Some of my fondest memories are of playing DKC on my uncle’s SNES at my grandmas house when I was a kid. She used to watch me for hours, and it was just one of the earliest games that I connected with in such a way that - when I play Donkey Kong, I feel like I’m back home when life seemed so simple. Thankfully she’s still here, but I know that one day when my grandma passes away, this game will be one of the things that makes me remember how wonderful my childhood was. Games are incredibly powerful. DKC is so special to me, and I’m sure it is to thousands of others too. Thank you for this GX. This was so cool to listen to and take a trip down memory lane.

Wow what a story. Its so great you still have her with you. I still remember Nov 21 1994 my gramma taking me to Sears on a rainy day to buy DKC and her watching me play it all night. She's gone now but every year I play through DKC on Nov 21 for her. I like to think she's still watching! P.s. You can never tell your grandma you love her enough. Spend as much time as you can with her while you can. You'll know what I mean someday.

Brandon Williams agreed, Smash was just to cement his place as THE villain of the series ala Ganon(dorf) (who also hasn’t appeared proper in a while and has had his share of expies). We still want this character to show up in the series (bonus points if they get him changing personas again). He and his minors were Nintendo baddies, who despite being the same characters, looked different every game, a perfect blend of familiarity and variety.

At the time, I thought Donkey Kong Country's pre-rendered graphics were pretty bleak compared to Nintendo's other endeavors on the SNES. I'm the type of person who can openly admit I never got into the game back then (not because it was hard) but because I never had much interest with it. At the time of the game's release, I remember going to a Blockbuster (remember those?) and a small group of gamers were talking about how good it was and tbh I was a little annoyed by it and just rented my DVDs someplace else. The next week, I had put in so many hours of Contra 3, F-Zero, Super Metroid, and Super Mario World and got so burnt out from them afterwards so I finally decided to get DKC to see what everyone was talking about and WOW!!! It changed the way I thought about the game and I have to say it's incredibly fun and challenging!!! I love and miss Rare!!!

@6:30 Absolutely. That's easily one of my favorite things about DKC games. I love that the worlds are designed and enemies placed and AI programmed such that you absolutely can fly straight through a level once you've mastered it. Not many games get that right, even today. That is to say, that DKC and several other games in the mid-late 90's were designed to heavily reward mastery. Mastery, imo, is lost pretty badly on most games or just undermined for "difficulty" or stats.

About the question with the gathering of bananas instead of bringing the whole stolen hoard back, I always imagined that those bananas hanging in the air for collecting, was part of the hoard that the Kremlings dropped on their way back to The Gangplank Galleon.

Thanks DKC For being a master class game (and series) and creating The Completionist's channel, too!

Great interview. Gregg Mayles is a genius when it comes to game design. Also for anybody interested, play Sea of Thieves. Truly is an amazing game.

Thank you Gregg/Rare for creating my two favorite platformers of all time, DKC1 and 2. The soundtracks never fail to give me that same sense of childish enjoyment I had since day 1 of playing the games. Tropical Freeze is great, of course, but these original games were almost TOO good and the music by David Wise (again also great in TF) elevated it to another level entirely. I will never forget my time with these games, they are some of my first real gaming memories.

I was four when Donkey Kong Country was released. It was one of the two very first video games I ever played (the other being Super Mario World), and I still play it to this day.

I love how this game series that debuted in Super Nintendo is getting a 25th Anniversary, I hope to see a special tourney to dedicate this anniversary, doesn't matter if we have 3 representatives in the game.

While it’s a shame that Nintendo doesn’t want to acknowledge Country’s 25th Anniversary with no Country themed tour in Mario Kart Tour for its anniversary we just want to celebrate Christmas early, the DK statue being removed from the Nintendo World store in NYC and most importantly Nintendo not wanting to announce a new DK game as we’ve gone 5 almost 6 years without a new DK game which has been the longest gap that the series has gone without a new game But it’s legacy will always be known by everyone around the world and I’ll always love the DK games no matter what

In what way would Donkey Kong Country 4 be different from DKC Returns and DKC Tropical Freeze?

The level designer for Donkey Kong Country looked at Super Mario Bros 3 (NES) for level design inspiration. NO shit! No wonder why the level design was so good in DKC. The studied from the best.

All I heard was "Donkey did a foot slide" and it finally hit me where DK's old dash attack in smash bros came from (probably not trpe but I'm sticking with it)

I was born in the same year of DKC and Rare had a big part of my youngest gaming years. I loved DKC and the N64 was a Rare Ware powerhouse. I have huge respect to the teams who made the titles.
