You're doing incredible work for the history of the sport getting guys like Capes on the show. Very good point about athletes' entanglement in the organizations. Even if nothing happens, the results will always be tainted. WSM especially has some cleaning up to do. To be fair, you have to be careful not to get too entangled with WUS, too, Loz, if you want to stay a neutral observer.

Geoff Capes was been a very good strongman I mean! But I have to make a critic: A good sportsman never reduce the performance of another competitor in that way Capes did when he talkes about Sigmarsson. I never could see another personality like him in fourty years of strongman. Never ever Sigmarsson talks bad about another competitor. He was always a helpfull friendly and optimistic person. A real sportsman and true viking at all!!! 👍🤔

And thank you Geoff for being a hero growing up and giving me plenty of smiles throughout this. Even at 70 he doesn’t mince his words! 😂 and how right he is about all the distractions today to the purist sport he competed in. Despite there being some major talents in strongman, I think people can see through it sometimes and recognise that ‘all things being equal’ who was born strong and who had to get strong..I count you both in the former category. Just a shame about the bloody injuries. All things happen for a reason however and at least you’re fit and healthy today and providing the only watchable strongman channel out there. All the best 👍🏻

Loz, this was a great interview (as usual) and I know you like to listen and take the more passive role in the interview (which is great), but in this one case, I wish you had come in with a set of specific questions to ask Geoff (you did it once around the 54/55 minute mark and then tried to again at the one hour and 3/4 minutes mark). Would have loved to have heard what his favourite event was? What he thought about Bill Kazmaier not being allowed to compete at the Worlds from 1983 until his return in 1988? How he felt he compared to the guys he competed against in the 1980's? I'm 42 and an old school fan (I jumped on board in the early 90's). There was a lot that I would have loved to have heard from Geoff and I think he needed you to steer/direct him in specific areas. I know you were being extremely respectful of him, but it just came across like you were weary of interrupting him and when there was a pause, you didn't fill it with a question and when you tried to say something, you spoke very quietly and he didn't hear you. Just an observation mate. I am grateful for these amazing interviews and do love what you do.

Banning straps in deadlift events would be fine by me, if for no other reason than because that's how I like to train. A lot of the setup is arbitrary so I don't want to complain about straps too much (I mean, belts are pretty much universal and I probably get a little bit out of mine) but it is like pulling from a short block. Plus I like the feel of the bar in my hands and usually the knurling is a big part of what separates a good bar from the rest.

I agree with Mr. Capes on the "knowing the events before the contest" kind of ruins the whole mystique of strongman. Whereas it is good to have standardization and proper measures, it seems a better test of overall strength to not know the events pre-contest.

Loved it Lol. He’s a hero. Miss the old days. Re the future of strength: If you look at the history of strongman from Victorian / Edwardian era, there’s a sudden downturn in the sport at WW1 and the proceeding economic depression, where pugilistic sports took over and physical strength levels and even the size of athletes changed a lot. Hopefully that doesn’t happen again. Long live strength

I'm american so no it isn't a nationalism thing either. In truth, I don't think nationalism should mean a damn thing in the sport of strongman. Great to see Geoff on. Met him a couple of times... once waaay back in the late 80s, he opened a new changing room at my primary school, and also late 90s when I worked at the local cinema. I did look up that fight and it is indeed on here. Won't spoil who won. Also, I do kind of agree, in many ways the older styles of events with odd implements and 'things' being lifted and moved, and with events being a surprise to athletes - at least as a fan - is much better. Though at the same time, I do feel there's definitely room for the more regulated events being included, like the deadlift, squat, dumbell overhead etc... - but they shouldn't have to always be on a regulated bar and plates. No reason an even can't have an axle with a big rock at each end lifted for reps. The Wheel of Pain' at Arnold's is a great example; no one knew what it was, and it was - still is - such a pure test, near impossible to train specifically for too. I think it says a lot that Martins won that the same year of wining Worlds (If I'm remembering correctly).
