I love your reviews. Always helpful and helped me make the jump to the 150-600 G2. I found the same results using the 1.4 extender and ended up returning it. Everyone I talked to said I was expecting too much. I felt I was only expecting what Tamron's marketing material promised and for my purposes (wildlife), it just wasn't usable. I wish, for the sake of our craft, that I was wrong but I do feel better about my own analysis now. Thanks.

Thank you for this review. It encouraged me to pick up the 1.4x for the 70-200 2.8 G2. I really can't tell too much of a difference in IQ with/without the teleconverter except at 280mm. But even then the difference is slight. It's an expensive addition to a zoom lens but now I know why. Also I'm finding that the VC still performs amazingly well even with the TC.

Actually, I tested it before doing a shoot. It has a real problem with auto focus even when I used the new G2 version of the lens. Mechanically it works fine but the 80D also does not like that combination in "live view" mode. I would not recommend. I actually like the 80D with the Tamron 150-600mm G2 since you get the 1.6x crop factor with that APSC sensor. I'm headed to Tanzania in March for a photo safari and was trying out different lens combinations for that trip. I plan to use the 150-600 on my 80D and I'll have the Canon 100-400 L II on my 6D MkII. I will carry my 1.4x for that combination.

Great review Dustin: thanks a lot, I had hoped someone would do this. I have a D500 and as I understand it my camera will only autofocus with a lens of maximum aperture up to f8. I think the same applies to a number of Canon cameras. If I am correct, the 1.4TC takes the maximum aperture to 8.82 and therefore autofocus should not, theoretically, work.

Thanks for the review, Dustin. Did you notice any loss of focal points with either the 1.4x or 2x on your 5D4? One of the issues with Canon's 2x is that many of the older lenses lose some of the cross point focusing. No so with Canon's 70-200 lens. So with either Tamron's 1.4 or 2x on Tamron's 70-200, where there any of these issues coupled with the Canon 5D4? I'm looking forward to your next review (final review?) on focus speed on this lens compared to the Canon.

I just bought the 80D and the Tamron 150-600 and well as the Tamron lens extender x2. I had no thought that the camera would auto focus with the x2 extender on there. I have found that part of the problem is solved with the 150-600 by having the battery grip with the extra drive power. Perfect? No but better than with the single battery for sure. My interest is wild life and this gives me some great reach. Sure there are better solutions but the price gets way out of my budget really quickly. So my plan is the use the equipment and get as good as I can with the manual focus where needed and learn to work around the quirks when needed as well. I find that spending time training with the equipment you have will get you a lot farther than wishing for what you can't manage.

@scarmenl

Dustin Abbott I think it might be more available amps or miliamps in this case then voltage. I don't know for sure I just know it works. For me also, I am a big guy and the battery grip make a camera more comfortable to hang onto. Oddly my wife who is not very big still finds she likes cameras with the battery grip also. She says that the little bit of extra weight is worth it for the ease of holding and manipulating the camera. Thanks, by the way, for your reviews. Your reviews helped in my buying choices.

Great video, and supremely well timed as I am looking at these. (for Canon 70 - 200 f2.8 II) Given the price is the same in the UK though as the Canon extenders, I am more likely to go for the native ones. Unless there is a marked image quality difference in favour of the Tamron. Thanks Dustin.

It all depends on what lenses you plan to use them on. If you are going to shoot Canon lenses, buy the Canon extender. If you are going to shoot Tamron lenses, buy the Tamron extenders. They are both paired to the focus algorithms of their own native lenses.

Thank you Dustin for this useful information. I suspect the retail value of these Tamron TC down the line would motivate most to stick with Canon for now as the Canon would hold their resale value better. Tamron was wise to not sell these at a loss, I suspect they would of had to to go any cheaper. A place holder product might be worth more than a loss leader in this global economy. The Tamron TCs being little sharper than the Canon III is promising for the future and the final selling point for the heavy croppers like myself. I'm surprised the metadata is wonky, that would be annoying but can be dealt with with some note taking. I could see the 2.0x on the 150-600 for documenting a nest with manual focus, indeed only for such specialized purposes. Maybe on a $10,000 500mm lens the 2.0x would AF well but I would expect a good bit of AF compromise. I am looking forward to your Tamron 70-200 2.8 AF review. I might trade up to the Tammy 70-200 2.8 and TC away from my 300 f/4.0L IS for focal range flexibility and a couple more stops of VC. A rental is likely wise to compare combinations. The 80D + 300L + older Tamron 1.4x; Auto-Focused impressively in decent light.
@DustinAbbottTWI
7 жыл бұрын
Good points all. If you intend to shoot Tamron lenses, though, you will get better results with the Tamron extender. I wish the extenders were more universal, but they seem to be fairly specialized with brands. Tamron tells me it has to do with focus algorithms; they achieve focus in different ways than Canon lenses do.

If anyone wants to shoot at 400mm, why buying the $1300 70-200 lens and $250 converter? Just go for Canon 77D body and the EF-S 55-250mm lens. It has the nice AF of the 80D and the 55-250 is perfectly fine in terms of optics. If you don't believe me watch the review on this very KZitem channel :) Total cost is $948 and you will have not only a lens and converter, but a completely functional everyday compact and capable camera with a lens created for it. Unless the lens exhibits outstanding optics without the teleconverter prepare to be totally dissapointed when using a teleconverter. Any faults the lens has will be multiplied by the same factor of the teleconverter as a minimum, often worse. Using Nikon teleconverters with my Nikon 300f2.8 VRII lens they all (1.4/1.7/2.0) give excellent results that's because the lens is exceptional to start with. In optics there really is no free lunch! I'm sure you know these facts, hopefully people wont waste their good hard earned cash looking for a cheap solution because in the world of optics if looking for good results there literally is no cheap solution!

I haven't used the 2x extender, but I didn't like the Tamron with the Canon 1.4x. It didn't register maximum aperture correctly. I'm generally not a big fan of 2x extenders anyway, as I feel they add far too many compromises. If you want to shoot 400mm, you should buy a different lens (their 100-400 VC is a good option).

Hi Dustin, thank you very much for your review and valuable information. I heard that 70-200 G2 can have hard time to produce sharp images with TC (i believe it was 1.4 version). Main issue was that the combo was not reliable to produce constantly good results when shooting - one shot was OK, second shot taken just seconds after was not sharp. Reviewer thought, that it could have been caused by image stabilization, but did not test it. I would like to use this combo in landscape - on tripod with IS turned off, focusing manually. My question is - did you test the 70-200 with TC also on tripod? How would you rate the shot from sharpness point of view? Was it comparable to the image quality without TC? Thank you very much, Stefan

Dustin, a related question if you don't mind. I'm going to get FoCal for G2 lenses and dial in adjustments with the TAP-in console. Does the TAP treat the lens+converter as a separate lens and therefore would the lens behave differently when it recognizes the TC is attached (considering that I calibrate with and without TC and dial in separately)? Also on a related note, for TAP infinity target would you use 50x max focal length or simply pick a far target? Thanks so much, I find you are one of top advisors in this area.
@DustinAbbottTWI
6 жыл бұрын
The answer to the first question is yes, the combination with the extender is treated separately. I find there is a practical limit for the distance you can be away and still have a small enough depth of field to matter. With this combination somewhere around 25 times is probably your practical limit

Great review Dustin. I have the Tamron 70-200 G2. Wanting to do nature photography Im looking at the 2x teleconverter or forking over an extra $400 for the new Sigma 100-400. Is the drop in image quality that far off when using the teleconverter? Is the Sigma that much sharper? Do like the fact that even with the teleconverter the Tamron would still be a faster lens at f5.6.

+pattons3rd Is your copy of the Tamron nice and sharp at 200mm? If so, and if you don't don't regularly shoot the 200-400mm focal length, then that's a good choice. I always recommend that people cover a focal length they regularly use with a bare lens, though.

if you add the 1.4x to the 150-600 will the f/6.3 at 600mm become an f/8 or will it go above f/8? Normally a f/5.6 will become f/8 but I'm unsure with the f/6.3 cause its a half stop. Hi Simon, my recommendation really depends on how you plan to use the lens. If you primarily shoot in the 70-200mm range and need a larger maximum aperture, then buy a TC. If you primarily shoot wildlife or something where you need more reach, then go for the Canon. The TC combination is NOT going to be as good as a native lens covering 400mm either in IQ or focus performance.

@DustinAbbottTWI

There's no hard and fast rule for that. Theoretically a larger front element allows for more light gathering, but it is really the size of the aperture that most affects light gathering (the optical formula and coatings will also play a role in light transmission). I was hoping to find out how it attaches to the lens.

Just line up the dots at the rear and attach the extender like you would the lens to the camera.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Yes that's what I would have though but no dots. Do you have to push real hard?

No you don't. And there are alignment aids there (dots)

Hi Dustin, thank you for this review... much appreciated... I may need your advice... I have just acquired my first full frame which is a second hand sony E-mount mirrorless camera - And I'm thinking to purchase the Tamron 150-600 G2 and the Tamron TC-X20... But I see the G2 comes for A-mount instead of the E-mount... So i need to get the LA-EA-3 convertor, right? Thing is though, I can't seem to find the TC-X20 for Sony... does that even exist? I was looking to get this combo to work: Tamron 150-600mm for sony A + TC-X20 for sony A+ LA-EA-3 But since I don't see any TC-X20 for sony, I am wondering if i should get the Tamron 150-600 G2 for Canon or Nikon and then the TC-X20 for Canon/Nikon and then get a suitable Canon/Nikon Mount to E-mount adapter... Does that even exist? And would it work well?

How would these tamron 1.4x & 2x teliconvertors perform with the tamron 18-400 lens, and will it spoil the image quality if stacked for higher zooms? I am Shashin Mistry from India. I love your videos they are amazing and very informative.

I don't think they can be mounted on the 18-400. Not enough room. It would definitely have a negative impact on the IQ, too.

Can u please tell me about the focusing speed of 18-400mm with 800d or 80d...for wildlife or birding

I can't, really. I reviewed that lens several years ago and wouldn't recall outside of what my review said. I've reviewed 60+ lenses since then.

are there extenders for m50?

I don't believe so. There really hasn't been a lot of development for the EF-M mount from Canon or anyone else.
