I can see how one could traumatize a baby, but not how to do the second part of that process. I'm with Merphy about liking it when an author writes troubling characters without projecting morality blatantly onto it. There's something powerful in being able to come to your own conclusion that certain characters/behaviors are problematic. Especially when it helps you realize your own blindspots and biases. 50:10 I disagree. I think the fact that the reader is unlikely to notice Wayne's problematic behavior, until someone points it out, is a great thing. It adds to the realism, because in real life, people also don't always notice problematic behaviors when they're stuck viewing them through their own lens. I really like that type of writing, where readers can really get different opinions on the same thing, depending on what angle they're approaching it from. As for the concern about normalizing it for readers who maybe just read the books, and don't participate in the discussions... I agree it definitely can happen, but it's also off-set by the fact that people who DO get it pointed out to them, will make the experience that sometimes, you need to take a step back and re-analyze behavior from a less biased perspective.

(With teaching the reader to step back and form their own opinions, even if they’re contrary to anything the characters say.) Side note: I personally didn’t notice his obsessiveness toward Ranette and general misogyny at first glance, but I at no point had the impression that he and Steris were in any way having friendly banter. My impression from the get-go was that his treatment of her was emotionally draining to poor, bullied Steris. The thing about him harassing the girl whose father he killed was pointed out to me before I even read the book, so I unfortunately never got to find out if I would have picked up on it on my own.

I loved those little nods to the first trilogy and how those elements played into Scadrial's evolution through time.

I think that Secret History should absolutely be read after Bands for two reasons. First, the reveal of Kelsier is the best in Bands. It's such a big twist that I dont think that Secret History or Rhythm of War would capture quite as well, thus I think it being revealed in Bands is most effective. Second, it has a lot of cosmere implications and Realm shenanigans that reading it after Hero of Ages, especially if you start with Mistborn, is just throwing you into the deep end before you've learned how to swim.
@animalobsessed1
3 жыл бұрын
So don’t start with Mistborn as your first Cosmere series. Simple. And even more important. Don’t just read books 1-7 all in one go! Read some Stormlight/Warbreaker/Elantris before you read Era 2. The tone change between the eras makes people feel unnecessarily disappointed/harsh toward Era 2 when they don’t give it time to simmer. Era 2 is way better when you wait for the Era 1 feels to cool down first. I got so frustrated with the Survivor hints/references in Allow/Shadows (I don’t remember which of those two it was), that I stopped reading halfway and read Secret History before finishing the Era 2 book. My only regret is not reading Secret History sooner. I kept having to dig up the WoA and HoA scenes to compare Kelsier’s POV with that of the other characters. Would have been much easier if I’d still had Era 1 fresh in my mind.

Coming late with a comment, but listening through, at the end, I was struck by the way in which both Steris and Marasi handle stress. It is more than likely familial culture and upbringing, but both have to control the moment by going through all the little details beforehand. For Marasi, it’s a fallback on her studies and statistics. For Steris, it’s a fallback on her lists, which are essentially statistics/probabilities when done in the manner she compiles lists. There seems to be a deep reliance on perfectionism/getting-everything-right that both sisters share, which is just an interesting connection to fleshing out those characters and highlighting their sisterhood.

I know I’m a year late, but I just wanted to say how much Wayne reminds me of Holden Caulfield. I think that scene in the beginning of BoM really highlights it in a Tales of Ba Sing Se kind of way. I completely agree with Rosemary about how selfish Wayne is for retraumatizing Allriandre. He could send the money or leave it with someone else. That's my issue with him. He doesn't care about boundaries that women set. He sexually harassed Ranette for ten years (somehow avoiding being killed by her during that time) and he continuously forces Allriandre to endure his presence, using money that he knows she needs to control her. His viciousness toward Steris actually made me dislike Wax a bit since he shouldn't have tolerated an ounce of that. I don't mind characters being deeply flawed. My issue is that he isn't punished by the narrative. For example, Tyrion Lannister is a pretty terrible person and causes a lot of his own problems, and it comes back to haunt him several times within the story. Wayne is never punished. He just continues on like Jar Jar Binks.
@rosemarywilliams5183
3 жыл бұрын
So, I think...it's more self-centeredness than outright selfishness. There's a pretty fine line between those two things, though. I just think it's remarkable how good Wayne can be at getting into the personalities of his roles, yet so terrible at understanding the effect he has on people. Like, I'm pretty sure if someone pointed out (and then drove the point through is thick Bloodmaker skull) what he was doing to the poor girl, he'd be upset and would reconsider how he does things. But I don't think it's ever even crossed his mind, and nobody will call him out on it. Wax has more then enough information to do this, but Wax is very, very bad at calling out Wayne on his behavior, as your point re: Steris shows. And Wayne doesn't leave Ranette alone until Marasi applies a metaphorical boot to his head. Honestly, of all of them, Marasi has done the best job of taking Wayne to task, but it's still not nearly enough.
@Florfilm

I don’t think Wayne does this consciously. He is deeply traumatized and by avoiding to face his pain he inflicts pain on others. That’s such a human thing to do, I think we all do it to a degree. I can empathize with that very much that’s why I think he is an awesome character. Would I like him as a friend, no. I have be hurt very badly by people like him. But that doesn’t make me like him less but more. Not as a good human being but as a great character.

I think people are reading our current cultural mores into Wayne’s character, when they want others to call him out on/punish him for his problematic behavior. That’s a huge thing we do now, but not that long ago in our own culture would he have been called out? Remember him and Wayne comes from the roughs, where it’s rough, no polite society or proper behavior. So for Wax, Wayne is just being Wayne, he doesn’t see the harm done. But Marasi, who is from the more civilized society does call Wayne on his crap. We need to be careful when reading to remember that these characters don’t exist in our current time and culture so we shouldn’t expect people to react to them the way we would. And that lack of reaction doesn’t mean Brandon thinks Wayne’s behavior is ok. Really enjoyed the talk! I just hear things like this with Wayne and in other books but I don’t think it’s a totally fair reading of those characters and cultures

Just found you guys today, and I got to say, I loved this episode. One thing, I think you all missed a big turning point in the story, and a subtle but important moment in Steris' character development. At the end of book two, when Wax was absolutely destroyed and broken, Steris was the person who understood him and what he needed, a strong, silent, caring person to remove their own needs from the equation and give him room to grieve. Steris was the only one to see this and do something about it, and she helped him to begin to put himself back together. Wayne and Marasi were incapable of this because of their own personalities, and the way they personally saw/needed Wax. It was at that moment, to me, where Wax and Steris truly began to fall in love, because that was when Wax truly saw her for the first time as a real, and whole person on her own, and that is when he decided to try to make a real effort to make their relationship more than just an arrangement. Just my opinion, but please let me know what you think.

Hard agree about how Steris and Wax’s relationship began to change at the end of SoS. The fact that she sees herself as socially awkward but then is able to just know what Wax needed the most, better than anyone else, was great. It really felt like that was her taking that step forward into offering a full relationship instead of just a contractual one. And I very much think you’re right that this was the point where Wax’s view of Steris also changed and he started opening up simply by accepting what she was offering and using her as a shoulder to lean on while he grieved. I love them together so much and think if we had had the time we would have talked about Steris in particular for /so long/. I was and am REALLY disappointed in the Wax and Harmony conversation, because Harmony basically does a bait-and-switch where he gets Wax to acknowledge that he would have preferred to kill her himself without really addressing why she needed to die the first time around and how Harmony has become exactly the type of deity that plays with people's lives and agency that Lessie accuses him of being. Wax is basically pushed into tacitly agreeing with Harmony's methods and conclusions without ever really having dug into it. Wax and Lessie both rails against Harmony for having been made his pawns, and while Lessie was subjugated more obviously and brutally, Wax on his end is basically just tricked into agreeing to be his good little pawn henceforth.
@rosemarywilliams5183
3 жыл бұрын
To be fair, I think the book was seeded with enough information there to make the answer to that relatively easy to put together. Kandra who have lost one or both of their spikes cannot be restored without getting their *original* spikes back. Lessie/Paalm had been without hers for a WHILE, and nobody knew where they were. There is a high probability that the entity influencing her had them deliberately hidden, if not removed from Scadrial entirely. The chances of finding them and restoring her were slim to none.
@Ialolime
3 жыл бұрын
@@rosemarywilliams5183 Ironically, you seem to be falling for Harmony's bait-and-switch too. Yes, Lessie needed to die. And Wax would have preferred to be the one to do this. But that is hylerfocusing on the last one or two steps and ignoring the hundreds, if not thousands, of steps it took to get there. Why was Wax forced to / tricked into killing Lessie the first time around. Harmony is accused of using people as pawns for his own goals, and no matter how good those goals are, that is *exactly* what he is doing. Lessie is right about Harmony. And Lessie is right about Elendel. She was also unstable and a wild card that had to be "removed". But that doesn't change the fact that she was *right*! And that she became unstable in the first place *by being used and abused by Harmony*. And Harmony's crimes are never really addressed or even acknowledged.
@rosemarywilliams5183
3 жыл бұрын
@@Ialolime The fandom as a whole has been trying to pin down exactly what happened the first time around, and the details are still sketchy. We have a WoB indicating that Lessie's first "death" was not part of Harmony's original plan for Wax, as well as one that says Bloody Tan wasn't under his influence, but that he wasn't completely guiltless, either. At the end of the day, I do side-eye Saze quite a bit for that event, but I also acknowledge that I still don't know exactly what happened there. How much of that was Harmony? Was Trell already involved and using Tan to exploit a weakness and try and recruit Paalm? Brandon has been very cagey about answering questions like this, which makes me suspect those questions will be answered in The Lost Metal.
@Ialolime
3 жыл бұрын
@@rosemarywilliams5183 I am not aware of any WoBs indicating that what happened wasn't Harmony's plan, but that is irrelevant IMO. The problem was and remains that Harmony has a plan that he is not communicating. Fair enough, some things needs to remain secret or whatever, but he is using people as pawns without ever communicating anything ever. Fair enough it he'd been like "hey, I need a handful of agents to trust me and do what I require", but Wax was only ever tricked into doing Harmony's bidding without his consent. And thats the problem. Doesn't matter if things didn't go as Harmony planned or not. The problem was and is that Harmony eas actively manipulating and using Wax without his knowledge and consent.

Wayne can be fun, when he isn't being problematic. But he spends a lot of time being problematic. Still, my favorite quote from Era 2 comes from him when he says, with regard to language, "ain't nobody what knows the cow better than the butcher"

Wax and Wayne together are so good, Wax by himself is a bit bland, Wayne by himself is awesome.

Wayne was such a horrible person that it genuinely surprised me when the only time Wax ever really called him out for his behaviour was at the end of BoM, where he's like "Wayne, enough". Really? Lmfao, that was crazy to me. I don't mind shitty people being protagonists or anything, especially considering how traumatized he clearly is, but I at least expected *Marasi* to put Wayne in his place. Maybe Steris would explode at him. Maybe he'd have at least ONE fight with Wax. Maybe SOMEONEEEE would call him out. But nah. I hope he gets shit on appropriately in the upcoming book. That being said, Wayne is still my favourite character of Era 2, second only to Steris tbh. I just wish his actions had more realistic consequences. There's absolutely *no* reason for anyone to tolerate him to the extent they do, especially not Steris or Marasi. It feels like it takes away from their characterization to let him be himself, even if it's for comedic effect. But ah well.

I've always disliked Wayne--enjoy him as a different, dynamic character, but very much dislike him as a person. Giving his perspective of the scenes didn't stop me from seeing the harassment in his actions, and yeah, it's it's sooo unacceptable. But maybe Jessie is right that his POV causes people not to see that, because there are so many people that love him, probably to a fault. I think he's an interesting characterization experiment, but just...eww imo

There are some BIG One Piece fans amongst the Shardcasters, this would be hilarious 😂unfortunately we don’t really branch outside of Brandon on this channel but who knows, maybe in the future! - Jessie

Loved the conversation! Though, I did get a little annoyed each time Rosemary had to throw in her “counterpoint” or disagree with someone’s opinion. It just seems to derail the conversation since it happened several times and didn’t add a ton of value.

I admit, I am rather deeply obsessed with Era 2, which makes me a bit more, um...shall we say "enthusiastic" with my opinions here? (As opposed to just about anything else.) I also have somewhat less practice Shardcasting than most. Thank you for the feedback!

They speak about Wayne as if he isn't a fictional character, and that he should be cancelled. 🙄 Just read the book, discuss the book but speaking about characters in a cancelling tone, its super weird. "Brandon doesn't highlight Waynes behaviour as inappropriate and therefore gives the impression that Waynes behaviour is acceptable". Politely, shush. 😅

Uh, I think the statement you quoted is a completely reasonable position for someone to have and be uncomfortable with? No one is calling for Wayne to be "canceled" but instead Jess just wants Wayne's BS called out more in the text. That doesn't really seem extreme or "canceling" him. That's fine if that's not important to you, but I think that's an incredibly reasonable thing to dislike. I'm not exactly going to tell a woman who has an issue with Wayne's behavior that their discomfort is irrational or unjustified. What did you expect, that the casters should ignore when characters do things that are bad? There's several pretty clear examples of characters in Stormlight doing some very bad things, and we absolutely would discuss them on the show, and it's completely reasonable if a reader says, "wow, I cannot forgive that character" for some things they did. We're discussing the book via discussing the characters. In general, I think most people should cool it on using the word "canceling." Like, come on, really. -Eric

I also can’t wait for it to be over, because then I’ll have the last book, which I’m looking forward to so much because era 2 is absolutely awesome. So we have at least one thing in common.
