9:24 No they are acolytes, who have dedicated themselves to protecting the last remaining air-benders, and helping them train the next generation. The only living Air benders are Tenzin, Jinora, Ikki, Meelo and well technically Korra (but hasn't managed to do it yet).

The people that were dressed in the air bender outfits are a group called the air acolytes. It's explained in the comics; they started as a fan club for Aang but Aang then reorganized them as a group to help preserve the Air Nomad culture and help his family as needed. Tenzin's wife Pema was an air acolyte before she married him.

Korra has been living at the Air Temple on Air Temple Island (with Tenzin and his family) since episode 2. They haven't moved to a new place. comparing Aang to Tenzin is a little wild to me. Aang was the youngest ever to become a master and get his tattoos. Tenzin is a master but like Pudgey says, not an avatar. also Titanium isn't something even Toph stood a chance against, as Hiroshi mentioned. it's really hard to use air to push around giant metal mechs and no bender has ever fought them because they never existed before😂. The Gaang had trouble even with one Tai Lee, let alone an army of hundreds 🤣

i think why ppl get confused with the inconsistencies in TLOK is because there’s actually comics right after ATLA where many questions are answered. You guys mentioned it a little bit in the commentary, but yes, many bending techniques, that in the time of Aang were reserved for the best of the best (metalbending because it was literally JUST discovered, and lightning generation because the Fire Nation’s royal elite kept it to themselves) now have been extended to the rest of the population, and in the process have changed a little bit. Especially lightning generation, which now seems much more quick and much less strong than in Aang’s time. While in ATLA, a lightning strike could have easily killed you (like it did Aang), now it just hurts a little bit. My personal theory is simply that they are using two techniques: if you take the time to load, and properly do the movements, like in ATLA, you can get a VERY powerful lightning strike. But if you just do a quick one like Mako does, the power will be much less intense. It also makes sense for Mako! Most of his bending training is based on Pro-Bending, and Pro-Bending is designed to not really hurt the opponents, only to knock them back: this is why earthbenders can only use already-made stone discs, and firebenders can only use quick punches.
@BhBc8f8
Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say "less strong" in Lok, i think Mako's just skilled enough not to kill the dude. Azula in the comics used lighting to knock someone out and Ozai's same quick generated one nearly killed Aang and Zuko, so i think it mainly comes down to skill and intent.

About lighting bending, in aang's time learning lighting bending was strictly available to the royal family. Thats why we see no other characters outside of the fire lord's family actually lighting bend. In korra's time it bacame more "meanstream" One thing you might have noticed is that mako is shooting lighting in a matter of 1 seconds. This indicates his power level which is very strong. If you remember, for azula it takes a few seconds and for her father it takes less. That again, goes to show the power scale

Mako's lightning strikes, while faster, also don't seem to be as strong as what Azula and Ozai were flinging around. Compared to them, Mako has phasers set to stun. There's only a couple times we see Mako go guns blazing at that level.

25:46 Lightning bending hasn't become /as/ much easier and common as I think some peoples impression often is. It's become less of a "royal secret technique" but you're still need to be a really good bender to do it (which Mako is). Combine this with the huge population density increase seeing a couple dozen lightning benders in a power factory isn't actually that much and, notably, Mako was immediately hired. Obviously you'd also see lightning bending in the Triple Threats because its a very useful technique for a criminal enterprise to nurture. In any case, if we look at athletes today, there is a lot of stuff they do that would drop the jaws of Olympians 50 years ago. I never found the jump in bending techniques becoming more widespread all that unbelievable.

The air acolytes were a thing created by Aang. Basically, there were these people he found shortly after ending the war that more or less were an Avatar Aang fan club. He got fairly angry with them after a certain point because he found out that, rather than painting themselves with the blue arrow tattoos, they had actually gone and gotten actual traditional airbender tattoos after mastering the basic airbending forms themselves. He was angry because he saw it as disrespectful to his culture, but long story short, he welcomed them and lots of other people into the air nation as "air acolytes", who essentialy were people who chose to live the lives of air nomads without actually being airbenders. It was something that was meant to be a step towards repairing and rebuilding the air temples, and the air nation.

The fact that everyone and their mother can do lightning now dosn't bother me. It's a theory among the community that it's not like no one was able to do it back then, but perhaps it was outlawed or something to keep it's use just between the royal family. What always bothered me is that they can charge it so fast. That I think would not be explained just by "some years passed and the technique has advanced", as if it's just a matter of figuring out the technique better Azula would have done it... They probably just shoot a lesser shock by charging less, like a taser instead of a real lightning, cause you know, Azula don't play around, she only aims to kill.

There's multiple reasons for Tenzin being less successful in combat than Aang. 1) Airbending is still limited but no longer new. Its been over 50 years since the return of Airbending to the world and so now they have lost the great advantage Aang had, no one knew how to counter and fight against airbending. 2) He hasn't gone all all out. All of the fights he's been in have had some surprise element, or him holding back element to them. 3) The writers wanted to emphasise the danger of these enemies in this season. 4) Aang was a prodigy becoming a master so young by inventing a new airbending technique and he of course had the advantage of being the avatar. Tenzin on the other hand lives in his shadow and is trying to be Aang rather than be himself and that limits his own growth, identity and power. Last but not least, Korra is supposed to be a bit more small scale and realistic. Named benders easily solo'ing entire armies isn't the vibe they wanted to go for. Essentially Korra being a teenager, the evolved world, its all an aspect of the shows creators trying to age it up a little and no longer have that kids show level of power in individuals. Its the same reason this season is all about a nuanced political issue rather than an obvious dictator being wholly bad without any good or salvageable side to him.

Well, not really. Every firebender can learn lighting generation with the right technique and mental state. The reason we think is so hard is because it was dificult to Zuko, but that because he was not in a balanced stated of mind at the time. We never seen him try after that.
@spinoking9168

@@thatsroughbuddy_nah, I think it takes talent. Mako was never able to use it as effectively as Iroh, Azula, or Ozai. If they shot anyone with lighting, they were dead and they could generate it in seconds. Maki never displayed that kind of power with lightning bending, or any other firebender we see in korra for a matter of fact.
@thatsroughbuddy_
Жыл бұрын
@spinoking9168 to be fair, Iroh, Azula, and Ozai trained in times of war, so they had to be deadly. Mako lived in times of peace, so he never needed to train his lighting to kill. We only see him using lighting that episode where he was working, producing energy, and on occasions when he needed to subdue people, not kill. I think if he had training like anyone from the royal family in ATLA, he would be a beast since that from the beginning, he was acknowledged as a very talented firebender
@spinoking9168

@@thatsroughbuddy_ I don’t think so. It was very much implied the being able to produce lighting to kill requires talent and raw power. The situations mako used it on the red lotus, it was a life and fatal situation . He had to reason to hold back so it’s clear he lacks the ability to produce lighting that can kill, he can only produce lighting that temporary subdues people. It is never stated in the show that people need to train with the royal family to be able to learn lighting, it’s very evident by the time LOK comes along thay producing lighting it’s more common knowledge and anyone can learn it. I think Mako just lacked the skill and raw power to actually be able to produce lighting that instantly kills people like Azula, Iroh and Ozai. Yea, Mako is talented but he not on the level of top tier firebenders in the show for sure.

In regards to lin and Tenzin getting taken out in the last episode. Everyone got taken out. They only succeeded after Hiroshi let his gaurd down out of the machine, and they still had to retreat. The thing your missing is that those machines far surpass what aang and his group has faced. The closest comparison is those tanks the firenation had and even those were often a problem for the group and they could only ever beat them with alot of help Edit: The power scaling in this season is consistent, but you only seem to refer to the protagonists scaling and forget about how severly scaled the antagonist are

The people who live and work at Air Temple are Air Acolytes; not Airbenders, but they were started by a group of Aang fangirls after the 100 Year War to keep Air Nomad culture alive after the genocide. They're just people who dedicated their lives to ensuring that Air Nomad culture wouldn't be lost.

Water doesn't actually have an animal associated with it as the first benders like the other 3. The first water bender that the ancient water benders learned from was the moon itself (as Yue explained in Siege of the North part 1, an episode before she herself became the moon).

My guess is that without Fire Nation oppression, earth benders started schools and Toph spread metal bending. Lightning bending became less exclusive because they taught it more openly instead of keeping it for those with status. But blood bending is still a lost technique because of how forbidden it is.

True, specially because he lives in Republic City and if there is any trouble in there, the police is the one to handle things. Maybe Tenzin actually never used his beding to really fight, except in training

2 things it's not fair to compare Tensin to Aang because Aang was an airbending prodigy. Also, I think they are taking out the 2 adults first tovive the kids a chance to shine . But if you notice they took them out with stuff that's specifically designed for benders . I only watched this show once so I'm not sure if Tensin cuts loose later but he is actually very skilled

Besides, Tenzin lived a peaceful life in Republic City, since if there was any trouble, the police would have handled it. So probably, Tenzin never got to use his bending on a real fight before. Except for training, of course, but it's not the same

3:07 I get that Bolin is comedic relief, but I don't have any impulse to compare him to Sokka... Bolin is the complete opposite if you think about it... - Sokka is always sarcastic while Bolin almost can't help but be genuine... - Sokka is skeptical and paranoid while Bolin is gullible people pleaser... he will fall for every ploy in the series... - Sokka is a thinker and Bolin is.... not... Bolin is his own guy...

It's one thing for the Equalists to just roll out chi-blockers en masse and get rolled by people like Lin and Tenzin, and that's exactly why they haven't done that or even made any sort of assault until now: because they were still prepping their tech. They are fully suited to be anti-bender and specifically to counter the biggest threats to their success: Lin and the metalbending police force and Tenzin as an airbending master. So they strike in sneak attack guerilla-style operations to get in and get out and for specific purposes like capturing key figures or displaying Amon's power to rally more support. And the fight in the last episode was again a surprise attack with one of the last technological steps to push the Equalists militarily - the mech suits which Sato even called a "test run" meaning they were still perfecting the design. Now they have the shock gloves to take out the metalbenders in their metal gear and armor (which normally defends against chi-blocker techniques) and to arm the nonbending masses and giant mech suits that are impervious to metalbending even on Toph's level and are giant metal suits meaning they are defended against airbending, on top of the specialized weapons like the nets and bolas that are meant to strike through air blasts...just like the Yu Yan archers did when they captured Aang in the Blue Spirit episode.

The fact Tarlok not only bloodbent Korra, but did it outside of the limitation of a full moon, is pretty wild. How's that for power scaling? 😜
@baileyross8279

Air temple island IS where Korra has been living and training. Tenzin and his family live there permanently along with dozens of air acolytes. The acolytes are not air benders, but people who have chosen to dedicate themselves to living as air nomads did. There were plenty of air nomads back when that weren't benders. They live a life of peace and service, seeking spiritual enlightenment.
