These are the most underrated drums ever I don’t know why though because these sound great I own these drums and don’t see nothing wrong with them if you’ve been playing for a while I’d get the 7 piece set

+Miles-From-Home Thanks for checking it out, man!! Glad it provided some end-of-the-day happiness for you. :-) And, yeah, the hammered steel snare is KILLER! Tama is knocking it out of the park with all their snare options these days.

Again, amazing video with the kit I want! Thanks for posting Also, what do you think of the snare that comes standard with the kit?
@DonGunnRecording

+Gabriel Zarruk Thank you! The included snare is great; I've used it on a number of records as I keep it tuned very low and dead for an effect, so I've set it up to not sound like any of my other snares. The stock heads are the weakest part of it, so if you change them out to better ones, I think there's nothing wrong with it at all.

Sounds great, Donn! Nice stereo image... Do you ever find yourself going for sdc as OHs? What´s your take on ldc vs sdc on OH duties? Cheers!

+JulianFernandez Thanks, Julian! I do occasionally use SDCs for overheads; I have a pair of KM84s and some sE5s; both sound great but are a little more "focused" rather than "broad" like LDCs tend to be. It depends on the sound I'm looking to achieve from the kit - more "full kit in the OHs" vs. "cymbal mics".

What do you use to mount your splashes?

Just some Tama arms and clamps - nothing fancy.

You have used a significant number of mic combinations through your video history. Just get bored and move on or are you hearing something specific that prompts the change? I hear subtle differences but overall your drums sounds like your drums regardless of the the mic setups. I would be happy with any of the different mic setups although the beta 56's on the toms seemed noticeably more one dimensional. The sustain you get with the 2 ply heads is also noticeable. They always seem very choked on my kit while the 1 ply heads sing forever. Great sounding result all around!

+AudioWonderland Thanks! Yeah, I get bored easily and like to mix things up regularly; as you noted, my drums tend to sound like my drums no matter what, so a good mic is a good mic, as long as I don't screw the pooch with my tuning or recording. :-) Regarding 2-ply heads, I've had the best luck with them on thin shelled drums that don't have reinforcement rings.

Is it birch or maple?

Do you have a specific approach to tuning?

On toms I tend to go for the bottom head around a major third higher than the top head, but I'm far from scientific about it; I find the range that a drum resonates the most and where I like the tone/feel of the tuning and start there. I like a wide spread of tone between the highest and lowest drum, so generally start with the largest floor tom, get it sounding nice and big and then proceed up the drums. With snare I like the bottom head quite tight and the top I'll vary depending on the pitch/feel I need for a situation. Kick, I like it as low as I can get it without the batter head feeling mushy - a turn above finger-tight on the tension rods is usually enough. I'll change the tension on the kick's resonant head to vary how much sustain I want. Hope that helps!

Well you do a great job of it. I'm a bit of a tuning freak and I truly enjoy the sound of your kits. Good ear! I was especially drawn to these Tama Superstar videos. I'm considering a Superstar kit myself. I own a Starclassic, Ludwig Keystone, and Premier Signia, all of which are great kits, but I've been wanting something in the seven piece configuration. When I saw the price on these and heard your videos it convinced me to consider taking the Superstar route over dropping the money it would cost to buy a kit that big from a more expensive line.

Thanks so much! I've had two Starclassic Maple kits in the past and will get a B/B next (never had bubinga anything and the last birch kit I had was a Premier Genista in the mid-90s). I kept buying other kits from other builders, and while they were great, I always wind up back at Tama, so I think I'm staying now!

I'm the floor manager at a drum and percussion shop and get to tune up kits from all the major manufactures and I can say this about the Tama B/B's, they are something special!
