.

To me kingdom hearts is like a daytime drama , a novella or something, from the outside its easy to dismiss it but for fans you get invested in the characters emotion so much that some of its big moments legit bring tears to my eyes, I know the score does a huge chunk of the work because I hear that piano from the start menu and I get tearyy eyed. its powerful because its focus is entirely there, ont he emotion of the thing. For me the game coulda ended when aqua and ventus and terra all got back together. I loved that portion of 3 so much and while yes I wish kairi wasnt done dirty saving aqua and ventus was such a high point for me it still got me crying. a game I was ultimately disappointed in still made me finish it. The same way that two made me cry when sora starts crying when he has to leave Roxas' friends. it really uses the power of trios to its advantage and thats what keeps people hooked. all that hackney writting that plots out the situations they end up in is entirely ok to me, because as long as it draws out that level of emotional pay off ima be into it. helps that its ina series that constantly moves forward mechanically. 2 might just be the best action rpg Ive ever played, I beat it over and over and over again and each time I cried at the same parts.

kh's story is very typical shonen. I'd say it can be finished with kh2 since most plot lines are wrapped up there, and the main characters goal which was to find his friends and get back to the island had been achieved, Riku's fight against the darkness and accepting who he was was also achieved. There was no want or need to become a "master" because to us; Riku and Sora were masters in their own right given how they handled the oh so powerful Xemnas. "but what about maleficent and pete?" what about them? the story doesn't even know what to do with them post this game all the way after kh3 and they are practically team rocket. characters actually stay dead and there's no awful "time travel" being tact on an already convoluted story. Nomura simply saw inception and went "we can make a kh game off of this." As much as I enjoyed how broken the characters of birth by sleep were, the follow up to them in kh3 felt lackluster and rushed. did their story needed to be told? Perhaps. But it was just revenge of the sith but with keyblades. I don't like the concept of the "ice cream trio", but Roxas is my favorite character and him returning with more confidence in his voice as if he finally grew up was probably my favorite part in kh3. I'd accept him as a spirit who enjoys his time with Namine though as well. why don't I like the ice cream trio? because axel became more annoying later down the line and I despise Xion because 1. She's a Mary sue and 2. we've had enough sora clones. 3. Xion exists only to make poor Roxas's life more miserable than it already is. but w/e, it is what it is, I've grown to accept it and moved on. this series is almost 20 years old, no use in harping over it lol.

That's the problem I have with everyone who claims it has "meaning." What meaning it has is completely stolen from another genre and medium all together that is predominently sold to the same demographic. What does this mean? It means it is copy and pasted because it works. It is not unique, it is a dime a dozen. You can get the exact same "meaning" from better written stories elsewhere. Because of this, it is not a valid defense.

This is so true, I got into the series when I was like 13, so it was way easier to just dive into it, but I understand how hard it could be for newcomers. It's such a sweet and fun gaming franchise but the story and various systems you have to play them on are definitely reasons to put someone off the series. It's like a commitment, and you just have to have faith that you'll like it or you'll get it later on. And I get how that's just not viable for lots of people. So yeah, KH is such a unique franchise. It's good, but unnecessarily convoluted and hard to get into, shame.

I unironically LOVE the series (yes, even the spinoffs and weirdo entries) because of the story. I know fully that the game won't meet my ultimate expectations when it does resolve, but as one of those "theory crafters" who will "die on their hill of defending the franchise", the unanswered questions and open ends are what I love the most! I love digging in the lore, rewatching every single cutscene for the 1-line clues that reveal the whole mess, etc. because having those "aHA!" moments is just so gratifying in a series with such convolution. The games eventually explain what's going on in unambiguous terms, always, but they just have more to reveal, you know? The inclusion of the mobile game sucks, but I just know they'll re-release it for a console later on, take out the "gatcha" elements and just make it a normal game eventually so that it's accessible for everybody.

A few weeks before KH3 came out, I decided not to get it and just watch the cutscenes because I felt like nomura didn't know what he was doing from what I saw in the last few trailers. Rules set up were being broken, statements made by the man were just not true, and playing or getting involved with the chi series didn't matter in terms of KH3 for the most part. I was upset after seeing the last bits of the game and was annoyed that all Re:mind did was be an advertisement for the next saga rather than tie lose ends for 3. Like you said, nomura just keeps going regardless and fans just need to let it go. But I felt like 8 years of my life at to that point was wasted on the series. Yeah, I did want to hear your opinion on the story, but I was so happy that you were having fun ith it Kbash. This video did bring me back to reality though. As a fan of Kingdom Hearts since late 2010, I've been worried about the series since 2013 when the chi series started. Thank you for basically saying "but why though?" Lol The game play is still great, Characters are still cool, and Disney as well as FF now has just been a cash grab. I grew up with this game and have played all of them but tbh I started losing interest after DDD and kh3 was a disappointment for me too. I know the story shouldn’t be taken so serious but I feel like if they were going for such a crazy storywith a lot of crazy ideas the least they could’ve done was make the characters better but instead I feel like In kh3 almost everyone was done dirty not to mention I felt like certain characters shouldn’t have showed up at all like Roxas and xion or like half of the organization members. Idk if I’m making sense I probably sound stupid but characters just feel like they’re there to move the plot and in kh3 it just felt like people wanted to see their favorite characters in kh3 for the grand finale. Sora was basically doing all the heavy lifting like wasn’t he supposed to be at his weakest? I mean Pete was literally laughing at him, I also don’t like how they don’t explain how sora can change his keyblade forms he starts whipping out these massive weapons but he kindas just does it with no explanation as to how he learned it. I also don’t like when he’s the one to save aqua when I felt like riku should’ve been the one to do it and maybe we could’ve had a moment where riku is reminded about his old self when he was consumed by darkness and how he overcame it and could’ve helped aqua do the same. I know the remind DLC shows all the guardians of lights working together and kicking ass and you get to play as kairi but I felt like all of that should’ve been in the base game, I felt like overall if the game was longer or if they didn’t waste time and did the Disney stories bing retold they could’ve tied everything nicely and think of a good way to keep the series going. Wether the series gets better at writing in later games it’s still way too late for that, sometimes I feel they don’t know what else to do and I honestly felt like everything should’ve just ended in Kh3. But-hey those are just some of my opinions but overall it’s still my favorite video game series I still love it a lot.

The ongoing debates on who was more useless: Donald or Goofy while someone in the back *scrEaMS* "KAIRI!!!" like they'd bet their life on it. I love this series. I love that Sora is _'floaty'_ . I love the colors and sense of overwhelming positivity that can't fade even in the most serious of moments in the series. You knew you would save your friends, because *THAT'S* what kind of game this IS! It doesn't need the hanging questions or the sense of real dread. This isn't The Last Of Us and it shouldn't be. It's a game about a kid fighting and playing with Disney Characters and Final Fantasy heartthrobs. You literally play Honey balloon popping games with Whinnie the Pooh and then fight with a reality shattering clone of an old (at the time) random Keyblade Master. as not only a longtime fan since 2002, but also as a fan who literally has bought every game on their original consoles and devices and has built up a tolerance to A LOT of this series' writing choices, I definitely agree with a lot of what you said. it's just an action game where your anime-sona bops around Disney worlds, and the plot mostly exists to give your characters a reason to bop around Disney worlds. it doesn't need to be an epic masterpiece in storytelling, it just needs to be a good game series. personally, i think the fact that KH is so preoccupied with even telling an interconnected story, even across different consoles, is what makes it unique from other game franchises. they really didn't have to put all of that effort into it, most game franchises don't even bother with trying to have an internal cannon because video games usually aren't trying to tell compelling stories. i think it's cool that they at least try to say something with these games.

to truly understand everything takes a lot of commitment and dedication honestly. Going through each game initially and having your first perspective of what's happening only to read all of the secret files and have a greater understanding of background elements or further insight on things you may have been uninformed in as a player. Though something happens when you go back to retread what you alright thought you had an complete experience of and realize there are hints of future events that span years across releases in games. Things you'd dismiss and probably never think of assuming it was a throw away line and realizing much later that maybe these characters had a greater understanding of the situation than you expected and that moment changes your view on potentially the entire game. The cost up until the ps4 collection however was having to endure with only fractions of information until you could play and possibly rebeat games you hadn't touched yet to add to the structure of understanding you've created. Learning the depth of all these characters, understanding the importance of plot points or specific games in the series and in the end looking for purpose or meaning in their outcomes is what I think people really want. People want to learn secrets behind under represented characters hoping they're more than they seem, they wanna see growth and motivation, to know that this web of a plot line was subtly linking each hint across the many games. It's a fuckin mess and you need to be a shizo to put in the time and resources to truly understand every little detail even fully aware many things are pointless just for that tiny piece of meaningful input that answers even your smallest question or concern. Either way, I like it, i've had a good time

The lives destroyed, the pain endured by so many attached to the main character even on the enemy side because even in kh2 the majority of them were manipulated. We can relate to the basic things like the sorrow of loss but we can't rationalize the means taken to end. @@roopereimi1718 This is why i go back to you need to be commited and dedicated to really understand the motivations like what would push terranort to kill and psychologically torture people which you need information from in dark road and bbs. what's the true driving factor behind vanitas' intentions which you need background knowledge in the books. Xemnas, ansem and YX are all different characters with different motivations and different struggles. They came from one person but all had their own personalities. Death in kh is typically not too severe because of the many rules to set up ways to come back but there are circumstances where when a piece of you detaches and becomes something all their own only for them to be forced back into an original person shows true annihilation. SoD and master xehanort had different goals but both of their deaths meant different things for the people who were involved and them themselves. The main story of kh is very easy to follow and understand, it's up to the person experiencing it to choose whether they wanna dive in and try to understands characters they may like. Ya like marluxia? Ok here's all this info on how he changed over the years, his relationships, why other characters treat him a specific way, why sora had specific reactions to things he experiences because of him and maybe even his nature in wanting to betray the organization. You didn't really need to know any of that and none of it changed the outcome of what happened to him but because you were interested you were rewarded with something deep and rich. Of course not all characters are treated the same and there's still a lot of speculation of two others in specific. MGS is similarly convoluted with games being locked to things people probably dont own anymore but people defend that and it's dumb time paradoxes or even the time travel in survive. I kinda compare it to dark souls which barely has a story but people will read literally any item to link any two names or locations to get a better understanding to the geography when it does nothing to impact the story. If people can put in the time to read a rock description then iunno, maybe you can read the 13 secret reports that literally explain everything you could ever wonder in each game.

I've followed KH since the beginning, even after everything I still believe KH1 is the right way to do KH. The Disney worlds actually reacted and changed due to the crossover shenanigans happening around them. Remember in Deep Jungle where we kill Sabor and Clayton? Kerchek remains alive and helps us get to the Keyhole. Or how about in Agrabah where Jasmine is a Princess of Heart and gets kidnapped? Jafar has magic without wishing for it, most likely because Maleficent taught him when she made her Legion of Doom. Not only do the wishes that get made are changed, but Aladdin wants to go with us to save Jasmine. That should've happened, but I guess we can't have fun in our Disney crossover game. Then we get to Atlantica, where ARIEL helps us kill armies of darkness and FUCKING URSULA!!!! The entire plot of Little Mermaid is changed to fit the crossover shenanigans, but then in KH2 it's just a recreation of the movie, even though Ursula is supposed to be dead and Ariel has no reason to trust her because she remembers the 1st game. She even wanted to go with us to see other worlds, imagine if that was allowed, but no we get denied. I hope the cartoon Disney has planned is a remake of the series and sticks with the KH1 style of Disney worlds and plot. I want Disney characters teaming up with the protagonist to save the universe, is that too much to ask?

So I can actually jump in here and say that your desire to see Disney characters fight alongside KH OCs is a dream that won't happen buuut it's mostly Disney's fault. I remember reading an interview with the SE workers, who said they at one point WANTED all the Disney heroes join forces with Sora and storm Hollow Bastion together. But Disney said no to that idea, they didn't want that level of cross-over. They are VERY protective of their IP and those kind of cross-overs are dangers to them, who knows how their characters can be perceived when they mix it up! So they told SE to scale back, and that kind of scale is not allowed to this day. They must keep the Disney stuff more or less isolated to their own worlds, and that's how it's gonna stay, I'm afraid.

@@goranisacson2502 That's ironic considering all the Disney crossover games on mobile like Sorcerer's Arena and Mirrorverse. Both games have Disney characters teaming up to fight each other or a main threat. Mirrorverse is a great example since it has bad end universe versions of Disney characters, Belle becomes a sorceress and uses the Beast's rose as part of her staff. It's literally edgy Disney, but they have no problem with that. But when it comes to Kingdom Hearts there's a problem? Disney executives are stupid.

@@heartless2147 I forgot to mention it in my previous comment, but I meant to say that the "Disney heroes join you" was the initially planned end for KH1. And while they did, for instance, not allow SquareEnix to do anything but follow the pre-existing plot for Frozen (because it's such a big and valuable IP for them that no deviance from the structure is allowed), Disney letting them do a pseudo-sequel to Big Hero 6 and play around with the Pixar worlds, is because they've gradually opened up to SE and given them some measure of faith. (Also the creative teams at Pixar for those films were way more willing to work directly with SE than the Frozen team was). So see, I get the Mirrorverse argument, but it is worth keeping in mind that back during KH1's release Disney were hella skeptical too. KH success is what has made them a bit more willing to explore cross-over stuff, so it is why Mirrorverse exists in the first place. But they're still going to be very picky about letting a project that isn't totally controlled by them, like Mirrorverse, do as they please with their precious characters.

Great essay! For me the game that handled the Disney realms the best was the first one simply because they treated the incursion of parasitic forces from another dimension as a catastrophe. Like where the plots of Aladdin and the Little Mermaid were actually derailed, in Mermaid's case before the actual movie plot could even begin. But the second and third games chicken out of causing serious ripples. Like Ursula being the antagonist of Atlantica in KH2 despite being very dead at the end of the last game.

Hmmmm. For me, i think kingdom hearts has a major dialogue problem. Generally the plot beats are well abd good, and your segment about suprises or asspulls definitely doesnt hit as hard for me because, well, anime designs have tempered me for that. I see sora and expect a bit. But that doesnt excuse a lot of wasted time explaining and reexplaining simple beats. People say kh is convoluted but not because its actually complex, but because its explained poorly. Prime example: "Me? Im already half xehanort" "Simple explanation: the bad guy is so untrustworthy and heartless hes gonna possess a new organization to make 13 of himself. Cause who else can he trust?" Now your goal, as a writer, is to examine and expound upon this premise. Sora has to trust and rely on riku to save him. They already talk about each other. Maybe riku should explain to characters he doesnt know if hes trustworthy still. Hey! Its ansem! Prime idea. Maybe sora trusts tron so much the other characters think hes crazy. And then sora gets in trouble and tron breaks his mind control to save him. Hell, the three musketeers movie is about a ragtag team that needs to trust each other. Oh look, mickey mouse in fantasia Doesnt riku have a good relationship with him? Shouldnt he really want to save him? The villians meabwhile should egg them on into being selfish. Maybe giving them outs. Time travel can be explained away as being dangerous and convoluted. But who better to trust than myself? Specifically young xehanort, whos the new mysterious villian. And it all comes to a head...when they have to trust axel to help rescue. And so on. Instead, literal hours of cutscenes are wasted on exposition, and literal disney plot recreation, instead of semi literal, like the little mermaid from kh1(which ironically became literal in 2) and to me, you could keep these cutscenes the same visually, but swap them out for a more focused, tightly written script. So for me, while i still love kh and dont hate the story, thematically speaking its a huge stinking bag of lost potential

Kingdom Hearts isn't supposed to make sense. It's a metaphor for life. I love the crazy plot. I want it to go even further. I want all the craziest most convoluted plot lines imaginable, because it's all part of what I call the Kingdom Hearts effect; when you get lost in the plot sauce, and you find that thread, and you realize all the intersecting plot rules and lore are just building blocks in a metaphorical construct for inexplicable, abstract emotional issues. KH3 doesn't get enough credit for its story. It's not so much a story that delves into trauma and existentialism like 2 did, nor the simple hero's journey of the first... it's more directly questioning the "my friends are my power" theme. Ever since he got out of his coma at the start of KH2, Sora had been gradually becoming more haphazard and naive in his behavior. Suddenly he had to face a dire situation, and only once he had lost everything did he finally realize the need to be more serious. The Org members showing up had been slowly corrupting him with the idea: the time he wasted bonding with his friends didn't grant him any control over his power, and the concept of using friendship as a power is simply naive. KH3 does well at poking all the weak points the original game's thematic concept might have, as well as showing exactly how it can work the way Sora believes... after the plot does a back flip to allow a do-over for the sake of contrast. Contrived plot, yes, but effective story-telling. Very good thematic closer. Some people see a weak, annoying, and childish KH3 Sora, but I see a kid who spent the game smiling through the pain of self-doubt, learning how valuable it is to be that person who extends a hand to the helpless. In KH2, Sora helped Beast, Herc, Simba... all characters who went through facing their responsibilities woefully unprepared... and he helped Riku, who in KH3 returned the favor in Sora's darkest hour. KH3 Sora is learning his own worth, and yet the price he pays to understand is being separated from everyone who valued that in him. The crazy plot elements just do the insane work of making this weird intangible emotional problem into something we can beat with a key shaped rod and conquer via good old fashioned video game button mashing. There's an emotional journey taking place in these games, and I think it's freaking brilliant.

The Choices they made, the ideas that they allowed to flow from EVERY GODDAMN GAME in the Series to Fit into this one! It was...I don't know what it is! Its too Up its Own Ass to have a reasonable word to describe it! Its a Tangled Web of Simple yet Perplexing ideas that don't Cather to the Sensibilities of Storytellers. I Felt those moments in KH1, KH2, BBS, Fucking Watching Shit go down in 358/2 Days! Stories about Characters who's Free Will, Selflessness, Hopes, Dreams, all getting Dashed away. And not knowing if they'll ever be remembered. But Fuck that logic, 3DS, Just Connect the Dots all the Way back to When you Met them so they Can return! Use the Replicant Bodies to Give these People a chance to Return! I mean...What's DEATH at this point!? KH3 both gave me moments, yet gave me Nothing but Sheer Disappointment, I could see it, I could see it in just about every trailer that came out. I knew some Dumb shit was going to make it all possible, but its more than clear that we also wen't going to get what was promised to us Either! I like that Axel/Lea got to dunk on the 4th wall a couple of times! But Goddammit, Xigbar being the 6th Mysterious Apprentice was just Goddamn much! And I couldn't keep on going knowing that the Stupid plot of the Mobile/MMO games were making their Plot apart of the KH series, along with Literal Time Travel, which Sora used in the DLC. I don't care about it any of it! I don't even care about the final Clash with Xehanort. Or what Pete and Maleficent are up to, cause it was over the moment we Won. I've never played kingdom hearts. The series looks nice and I've meant to get around to playing it. I'd honestly say I fall somewhere between the cynic and the person that is fine with writing for writings sake. I enjoy a fair amount of stuff despite it being stupid because it was able to suspend my disbelief and keep me invested. I tend to be more harsh on movies and games from big publishers but it's because I expect good quality content from the huge budgets. Because of this a lot of my favorite games are either made by independent studios or indie games, in terms of literature I have read some of the "high class" books but still get just as much enjoyment reading a well written fanfic. In fact one of my favorite things I've read period was a 1 million word long fanfiction and it's 2 million word long side story. Like as much as I fucking hate the business practices of disney, I've watched my buddies play kingdom hearts and it looks fun. I've heard the soundtrack played by a live orchestra and it sent chills down my spine. I'm not gonna let petty real life problems prevent me from enjoying a work of art. As for gatekeeping, I come from the souls community and league of legends community. People commonly have a sunk cost fallacy problem where not only do they feel like that have to keep playing no matter what, but they also feel as though anyone who hasn't invested what they have is somehow inferior. Elitism is common in nearly every field of interest and it will never stop being a complete farce. What people often don't realize is by getting into a series on a later entry it will make them go back and play previous entries. After playing halo 3 as a kid a got the previous games, after playing fallout 3 and new vegas I bought the originals, and after playing doom 2016 I went back and played the originals plus a bunch of mods. We should always celebrate more people getting into what we love, I may hate fallout 4 because it doesn't play like a fallout game but I am happy people got into it because it means some will go back and play my favorite game: new vegas.

After that I went back and played KH1, and I've been with the series ever since. I've gotten my brother into the series too, and I like how he described it: the games don't really care about telling a story that makes sense, it's more about the emotions it makes you feel. I honestly don't know if I'm a Kingdom Hearts fan or not. It sounds weird but let me explain. I played/watched (lol) all the games in the PS4 collections and I got really into explaining the plot to my friends as a shitty "haha this is so dumb but I know all the lore" kinda thing. I was like the lore keeper but just in order to just make fun of it with friends. On some level I really enjoyed the games, but did so knowing that most of my friends thought I was playing it purely out of irony. So I was in a weird spot when KH3 dropped. I had experienced all of Kingdom Hearts for the first time in the year leading up to release. So when I finally got to KH3, I had taken a little break despite enjoying Dream Drop a lot. I was pretty burnt out after synthesizing 13 stories and relearning how each game changed all the mechanics over and over (not a bad thing, it's just tiring to readjust to new ideas every few weeks). When I finally got around to KH3, the ending made me irrationally angry. It was so drawn out and I just wished they had sprinkled the plot into the rest of the game instead of having ALL the plot in the 20 hour ending. So I ended up selling the games out of spite and I was "done" with the franchise. Two years later, though, I kinda wanna replay some (NOT ALL) of them. Anyways, this is all to say that I am a shitter. I do think KH is mostly dumb and earnest fans of it are cringey. But I do kind of like it a lot. Sora's actually kind of a personal hero to me in the same way Stephen Universe is. Their power is the ability to empathize with others and make friends (literally in Sora's case). I know that it's not really applicable to real life in a lot of situations, but I think the world would be a much better place if more people were like Sora (see I'm cringing as I type this). What am I?! Am I a fan?? Am I a hater?? A nobody? WTF?! Someone help me. The more I elucidate this, the more it's a personal crisis. Anyway, breakdown over, probably. This series has broken me in some small way.

The video has "story" in the title but that's like barely actually discussed. Kingdom hearts has fundamental problems with story so of course it's this giant clusterfuck. As someone who loves comics and the MCU, you can have your corporate fan fiction cake and eat it too. But Kingdom Hearts and many of it's diehard fans don't know what "Story" is, they just know "plot". I've only played KH1 and 2 btw not that which ones ones I've played matter too much. KH 1 had an almost passable story, Sora's coming of age, he starts out the story one way, and the events of the story change him, and he was the focus of the story. Roxas had a story in the beginning of KH2, and that's about where the story in KH stops. Beyond that they just throw plot after plot at the player. What is Sora's story in KH2 and beyond? Fuck if I know, he's just either repeating the KH1 coming of age arc or just a guy who wins fights or gets tricked by obvious bad guys. How do they keep this "interesting"? by throwing plot twist after plot twist at the player, introduce new villains, heart emotion being types, or characters with hoods, and also Disney references. This is why KH is "convoluted". Roxas' story is also "convoluted" with digital reality simulations, mysterious characters with confusing names, and whatever the fuck a "nobody" is supposed to mean, but it matters way less because we can identify with what he's going through in KH2, and most of those plot elements are in the background of Roxas' story. First and foremost we understand Roxas' woes about suburbia, friendship, identity, and the future. The plot is supposed to be there to support the story, not the other way around, but later even in KH2 that starts to reverse. Both KH1 and 2 aren't even close to perfect, but I think that's why there's a massive drop off afterwards. Once the "story" is gone, all we're left with are characters that don't act like people. They either say exactly what they're feeling or dump exposition about events you don't have any context to care about. And if anyone reading this disagrees with me and think there is actual character growth and story, then the plot probably got in the way of all that and people who are used to good story telling didn't notice it under all of the darkness. What KH does right is fun visuals, action, iconography, and invoking nostalgia (and I don't mean that in a way to dismiss, it's a legit strength of the franchise). But these things for a very merry story do not make. Kingdom Hearts was not simple or clean. Makes for some fun dumb discussion when I'm too lazy to get out of bed though :)

Yeah people complain about the prologue a lot but without that addition, the fact that Nobodies can feel and the sad fact that Roxas' life will be supplanted by Sora's life make it moving. I think fans have become attached to things that did not make the story of Kingdom Hearts interesting like how many bodies Xehanort cannot usurp. This series made me love RPGs as a kid but I think Nomura when let off a lease without a good writer backing him up makes up absurd concepts and plot that brings down the game, a little like Kojima. This game does not ground itself in it's characters which is evident as Sora does every major thing or is involved in some way and everyone else is useless. The writing is not only criticised because it is "convoluted" but because when it comes to the characters apart from tragedy barring Riku and Roxas and maybe until CoM Sora before he became all-important every character lacks depth.

This is exactly the problem. Plot has overtaken story (and thanks to UX that seems to be how newer fans prefer it). KH used to be about characters. That’s because the previous writers understood how to write characters *as* characters. KH3, in my opinion, really emphasizes this stylistic difference. There are two scenes that always come to my mind which highlight the difference between KH2’s writing and KH3’s. At the end of KH2, Xemnas finally confronts Ansem the Wise, his former master whom he betrayed. Xemnas accuses Ansem of being jealous of his superior talent, because “unlike [Xemnas], [Ansem has] a heart, and [is] powerless to control it.” Their discussion addresses the fundamental question of KH2: “What is a heart?” We learn early on that Nobodies are creatures who do not have hearts, and the question of what that actually means echoes throughout the story. Yen Sid erroneously informs Sora that the Nobodies are monsters because of their lack of hearts, and Sora exhibits this prejudice and ignorance throughout the story when dealing with the Organization. DiZ also shares this belief, and dehumanizes the Nobodies to the extent that he is willing to manipulate and kill Roxas just for a chance to get personal revenge. But in the end, both their hearts inspire them to change. Sora learns to feel empathy for the Nobodies, and Ansem feels regret for his actions and tries to make amends (“my heart is telling me what I must do!”). After so many people trying to understand what a heart is, the conversation with Xemnas provides the answer: “we may profess to know the secrets of the heart, but its essence is beyond our reach.” It’s a callback to what Ansem (Xehanort) says in KH1: “One who knows nothing can understand nothing.” In KH3, we have a similar scene. Ansem, Xehanort’s Heartless, confronts Ansem the Wise again. This time, the dialogue is: “Where is.............THE GIRL?” There is little substance, just foreshadowing for a new plot device. And so much of the dialogue in the game is like this-characters talking about “things.” There’s much more to storytelling than questions and answers. I believe Nomura is aware of this. But he just couldn’t find a way to tie it all together in a cohesive narrative. It’s a shame, because I think the pieces are there for something excellent. Writing is hard work, and how much time could he really dedicate to writing and editing KH3’s script when he was spending most of his time and energy on FF7R...

Now I have more questions and I'm wondering if it will take another 15 years to answers those questions. I won't lie, I gave up on KH3 after Dream Drop Distance was announced because it felt like it they didn't have a game planned or they were just milking the franchise instead of just moving along. Enjoyed this video a lot, good job! The story of the KH series, as of this moment, is a story of artistic vision, passion and love ruined by cynical business practices. Kingdom Hearts’ magic ultimately comes from its sincerity. It’s a totally absurd premise which takes itself, its drama and its characters seriously, and that’s why players have become so immersed and emotionally invested in the series over the past 17 years. KH3 is a demarcation point for the series. I like to call it Nomura’s Mark of Mastery Exam, because it was his chance to show players what KH actually means to him. Prior to this, we’d only recently had the handheld titles, which-while fun-were held back in scope by technological limitations. Birth by Sleep had a strong story, but how much stronger might it have been if it had been a PS2 game as originally intended? DDD was mainly just a celebration of the series 10th anniversary, so story was really a secondary priority for that game. In both of these games, players were able to overlook certain story flaws and shortcomings because they were just “side games,” even if they connected directly to the main series’ plot. Now, to quote DDD: “This leads to KH3.” Underlying all the handheld games post-KH2 was the knowledge that there would be a KH3 someday, a game which would properly continue Sora’s journey as a character and return to the magical, big adventure which has always been the series’ namesake. KH3 is one of the main reasons fans supported all the handhelds, buying entire consoles to show SquareEnix there was demand for the series, to encourage the company to actually make the game fans truly wanted. Square-Enix was very aware of fans’ dedication to the Kingdom Hearts story, and realized they could turn KH3’s release into a big event. They even added a new secret ending teaser for KH3’s story in the rereleased KH2.8. It undeniable that Square was marketing KH3 around its story. Surely they would put most of their effort towards delivering a grand story finale for the Dark Seeker Saga.... But when the time finally came, one of the most anticipated moments in gaming history, Square-Enix decided to treat KH3 as a total afterthought so they could focus their efforts on FFVIIR, going so far as to make Nomura the director of FFVIIR. Additionally, they imposed a ridiculous engine switch on KH3’s console-inexperienced dev team, and we know from Nomura’s interviews that they delayed approving his resource requests for KH3. So after all this time, after all this financial support from fans (KH has not been an inexpensive series to follow), after waiting 13 years for Square-Enix to acknowledge the series is worth investing big money in...this is how the company says thank you. After knowing how important this game, story and characters are to KH fans-and exploiting them for extra cash (to give to FF7R lol)-they deliver a game that doesn’t even have one single full-size original story world. To be fair to Nomura, writing is challenging to begin with. Writing a complete script with multiple interconnected story threads in between grueling days at the office directing FFVIIR (with the added stress of knowing that the company’s future all but hinged on the success of that game) would be overwhelming for any artist. But as writer and director, he has to take responsibility for the work he delivered. After 13 years of teasing KH3, this was his chance to finally make it, to give fans a true payoff for their investment-financially and emotionally. I do not believe he did. It is heartbreaking, because prior to KH3 I regarded Kingdom Hearts’ story very highly. It reminds me of both Classic Disney and Classic FF. But if the creator and company do not care about giving this series, story and characters the treatment and respect they deserve, why should the fans?

@@roxas1802 Thanks, that means a lot! I know I’m just screaming into the void, but it’s honestly out of respect and admiration for the series, devs and Nomura.

Although I wasn't a fan of the 3rd game or some of the spin offs, I have always enjoyed the story to the game. Yes at times it can be cheesy but its the fact that I've grown up with kingdom hearts. I still remember when kh1 first came out playing it on with ps2 with my brother. As we grew so did the character with every new arc. We grow together.

Hmm I still think Xehanort takes the cake. Barring dark road or whatever new reason Nomura created to justify his actions, Xehanort from the onset destroyed people's lives for an experiment.

@@diondwamena6667 you do realize Xehanort only killed one person that was Eraqus the rest was only his heartless Ansem and his Nobody Xemnas by context Xehanort did even less than them, in fact, Xehanort barely did anything at all!The Kingdom hearts event in union cross has explained the power of kingdom hearts re-sets all worlds but everybody will be alive still this is explained in KH Dark Road so Xehanort is a pretty harmless Villain if you align the facts.

@@1BadAssArchAngelvs14 He had no need to make Ventus an empty husk and honestly taking over someone else's body by force are villainous actions regardless of whether he thought it was for the greater good or not. His actions led to the suffering of Ventus, Terra and Aqua. I don't know how you can justify that.
