These are the kinds of waves my 10 year old daughter and I are surfing on the Columbia River... GREAT fun, and definitely a "proud Daddy" moment watching my kiddo handle her 14 ft boat with so much confidence.

Thank you. The bulbous bows on the front of the ship are supposed to minimize the wave and thereby improve fuel efficiency. Maybe it has to go faster. Do they have a similar "trailing wave" when they are coming into port? (Both your videos I have seen show down-bound ships.)

It all depends on tide, wind direction, and how low the ship is sitting in the water. I’ve seen huge ships moving over 15 knots hardly produce a wave. Other times very slow ships sitting low in the water create big waves. Mainly on the outbound run. It’s more of a rebound effect when the water rushes back in behind the ship to fill the displacement the ship created. Then the two surges of water bounce off of each other back towards the shore. Wave gains height when it moves over the shallower area on the sides of the channel.

Keep underestimating that water & you're gonna be filming from off shore

Trust me. I know what it’s capable of. I’ve seen plenty of people who thought it was just a regular wave get feet knocked out from under them.
