With fall storms blowing on our shores we've been getting plenty of petrels in the clinic. We are happy to announce Tanavast, a Storm Petrel found here in Sitka, Alaska, is ready to head back out into the wild!
Storm petrels tend to mistake wet pavement for ocean water, and upon landing are unable to take flight again. This is because their legs are so far back they have an awkward time walking on land, let alone making the run-up needed to take flight. Happily the solution to their troubles is simple! All we have to do is wait until night and toss them back into the ocean. Nighttime is when these little birds tend to be most active, and also give the advantage of avoiding predators like gulls.
