Fun fact: they’re called the sleeping bear dunes because of the old story passed down. A mother bear and her two cubs were trying to escape a wildfire one day, but there was no where to go so they started to swim. The mother lead the cubs hoping they were still behind her, until she made it to land and they were gone. The mother was devastated, so she climbed the land then laid down to watch the water. Waiting for her cubs to find her. She waited and waited until sand covered her and even then did not move. She formed the dune here waiting for her lost cubs to return home.

Sounds like an old Indian story like: "brother buzzard carried a piece of the sun on his noggin and that's why they're now all bald".🤭 Or "seven little indian princesses were chased by a grizzly but the rocks rose them up safely, yet that mean ol' bear tried to scratch at them and that's how the striations got on the sides of what is now Devil's Tower" Or "one nice spring morning the porridge was too hot to eat so...." 🥱🥱🥱

There was a dune about 400 feet like this near where I went to school. We used to take old surfboards and ride them down the dune to the water. Then it would take nearly an hour to hike back up. We would do it multiple times a day with a keg of beer and snacks at the top (hauling the keg up in the other side was also horrible). Eventually we also anchored a large series of climbing ropes into the dune and ran it down to the water to assist in climbing back up. Good times.

When i was in my prime running days, i ran from the beginning of the sleeping bear dunes to this point in the video, non stop. Its 3 miles as the crow flys. Probley 5 going up and down the dunes. When i got there, i was the only one around for miles. The scary thing about it is,.....at the edge of the sand and water, the dune keeps going straight down. SO, as an example, when you're 10 feet from the shore, you're in around 15-18 feet of water. I was out about 20 feet and couldnt swim to touch the bottom. As i floated there, i looked around. All i could see was the water, the sand and the sky. I felt like a drop in the ocean. Got out of the water quick. Ran all the way back carrying my tennis shoes which i took off on the first hill in the beginning of the park. I love that place. Also ran 1/2 way around houghton lake and back. Set records for 1/2 mile and 1/4 mile back in to day. Was running college and Olympic times. But as my life goes, i was barely recognize outside of my junior high coaches. Won all the city meets. Now, at 60, i cant run across the street. Life is funny that way but those are memories i will always cherish. Michigan is a special place for sure.

The legend or the dunes is so sad: There was once a mother bear and her 2 cubs she could not find them any food, so she decided to cross the great lake with her cubs to find food As they kept walking/swimming (depending on the version) the mother bear kept saying:" come on cubs keep going." One cub called:" momma momma im hungry." The mother bear just said:" keep moving you got this my cubs." The hungry cub laid down, falling asleep, drowning, and became the first island near the dunes. but the mother did not notice, too focused on crossing the lake Soon her second cub called:" momma momma im tired." But the mother just said:" keep going cubs we are almost there." Soon the tired cub laid down and just as their sibling became the second island near the dunes. But the mother still did not notice continuing to call:" come in cubs keep going we are almost there. Eventually the mother reached the shore, she called:" We made it cubs!" Then she turned and could not see her cubs. She called both their names loudly, but could not see them. Too tired to continue looking, the mother decided to lay down on the shore and wait for her cubs to make it across to the shore. But the cubs could never make it to the shore, and mother bear became the dunes. Where she still waits for her cubs

Did a similar dune in grand marais u.p. Michigan every summer growing up. Was such a blast. Over the years it got even more dangerous with erosion exposing rocks so you needed to be careful going down. It was originally a log slide for the timber crews that would send the logs down to float on the lake getting them to a better shipping location.

3 of my 4 kids and I did this. The mistake for us was doing it on a very hot day; but all of us got back up. I even had to go 1/3 or so back down to get water to my oldest son and climb back up with him. It was an accomplishment that they were proud of and very glad we did it. Next time, if there be, we will go on a cooler day or wait till near sunset yo start back up.

They should have a big rope tied to one of the trees at the top of the dune.

been here, it’s no joke. i’m an athletic girl but damn, what they don’t tell you is the hour+’long trek you’ll take through what looks like an actual desert, just to finally get to this area where it downhills to the lake. the hike just to get here is honestly second hardest to climbing back up the hill when you go all the way to the bottom like i did. (took me an hour to get back up).

Are you high? Its Michigan. There's no Hour long trek through the desert. Its forest all around, then the shore and the dunes. Don't lie to chase clout. No one cares.

@@darkhobohave you even been here? i’m from michigan as well and have personally been to these dunes. There is a 4 mile trail to the big dune sand which is actually not desert but looks like it before you reach the shoreline. Also this is sleeping bear not just any dune.

You are confusing 2 different areas in sleeping Bear national park. The long hike that looks like a desert is the “Dune Climb” that one is a parking lot that you can walk to a slopping dune to climb up. Once to the top you can go back down to parking lot or you can hike 4 miles to the lake with multiple dune to climb up and down. The other one is along the scenic drive that you park and follow the side walk to the dune that over the lake. That one tells you it will you about 3 hrs to hike back up the dune or you get rescued for $3000. I love close and see the helicopter s go to rescue people all the time. It’s no joke. People who get rescued are the same ones who think Yellowstone is a petting zoo!!

It's the soft sand that fights you every step. The $3k is for a rescue chopper lift. My trick was to sidewind it. But i still struggled.

the 3k is for a boat, a chopper would not be able to pick you up
