My African Grey also does the outside bird noises. She joined in on the crow sounds. It's still dark right now and still, from the other room, while I'm watching this on my phone in bed, she joined in on the crow sounds. I would love to know a way to discourage certain sounds. She yells, "Stop iiiit!!" and it drives me insaaaaane. There's nothing like hearing "Stop iiit!!" at full volume, in your own voice, at first light, while you're still asleep, to start your day in a miserable way. I regret yelling that at the dogs one day, but that's proof that they can hear something once and immitate it perfectly. Smokey is lovely. I do hope you have uber-high security and don't just rely on living in a nice area and that nothing will happen. About twenty-five or so years ago a couple had their eight parrots stolen from a backyard aviary. It was horrific because they treated their birds just like you treat Smokey - those birds were family members.

My girl does that, crows are fascinating to her, maybe because they have high intelligence like parrots. Mine does the exact same whistles and beeps. She also does the car alarm. Maybe those frequencies are near to their native sounds. The meowing cat sound is cute.

My timneh talks back to Smokey and responded to a couple of her whistles. My timneh and I whistle random tunes back and forth to each other. So he was excited to the short random whistle Smokey did and whistled back to her. He did his annoyed whistle when she didn't whistle back to him. My timney, James (full name James Band 007 because his breeder's band number was 007), does 2 laughs. One is when he thinks something is funny. The other is an evil laugh (heh heh heh) that he uses when he knows he is being ornery. James is 25 years old. I have had him since he was 10 weeks old.

My African grey was so intrigued by the sound Smokey was making. The sounds he was familiar with, he responded to. So cool! The other day my parrot was talking to a hawk in the backyard. It sounded like there were several hawks in the yard. As I went outside to see who was making the noise, the hawk flew right over our screened in porch where our bird, Paddy was. Paddy dove toward the house thinking the hawk was coming to get him. He doesn't talk to the hawk as much😂

It's been nearly twenty-five years since I've cared for birds, but one thing I remember distinctly: if there is anyone or anything in your/your parrot's life that makes him uncomfortable, that will put a damper on his speaking behaviors. Please don't take this as an attack on yourself, I have no idea what your situation is, it's just the factor I experienced and remember. In my case it was unruly children who refused to learn respect. Away from the children, at the vet, the Umbrella Cockatoo in my care became more voluble.

So about everything in her life has changed. She’s being treated with a heart medication 2x/day & a med for pain/inflammation. She doesn’t talk very much at all now. I’m really hurting worried about her future & how long she can live this way. Thank you for any info you can give me.

I like her house sparrow, black phoebe, and red shouldered hawk. Some of her crow calls are specifically hawk-scolding as well as food finding sounds. At one point in the video she actually responds to a crow with a contact call. She even does several crows calling at once.

Funny I was thinking of commenting that Harlan just sat and listened intently to Smokey during the entire video. Harlan makes some of the same sounds. Interestingly though I have seen her do this on other videos of grey parrots regardless of the sounds or the language. It's as though there's something in those vocalizations they can hear that we can't. They know it's another grey parrot.
