Our tree of the day is the stunning Amaltas, also known as the Golden Shower Tree or Cassia Fistula. This popular ornamental tree isn't just a jungle beauty; you'll often spot its golden vines adorning streets and roadsides across India.
Did you know Amaltas is the state flower of Kerala? It thrives in diverse landscapes, from hilltops to dry rocky areas, showcasing its adaptability. The tree is easy to recognize when in bloom, with its cascading golden flowers creating a breathtaking sight during April-May and the monsoons.
Here's how you can identify the Amaltas:
🍃 Leaf: Rarely leafless, it sheds leaves briefly in Feb-March and During most of this time, you will see that the leaves are those smooth green pointy leaves which are in pairs and you’ll also sometimes see them in this brownish-red coppery red colour as well, and that happens when the leaves are actually new.
🌳 Bark: Variable in texture, from smooth pale gray to dark scabbed.
🌼 Flower: The showstopper! Gorgeous golden flowers hang like vines, a treat to witness.
🌿 Fruit: Long brown pods that fertilize a year after blooming, with seeds dispersed by animals like monkeys and jackals.
Beyond its beauty, Amaltas has practical uses too. Its bark provides tanning dyes, and its tough heartwood is perfect for agricultural tools. In Ayurveda, it's known as Aragvadha, meaning "disease killer," valued for its medicinal properties.
