This is great! I have been a practicing buddhist for 30 years. Buddhism doesn't really care if someone is straight or gay or whatever - only that you are using your sexual energy in a positive and respectful way so that it doesn't bring pain and suffering to yourself or to others. Come out. Get tested. Be kind. Be honest. Be patient. Be loving. It's all very simple when we think about it...

I loved this interview. It gave me a bit more insight into Buddhism in Japan and how some might treat homosexual people or LGBTQ+. I've always thought that it's custom to accept anyone as a monk/Buddhist. I'm glad Kodo is being treated well while being himself! Another great/insightful video for me to watch in the Libary at University ✨

Where as being religious and thus which religion you believe in, is I believe, what a lifestyle choice is and not homosexuality.

@joa8593

There is a self, it's just a mental construct. It doesn't exist independently or in any concrete way, but in regular life we still expediently refer to this mass of thoughts and physical body as ourselves to avoid every conversation become a sermon. He's a Shinshu monk though: they are basically a pure faith-based sect, not a philosophical sect like Zen or Therevada that are popular in the West so it's not as important that he split those hairs.

Buddhism is the only 'religion' that I've found that is either neutral or positive regarding Gays. So I'm very sympathetic. I remember quite a few of the writings about Buddhism and try to incorporate them into my thoughts as well. How successfully is a question - but something has stuck I think :) I loved this video you guys!! He was fascinating!! I thought liquor was a no-no within Buddhism, but whatever. I've heard the stories that male prostitutes used to service the Monks back in the old days. No reason to think it still doesn't happen today! He was a very refreshing interview! You guys are awesome at finding the right people to talk to that are relevant to so many of us! I know there are some sects within Buddhism that are far less Buddhist than one would expect, but overall Buddhism is far more welcoming, far less judging, and far less hostile than any other religion I can think of. Being Gay, the best religion for a gay person in my experience is Atheism. I consider myself an atheist because I will not subscribe to the judging, the hate and the encouraged violence of Christianity, or Islam or others. You guys hit on a real winner with this one!!! Thanks!

Thank you so much for uploading this! I'm queer and I'm also a Unitarian, so I know a lot of people who incorporate Buddhist meditation and practise in their faith. As a result, I've been interested in Buddhism, but I'm still not sure about it. I remember finding a book at my local library about queerness and Buddhism, and right away it was talking about not allowing yourself to feel hurt or angry when being subjected to homophobic abuse, because if you are, then YOU'RE actually the judgemental bigot in the situation; essentially "I'm feeling negative about this person's homophobia, therefore we're the same." I understand Buddhism being about not judging others, but that was such an upsetting way to begin the book that I couldn't read any more of it. I appreciate hearing more about queerness and buddhism from a different perspective to that!

So I studied Buddhism, and there are a lot of forms of it that are dispersed around the world. The original practice encouraged letting go of bodily attachments and ergo exiting the circle of karma, so in Nishimura's case, his sect is a lot more lax, and the focus shifts more towards being understanding and accepting of the world, how it exists.
@sunnyv7745
Жыл бұрын
Yes your right, Buddhism has many versions or forms especially between different countries such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Japan etc. From what I have understood Japan's Buddhism is a very relaxed and less strict version that allows the monks to marry due to their beliefs. But it's also due to the fact that Japan's Buddhist population is very less than it was before WW2 so by marrying the monks can continue to keep the religion and teachings.

This was very informative and educational. Especially for us westerners who have never really had a good grasp on what Buddhism actually entails. A gay Buddhist monk did not surprise me though. It would almost take all the fingers on four hands to count the number of gay Buddhist and ex Buddhist monks I have known. Most of them were not as openly "out" as Kodo Nishimura is though. Good for him for being another sorely needed positive gay role model for young gay men.

I think it's interesting he identified population and disease control as reasons for religions controlling sex. I think it has much more to do with the fact that when you control someone's basic physical functions, it makes it much easier to control them in other ways. If you can tell someone when they're allowed to sleep, eat, or have sex, they're more willing to let you tell them what they should be thinking and feeling.

Yes, i am buying that book because i am always looking for ways of using religion and philosophies of the world to support and uplift my fellow LGBTQ+ and live in unity with the world around us. Also, i have a question somewhat unrelated since Valentine's Day just happened. It is my understanding that in Japan Girls give their boyfriends and crushes chocolate. Then on White Day the guys reciprocate. How would that work for us? Do the bottoms give the tops chocolates then on white day the tops do the reciprocation? It is just a morbid curiousity on how we may still celebrate that with everyone else. Thus living in unity with everyone.
@sunnyv7745

I guess that's one way you could do it or it doesn't necessary need to be done in a way similar to straight couples. If one of you gives the chocolate first then the other gets one in return.

People seem to misunderstand but it must be said. The Buddhism practiced in Japan is closer to that practiced in China. But both are quite different from Orthodox Buddhism, which is the type of Buddhism practiced in South and Southeast Asia, where the religion had originally come from. Monks who practice orthodox Buddhism abstain from alcohol and are celibate, and most definitely can’t go to parties. Both orthodox Buddhism and East Asian Buddhism don’t discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation, or on the basis of anything. Just so everyone reading this would know not to assume that all Buddhist monks can drink and party.
