There are many ancient temples of Bholenath, whose history is associated with Mahabharata and Ramayana. One such ancient temple of Lord Shiva is in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand, whose history is associated with the Mahabharata period. Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple is one of the most famous temples in Dehradun. According to mythological belief, in ancient times, Bhole Shankar appeared here in the form of Deveshwar. Water drops keep falling from a rock on the Shivling of this temple. The main sanctum sanctorum of this temple dedicated to Bholenath is inside a cave, in which water drops keep falling continuously on the Shivling. For this reason, this temple of Lord Shiva was named Tapkeshwar. Tapk is a Hindi word, which means falling drop by drop. According to a legend of Tapkeshwar Temple located on the banks of Tons River, this cave is considered to be the residence of Dronacharya (the guru of Kauravas and Pandavas during the Mahabharata). His son Ashwatthama was born in this cave. After the birth of the son, his mother was unable to feed him milk. He prayed to
Bholenath, after which Lord Shiva made cow udders on the roof of the cave and a stream of milk started flowing on the Shivling, due to which Lord Shiva was named Dudheshwar. In Kaliyug, this stream took the form of water, due to which this temple is called Tapkeshwar.
