Here is something completely different, something that has been a passion project of mine for a while. I am delighted to present my own arrangement and interpretation of Tarkus for pipe organ.
Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Tarkus", written in 1971 primarily by keyboardist Keith Emerson, is one of the defining compositions of the prog rock era. At over 20 minutes in length, it spans the full A-side of ELP's second studio album of the same name and features intricate keyboard parts, rapidly fluctuating time signatures, and adequately meaningless vocals. After experimenting with teaching myself parts for the song on piano, I realized that the original instrumentation on Hammond organ and bass translates well to pipe organ. My own arrangement remains largely faithful to the original album version, although I include an original solo in the final Aquatarkus section.
This was performed live at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, IN, on February 4, 2024.
