🍁This is how maple syrup is made - from start to finish.
Have you ever wanted to make your own maple syrup or walnut syrup? Here is everything you need to know about how to tap maple trees, how to tap walnut trees, and how to boil the sap down into delicious maple syrup!
(I'll also mention here to please like and follow to help support us! It's VERY much appreciated!) :)
🍁We tap our backyard maple and walnut trees every year in the spring at a very specific time. For us, that is typically in late February or early March in the Okanagan Valley in BC, but that tree tapping time will vary depending on your climate.
*Here's the key for tree tap timing: you will want to watch for when your nights are still below freezing, but the days are warming up to above freezing temperatures (day temperatures of 5C or 41F, or higher is perfect).
WHY? This is when the trees are waking up from winter and are pumping the stored, sugary sap from the roots, up to where the leaves will grow. At night, the sap goes back down the trunk and into the roots.
It's this unique pumping cycle, exclusive to this time of year, that allows us to harvest the sap. Once the day temperatures are warm, and the night temperatures warm up as well, the tree will keeps those nutrients up in the buds so the trees can encourage leaf growth.
