I’ve started target training both my coastal carpet python and my bredli python over the last 4 feeds, using a home made target. Would definitely recommend people give it a go - even though we haven’t been doing it very long it’s been invaluable already, particularly with my bredli who was prone to striking at the glass whenever he was hungry and saw movement outside. I was scared he would break his jaw doing that 😖 but hasn’t struck at the glass at all lately. He seems to have already learnt that he won’t be fed unless I present the target first. 😍

I started target training my snakes recently and I've also been snapping my fingers to signal to my ball python that the enclosure is open and she can come out, she understood very quickly! She's not yet as interested in the target as my plains hognoses are though. Your videos are what inspired me to start training them and I'm very glad I found this channel!

@@dantan1249 Just broadening a bit on this in case you were curious: snake's hearing range is sounds between 40-2,000 hertz. The human voice generally ranges from 500-1,000 Hz, so they certainly can hear us just in a different way. Lori did make a video on this titled "Snake Hearing, Training and More!" it was pretty cool to watch. Our voices to them basically sound like they are underwater.

You touched on something important with shy snakes. I have some that don't respond to the target and won't always eat off the tongs either. I remember you saying you first noticed a python targeting a dish. I'll keep my bouy type target for the ones that follow it but I'm switching to a flat target for those that prefer that I leave the prey item for them.

I learned the hard way that I shouldn't use a tennis ball to make a target - when my snake struck at it, he was able to sink his teeth into the 'fuzzy' surface, and that complicated the whole interaction. I'd think that very soft rubber balls might create the same issue!

I have not tried, but I wonder about racquetballs. I have narrowed down what I find works now though so not sure if in would be up for trying those out. I’m using flat plastic and the hard round balls, along with the buoys.

I've been bouncing around a thought for pythons and boas that "see heat". Watching feeding videos of Dumeril's boas and researching ways to get them off live food. In doing so I have come up with a couple of species specific theories based on anecdotal experiences that I want to test (he should arrive Thursday) I also have considered what if we put our targets in the freezer immediately prior to use? Pythons and boas "see" heat, so it stands to reason they can also "see" cold, so would a cold target offer a thermal contrast in addition to visual contrast? A cold target might be more visible due to this contrast while still differentiating it from prey. Your pythons don't seem to have any trouble seeing your targets so maybe unnecessary but just a thought I had.

You can be creative when it comes to cues and use anything as a cue or target as long as the animal is recognizing it for the intended purpose. There are documented training trials using scent with garter snakes and an illuminated button with wild Burmese pythons. I have used a flashlight as a cue for one of our Pituophis. I haven’t tried varied temperature as a cue, you would have to experiment with it to find out if it was effective. Specifics sounds, vibrations, or tactile signals could also be tried. Deaf and blind dogs are trained with touch cues and for example.

I came across the Burmese python study yesterday as I was going down this rabbit hole. This occurred to me because these boas seem to recognize thawed mice more as prey when they are heated up considerably. They also seem to prefer birds and birds body temperature runs up to 10 degrees warmer according to a couple of online sources. So temperature does seem to affect this species food response at least in recognizing the prey initially. It makes me wonder if they rely on temp as much or more than eyesight. Or perhaps the two are paired in a way that I can't comprehend.

It is up to you whether you want each to have their own target or use the same one. I have some snakes that each have their own target because I train them at the same time. For most though I just use the same target and clean it in between uses. Pythons can see blue and green. I find they respond more saliently to blue.

What sort of stick would you recommend for a reticulated python? I'm wanting to target train her so moving her will be easier as she gets larger, as well as to aid in co-operative care. I have a small foam target stick i used for my dog, but it's gonna be too small when she's an adult. Guessing i'm gonna have to make one for her, but thought i'd ask!

Yes. It’s in the video about 11:58 www.aestoney.com/category/enrichment-items/ If you want a round target that’s flat you can make your own out of lids or a frisbee. Don’t use foam or any material the snake can catch his teeth on.

I wonder if anyone has tried target training with a jumping spider. They're certainly visual enough, and I'm sure they're smarter than my ball pythons. I should think about designing a foraging exercise for them, they can be puzzle solvers. I definitely plan on starting to target train with my food aggressive ball python. I just need to decide on a target object. I feel like the discs are great for with snakes.

Hi Lori, is it okay to use an orange paddle as a target , or is orange an ill advised color ? Should i glue a blue card to it ? Thank you !

As long as your animal is able to discriminate the target from other things in the environment and it is an easily recognizable cue for that animal it is fine.

@@LoriTorrini Does that mean I would only be able to do one training session a week if using food as reinforcement? (feeding schedule) I don't want to cause too much stress by handling/training while the food is still digesting.
@LoriTorrini

@@golden_ratio Yes. There shouldn’t be any handling when you’re training at first. You’re just pairing the target with food initially and sessions coincide with normal feedings; however, you can divide the meal up to get more than one repetition in per session.
