Fun facts about emus… 1. What exactly is an emu? Emus belong to a group of flightless running birds known as ratites, the most primitive of the modern bird families. The ratite family includes the kiwi, ostrich, cassowary, and rhea, all birds found only in the Southern Hemisphere. 2. Emus are huge. The emu is the second-largest living bird in the world (the ostrich is the largest). 3. What they lack in the air, they make up for on land. The common emu may not be able to soar, but for such a big bird it sure can run. This flightless bird has small wings relative to the size of its body. Its long, powerful legs, though, allow it to run up to about 30 miles (50 km) per hour. While running, the emu’s stride can be almost 9 feet (2.7 meters) long. Their strong legs also allow the bird to jump 7 feet (2.1 meters) straight up. facts about emu 4. Emu eyes are very adaptive. The emu has two eyelids. One eyelid is used for blinking, while the other prevents dust and sand to enter the eyes. Emus have good eyesight and hearing, which allows them to detect threats at some distance. 5. Ever seen an emu feather close up? Individual emu feathers have a loose and simple design. Most birds have one feather per follicle, but the emu grows a double-shafted feather from each follicle. 6. They’ll kick you into touch! Each emu foot has three forward-facing toes that allow it to grip the ground, thrusting the bird forward. A powerful kick is also handy for keeping predators at bay. 7. Trust us - those are some powerful legs! Emus are the only birds that have calf muscles. 8. They are pretty hefty. Its height averages 5.7 feet (1.75 meters). Males weigh 110 to 121 pounds (50 to 55 kilograms), and females weigh about 11 pounds (5 kilograms) more than males. 9. Where do emus live? They’re found primarily in Australia, but also in New Guinea, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, and the Philippines. interesting facts about emus 10. Their feathers are built to beat the heat. Emus beat the heat in hot, arid habitats: Their greyish-to-brownish body feathers provide almost complete protection from solar radiation. Though equipped with this natural sunscreen, they also live in grasslands, savannahs, and forests, preferring areas with access to standing water. 11. The emu diet is rather varied. Emus range over large areas, foraging on fruits, seeds, plant shoots, small animals, animal droppings, and insects. Emus are omnivores (eat both plants and animals) and look for food during the day. They eat a variety of plants, depending on the season. 12. Emus need to stay hydrated. They require a large amount of water, drinking 9-18 liters (2.5-5 gallons) daily. If not disturbed, they may drink continuously for ten minutes. 13. Emus don’t always know what they’re eating. Emus in captivity have been known to eat shards of glass, marbles, vehicle keys, jewelry, nuts and bolts, and other shiny objects. 14. But, there is some reasoning here. They swallow small stones (called gastroliths or gizzard stones) which stay in the gizzard and help grind up food. 15. The emu mating process isn’t always smooth. They mate and nest over the Australian winter, and it’s not always a loving affair... 16. You’ll never miss an emu’s call. The emu has a pouch in its throat that it uses to make booming grunting sounds to communicate during mating season. These calls are usually made during courtship and the breeding season heard up to 1.2 miles (2 km) away! 17. The female emu is dominant. Adult female emus are larger and heavier than males. 18. They mate for short periods. Mating pairs stay together for up to five months, after which females lay large, emerald-green eggs in expansive ground nests. 19. Men take on the childcare. The males incubate the eggs for about eight weeks without drinking, feeding, defecating, or leaving the nest. 20. Emu eggs are pretty massive. One emu egg has the same weight and volume as 10 to 12 chicken eggs! The eggs are dark green and shiny, with small pits on the surface. 21. Roosting is hard work! Roosting males lose up to a third of their body weight while incubating eggs. The females, meanwhile, have often moved on, sometimes mating with a different male in the same season. In a good season, a female emu may lay three complete clutches! 22. Emu children don’t always hang around. Chicks can walk just minutes after hatching and can leave the nest at about three days old. But they usually stay with their father for about 18 months. 23. The emu has lots of predators. Predators of the emu include dingoes and wedge-tailed eagles. Snakes and other nest-raiders devour emu eggs, but they’re not the only ones. 24. Emu eggs feed a lot of people! Humans farm emus for their meat and eggs, too. One emu egg can make an omelet big enough to feed four to six adults. 28. Emus are very nosy! Emus are inquisitive birds and have been known to approach humans if they see an unexpected movement of a limb or piece of clothing. In the wild, they may follow and observe people. 29. They are very oily birds. An emu’s body contains 3 gallons (13.6 liters) of oil. Emu oil is used in lotions, soaps, shampoo, and health care products. 30. Australian must love them! More than 600 places in Australia are named after the emu. The Australian coat of arms has the image of an emu and a kangaroo - both animals that cannot back up. The emu has a prominent place in Australian Aboriginal mythology, too, including a creation myth of the Yuwaalaraay and other groups in New South Wales who say that the sun was made by throwing an emu’s egg into the sky. The bird also features numerous etiological stories told across a number of Aboriginal groups. Via: factcity.com/facts-about-emus/

I follow Cogs Hill farm and they have an Emu named Nugget. He loves being scratched and petted and he will just lay down and let them love on him for a long time. He also loves the kiddy pool full of water to lay down in and play in. I don't remember how old Nugget is but he is so much fun to watch as he is a pet and raised by them since a baby. Nugget loves to race around the acre that he is in. I hope you enjoy your new pets.

If you have any questions about emus, you could try contacting Jason and Brooke from Cog Hill Family Farm. They hand raised their emu, Nugget and he is 2 years old now. Also if you want to find out the sex of the emus and not wait till their feathers grow in, you may be able to do like Lester at Ima Survivor Santuary did with his baby ostrichs with a pin prick blood test. They need just a drop of blood.

Yes, you should go over and see Cog Hill Farms, Imu named Nugget. Another thing to know is that Mary Carl is an outstanding young lady with all kinds of birds. Seriously, their are many adult bird farmers who call on her for advice from time to time. They are a very friendly family. Another u tube channel who just recently became the first successful Ostrich breeders in Texas is "Longhorn Lester's" & his wife Jamie from "Boots to Suits". They defeated all the odds because they were always told that they would never be able to hatch the eggs naturally in Texas. These are 3 u tube channels that I follow. All these people are very friendly & are always willing to help other u tube families when their asked for advice. Get I touch with them & become new friends who can help each other.

Mckenzie a couple of other facts about our EMU’s are, they are on the Australian coat of arms along with the kangaroo because both animals can’t walk or run backwards “meaning always moving forward” with grown Emu’s place a bag or blind fold over there eyes when moving them around otherwise good luck trying to get them to do what you want. Also they are a very dumb and inquisitive bird to get them to come to you just do something repetitive and they’ll come over and see what your doing. Warning two things, when they are in season or have young they’ll kick out at you and man oh man it hurts for days, the other is if they get out don’t chase them you’ll never catch them, even running through fences. An Australian singer songwriter John Williamson dose a song call old man emu it’s funny it’s on face book, get mum or dad to check it out first. Finally another thing here in Australia we have Emu races it’s also on KZitem, it’s so funny. Love your videos, wish we could buy some of your produce but importing to Australia would be difficult.

The emus are so cute I love them yall will have lots of fun with them. Definitely spend lots of time with them out in the yard with the kids playing with them they'll love eating the grass out in the yard and playing out there oh my gosh. Yall will have lots of laughs with their antics while yall have them out in the yard playing and having them chase yall around and all. I watch another channel hidden heights Farm they just got a couple of emus little ones like yall's so they've been taking theirs out in the yard and letting them play also to get them used to them and playing with them and all, it's so fun to watch them play they are little characters when you get them playing and they're used to yall and other human interaction definitely as much as you can get other people to come interact with them because they will be growing fast so the more people that interact with them now they will be used to different people coming up and interacting with them not just yall. God bless yall

Love the color green as well. Reminds me of us about 10 years ago - dry, dry, dry and then the tap turned on and things filled to overflowing and now its drying up again. The cycles of nature! Good job guys! Surprised you can not sex emu's. Interesting.

You’re doing a legitimate business exchange in the parking lot of a restaurant. Hmm. Yeah, I think Al Capone tried to use that excuse one. 😂

It has been a while since I have been able to see you cutting hay. Real happy to hear that the grass is finally growing there. Having to buy hay during this transition time, would have made things that much more difficult.

The hayfield look amazing. After the dry look from last year. Here in SW Indiana first cuttings already started. Emus will be fun to watch grow and learn about. Have a great evening.

Wow this is SUPER cool. Awesome road trip, love it. It’s so great to see the grasses growing. Kenzie needs to start a beef jerky flavored pop tart. The grasses is so good to see, things are going well for the Galloway’s!

Your daughter said it correctly, they are emu’s (eeemmmmuuuus) not emoos. You guessed it I’m Australian.
