Don't beat yourself up, you really did great. Many (most?) times there are some unforseen challenges that one has to deal with in looong events. Thanks for the update. Congrats Neil 👏 you are a motivation to all of us.

Cheers mate. I'm really happy to have completed the distance. Yeah, there were a few things I stuffed up, but that's just part of ultra running. I enjoyed the day, despite some of the struggles. Thanks for watching and for your support, I really appreciate it.

Well done Neil.......we are a dissatisfied bunch us runners aren't we, always pulling to bits our performances. You did an incredibly good job, and created a memory that no one can ever take away from you, so take the time to celebrate THE GOOD a little more. Your transparency and humility is great, and whether someone is a "rookie" or not, things can always be done better, so thanks for sharing your thrills and spills. Rest well, and do what the heart desires next.

Thanks for that comment Mark, it really does sum up everything we are as runners. Yeah, I'm celebrating the good, i'm not too old to get learning (or making mistakes), but overall I'm proud to have reached that finish line. I would never have imagined doing 100k, but now I have. I'm taking some time to enjoy a little down time, but I'm sure there will be new adventures to have. And you are right, 'Age is no barrier'. Thanks for all your support.

Thanks mate. The preparation wasn't too bad, but the body was craving a break during the taper for this. Taking a bit of down time now before plotting the next move.

Hi Neil, I suffered with blisters as well in the SG5, unfortunately blisters started between drop bags 2 and 3 so did not have option to change socks or shoes when I needed. So my big takeaway is to take a change of socks in my pack! I only lost 1kg in weight by the end, and felt strong all way to the end so I think I got my nutrition and hydration right (but this was my third 100+ event). I have read your body can only take in 150 to 200 cals per hour max so most runners will be on a deficit from eating, so it is important to get your body used to getting energy from your body's fat reserves. Also hydration very important to allow digestion to work as fast as it can. It's something I've worked on since UTA100 and BTU110 and it paid off for me. I had done research on the course but didn't know about those stairs down to Redwood. I would have trained more for stairs had I known, but my UTA100 training helped me a bit and my quads were pretty good at the end with no problems going up or down stairs. Your training prpgramme was excellent but I think you would have benefited from at least one longer run. I found GC50 at start of December was beneficial for me to do as it was far enough away from race day. I could have even made it longer (upto 2/3 distance was recommended by squadrun). Well done on your time, excellent for a first run at this distance. Recover well.

Thanks Alan, some really important information in there. Nutrition is something I will need to explore in future. And you are probably right, I may not have done enough to get my body used to using its fat reserves. I definitely think on erred on the long run - I really should have gone much longer early in January. But it's a learning game. If I do another, then I will know in future. With the blisters, I carried Compeed blister patches - they saved my big toe. They go on just like a Band-Aid. I had them in a little care package with Vaseline etc and I'm glad I did. Hope the recovery is going well.

Neil that was a champion effort just to finish. I watched the whole of the previous vlog and definitely got a bit worried when I saw the energy and fatigue set in. Like you said, more rest/naps (though I'm a bit restless myself before marathons) and more calories consumed (that is a crazy amount of calories to get down though) would do a whole lot of good if you happen to do such a long event again. Thanks again for the videos so far. I don't expect an ultramarathon for me on the horizon anytime soon but it's been amazing following you along this journey from training to the actual marathon itself.

Cheers mate. Despite the low patches, I thoroughly enjoyed the day. It's so true that an ultra trail run is just an excuse for a food smorgasbord. Next time I need to indulge much more. You should never say never. I never thought I would do a 100k and..... well! Thanks for watching.

Congratulations on the finish. I’ve enjoyed watching your journey. The race vlog was great. I’ve done a couple of ultras myself, the longest being 58km. They’re such a learning experience, you never know what’s going to happen on race day. Once you’ve had a well earned rest I reckon you’ll get the itch to do another one

Thanks for sharing Neil and congrats again! I’m from Sydney but I’m running a 54k Trail Ultra in the UK in July so your recaps and tips are welcome. Last year I ran half (1:41) and marathon (3:38) PBs but this will be my first trail ultra and struggling to work out a suitable pace but your 8ks per hour sounds like a good pace to work to in my new Speedgoat 5s!
@runwithwoody

Hi Matt. The UK ultra sounds interesting. Find a suitable pace for the trails is key, so you need to experiment with this during training. My main goal was too finish and I though 7-8km/h sounded about right. Just make sure you know what the course is and what to expect so that you work similar into your training. I appreciate you watching the videos, and hope you have picked up a tip or 2.

Congrats Neil, that was a great run. Not training for the route conditions is what tripped me up last month, but it wasn't really possible to train locally on similar terrain. I'll be doing more S&C before going back next year. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do next, you'll have built up a huge aerobic base, good time to try a few short & fast races? (when you feel the urge)

Hi Nigel. I am usually all over checking out the course etc before a race, and having done the 50k there previously I may have a little too cocky about knowing what to expect. Forgetting those stairs was a huge mistake. It was a good kick in the pants to make sure it doesn't happen again. I'm thinking out a few things for the future, but nothing concrete yet. A bit of a rest and then back in to it.

I've been toying with the idea of doing a first 100km ultra this year but I must admit I'm having second thoughts given how difficult you were finding it. You're a much better marathon runner than I and can only imagine that translates to ultras too. At the very least I need to build up to some significant mileage.
@runwithwoody
Жыл бұрын
Hi Dom, don't discount the 100k, it was a lot of fun despite some of the struggles. If you build up a strong aerobic base you won't have a problem. I had one clear objective and that was to complete the distance and enjoy the experience. I got that. Now it's your turn. Good luck.

Hey Neil. A question on what worked and what didn't. How did you feel about your taper? You said to your quads were smashed in those steps but do you feel you were rested enough rather than not enough training?
@runwithwoody
Жыл бұрын
Hi Alan. I was happy with the taper, but I think the body was looking for a break, not running a 100k event. I felt fresh for the event, but with no training on stairs leading in, it really bit me hard. I have enjoyed the down time over the past 2 weeks and will take it easy on a few runs this week. No real plans yet, so in no hurry.
