Actually, as a mechanical engineer, not joking, the 1992-1996 xv10 camry is one of the best engineered cars. The layman or average car enthusiast will not understand why though. A 1992-1994 Camry is among the longest lasting cars ever created. No journalist with a liberal arts degree or boomer will understand why though

Lol at the old guy talking about them making throwaway cars. Literally all cars from the 40's, 50's & 60's would rust within 3-5 years to the point the car was junk.
@hollowdonte

That was more a problem with the oil and gasoline we were using back then then it was with the way the cars were built. Modern cars will last even less on that old oil and gas. In my eyes that three to five years is pretty damn impressive when you're running fuel with flakes of metal in it.
@AFTER_MIDNITE

@@hollowdonte Okay, forget about rust, let’s talk about reliability and value. People traded in their cars more frequently than they do now because they weren’t capable of achieving the high mileage that modern antiques/classics could. Old classics weren’t reaching hundreds of thousands of miles before they were junked, yet somehow this elderly man is calling 90s vehicles disposable. As for the prior designation that cars with antique plates can only be driven for parades and other limited uses, 1) that makes it unreasonable for people to maintain a second vehicle that only has limited usage, therefore there’s less incentive to keep these vehicles roadworthy, and 2) only a small percentage of the population watches parades. More people see it and get more enjoyment from seeing these cars being driven on the road instead of wasting away in storage until parade time a few times each year. Also, cars not regularly driven is a death sentence. We all know the problems that occur to cars from sitting. Let alone if people can’t enjoy their cars regularly then they’re disinclined to keep them.

This old man feels special because he owns 1940s cars, and for him those japanese cars are not special at all, even if they are more than 25 years old. Well, that is only his personal opinion, who is he to determine those cars are not antique? According to the state law those cars qualify just for the age. So, what is the problem?

Car hobby is full of classist/ageist gatekeeping thanks to boomers which makes getting classic car insurance hard on anything 1976-1994 era. You can circumvent this by getting an Agreed Value Policy on your car or keeping at least over 5 figures set aside in the event of an accident with liability.

I don't know why anyone would want to be restricted as to how many miles and use of vehicle by registering as a historical vehicle unless it's to exempt the inspection. Don't you still have to pay personal property or ad valorum tax ?
@AFTER_MIDNITE

Most US cities/states don’t have property tax on vehicles. The only taxes are road registration fees. And registering a vehicle as antique does indeed exempt it from inspection, which can be difficult for older vehicles to pass in cities/states with emissions testing. Their complaint is that the change in the law doesn’t limit the yearly mileage on an antique vehicle anymore.

How is it stretching what an antique is if it literally qualifies by how old it is?! The old guy even said newer cars are disposable, so these old 90s cars still on the road are indeed rare, and they cost a considerable amount in repairs to keep on the road. Your complaint isn’t truly that these cars aren’t antiques, you’re just upset that the law now has a loophole that permits people to drive their antique vehicles daily.
@hollowdonte

Yes because the car is almost thirty years old it is still considered an antique whether you like the make or model or not or think it's special or not. How little of a life do you have to have to worry about how other people register their vehicles and to judge them on something you have no education in whatsoever?
