Tartar Sauce University 101: How to Make a Simple and Delicious Recipe from Scratch

Like it or leave it describes how many people feel about tartar sauce. In his series, Fifty Ways to Love a Catfish, John Woods shares his simple homemade Southern tartar sauce recipe that is absolutely delicious.
Equipment Needed:
• Measuring cup
• Measuring spoon
• Cutting board and knife to dice onion
• Kitchen spoon or spatula
• medium-size mixing bowl
• Bowl for the finished sauce
The Main Ingredients:
• 2 cups of your favorite mayonnaise (I like Duke’s)
• 1/2 cup (or to taste) of finely chopped onions (Sweet, Vidalia, Yellow preferred)
• ¼ cup (or to taste) of sweet pickle relish or dill relish (your preference)
Optional Ingredients - Add these if you want.
• Salt and pepper to taste. Lawry’s season salt is a good addition.
• 2 teaspoons of white granulated sugar
. A squeeze of lemon.
Assembly:
• Mix all of the ingredients together. Refrigerate for up to 5 days. Do not freeze. Without the onions, you can refrigerate for up to several weeks.
Bonus Notes:
• Experiment with the measurements to create your own recipe.
• We often delete the relish and add jalapenos for a great dipping sauce for roasted potatoes or as a different version of tartar sauce.
• If you do not have relish, chop the dill or any other pickle in your refrigerator.
