In any case the bad thing for 343 is beeing the new activision and microsoft the new universal interactive studios, smashing the group in charge to make this saga like... em... something "superior" from the old saga, so if there's someone to blame, there is 343 studios and microsoft could avoid those problems directly. Like activision when everyone guessed was their fault and the real problem was universal for the poor crash bandicoot saga of ps2. It's interesting to hear Martin O'Donnell's take on the Arbiter sections of Halo 2 as I've never thought about that until now. He's right that you're playing as another character with thoughts and motivations, rather than a character who is on the same page with similar thoughts to the player. So it's kinda interesting to now see Halo 2 as a representation of the two different visions of gaming: the traditional game protagonist, who the player thinks alongside and projects themselves onto, and the modern game protagonist, who is their own character that the player controls and follows in their journey. Very good interview.
@zoeadkins9095
4 жыл бұрын
Had a similar thought, actually. I've always found the difference between Master Chief and the Arbiter to be an interesting subject. Marty and you are spot on in saying that Chief is a vessel while Arby is his own character. To me, playing as the Arbiter leaves the player in the same role as when they're playing Chief; we are still an observer and the Arbiter is our guide through the Covenant side of the story. We may not relate to his goals, philosophy, or actions (at least initially) but it is the insight he provides and the dynamic development of his character that make his sections work so well anyway.

He's absolutely right when he says that pre rendered cinematic are distracting. I loved the cinematic from the original trilogy because the fidelity, the character models and the textures all matched the actual gameplay. Having the gameplay and cutscenes match perfectly made the game all the more immersive.
@BalkanGames
4 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The new cutscenes are nothing short of stunning in terms of visual fidelity (and only ever so slightly worse in terms of direction, art style and pacing in my opinion), but it's almost as if they put so much effort into making them that the remastered in-game graphics look unfinished/underwhelming by comparison.
@peanuts974

the importance of the flow and pacing of the game and the player's immersion in the game world is something that often gets lost in the pursuit of prettier graphics and higher polygon counts. really happy that marty is preaching it here.

BalkanGames I do get this criticism, but H2As pre rendered cutscenes add more emotion and small details to the scenes and the narrative , making it far more watchable and enjoyable than the cutscenes we would have got in game. It also adds a cinematic quality to the story that appeals to me. I enjoy halo 2s story the most out of all of the games and Blurs cutscenes only enhanced it, losing the shallow sense of immersion is fine on my part if the best part about halo 2 outside of the MP is further improved.

Marty is a bitter old cus. Honestly, the pre-rendered cinematics are easily the best part of the remake. This dude has an axe to grind with 343, you can see it in all his answers. I know for a fact that Marty has had standing lawsuits with 343. Marty O’Donnell has a bad history that is not well known within the community, and he is not well regarded within the old bungie/new 343 leadership (Sketch, Joseph Staten, etc). Not to mention his fallout with new Bungie during the Destiny days. This isn’t to take away from his creative genius. His contributions to Halo and gaming are incredible. But he’s not an easy personality to work with
@innoclarke7435
2 жыл бұрын
Standing lawsuits with 343? I tried looking this up and found nothing at all about Marty and 343. He and Staten also will reply to each other on Twitter and don't seem to have any beef with each other. As for Bungie, that company is one that betrayed itself, not him. It absolutely submitted to Activision's deeply corporate behaviour entirely, even after they bought themselves out from it, as seen now. They have burned the goodwill of their long-time fans completely to the ground. Considering the whole problem with Bungie derived from him simply stating that Destiny's E3 trailer was made by Activision and not Bungie, I'd say Bungie and Activision were the ones being aggressively petty in that situation. In the end, Marty's got money and he's got global recognition for his talents. Activision has basically just Call of Duty now, having helped botch a moneymaker that they invested hundreds of millions into (fucking up their other IPs is an Activision staple), and Bungie's reputation is the lowest it has ever been, with countless customers pissed after having content they paid money for be removed outright, first with the Destiny 2 base game content, and soon with the Forsaken content, regarded as the best content the game's had. Whoops. All things considered, Marty's doing okay.

There are two composers that have dominated the music that has been the soundtrack of my life. John Williams since 1977 (Star Wars), and Marty O'Donnell since 1997 (Myth: The Fallen Lords). By FAR the two composers I have listened to the most in my life. And for the last 20 years or so I'm certain the balance has been tipped in favor of the Halo soundtracks. I mean, my current productivity mix is a 10 hour collection of Halo soundtracks that all just plays on shuffle in the background, when I really need to put my head down and get work done. So the fact that we have the kind of access to Marty that we do these days, between his own channel and interviews like this, is like having a composer commentary to my own soundtrack.
