Yes, Jane is a bit of a damsel in distress, but I think what separates her from the typical damsel in distress is how likeable she is. She's passionate about learning, she's a talented artist, and she's played hilariously by Minnie Driver (who actually ad-libbed the monkeys monologue), so you actually CARE if she's in trouble.
@khululyp
7 ай бұрын
Her distress is also warented as she is a city girl from high class, not used to the perils of the jungle and her aloof nature gets her into trouble.
@00ammy00
7 ай бұрын
Plus she doesn't STAY a damsel throughout the whole movie, you can see her start to adapt and use the things she learns from Tarzan to help herself, like when she grabbed and swung on a vine to save Kala. So it's totally believable that she's able to live comfortably in the jungle with Tarzan in the TV show. Basically just everything about her is great, she's honestly one of my favorite Disney heroines.

Here’s the thing about the Phil Collins music. I never got the sense it was telling you how to feel as much as just moving the plot along while the energetic rock honestly fit the wild jungle vibe more than you give it credit for here. When you listen to something like David Wise’s score for Donkey Kong Country, also a 90s Jungle soundtrack and at least partially inspired by Collins’ music,(The sequel even has a song that starts with the percussion of “In the Air Tonight”) it suddenly makes a lot more sense atmospherically to go with this artist. Rock is wild and energetic, and the mix of that with hard percussion really sells that you’re in an environment that can be tough, dangerous, but also freeing and even enchanting.

@@legionaireb- True, yes, but she isn't shown being hit by the rock or eaten by the vultures. But if you pause this movie at the right moment, you'll see the silhouette of Clayton hanging in the vines when the lightning strikes. That's quite intense for a G rated movie. Nowadays this movie would probably be rated PG, because it's quite violent. And there are brief images of blood when Kala finds Tarzan. Fun fact: The very first animated Disney movie to receive a PG rating was The Black Cauldron. Pretty much every animated Disney film after that (up until the year 2000 when Dinosaur was released) was rated G. Dinosaur was the second animated Disney movie to get a PG rating. Nowadays it seems very rare for animated Disney movies to be rated G.

@@legionaireb Yeah, but when Snow White came out, movies like that weren’t seen as just for children. When Disney started to get the reputation of being family friendly, they toned back a lot of that darkness by a ton. Especially in the 90s, when parent groups would go apeshit on any sort of thing that offended their sensibilities. Disney taking a risk and showcasing harsh death scenes like that was ballsy, considering their environment. In defense of the Phil Collins songs: the style feels disconnected, but the lyrics are definitely not. I really liked them, I felt that the lyrics complemented the scenes appropriately. The lyrics are so specific that the songs don't work as standalone pop hits: "You'll be in my heart" barely did it... it is so descriptive of the parent/child situation (uncommon in pop) that its use in other contexts sounds forced.

The disconnect of the songs actually plays well with the visuals. Much like Starlight Brigade, the lyrics _can_ fade into the background without loosing anything, but they also compliment the story being told. You get the best of both worlds and can focus on whichever you enjoy more at the time. Average lifespan of a leopard is 12-17 years with the oldest pushing early 20s. So no. That is definitely not the leopard that ate/killed his parents. That "sequel" is just 3 episodes from the animated series that came from this film. It was a lot of fun and explored a variety of topics from ethics to the benefits and dangers of technology. Heck, there was even some crazy magic sorceress at one point.

It was one of the first Disney movies I ever saw in theaters (I was nearly 5 when the movie came out), and the music was what struck me the most, especially "You'll Be in My Heart". Brother Bear amplified that. When I was a teen, I started hearing more of Phil's solo stuff and his Genesis era stuff. My one regret is that I couldn't afford to see him perform live before he retired. Hope he's happy and doing well. On a side note, as a long time watcher of Doug/the Critic, I'm extremely happy to see all the positive love for Phil in the comments. Glad to know I'm not alone! While the “sequel “ goes into more detail about Tarzan’s childhood identity emo-ness, the tie in cartoon series gets to explore the characters and their relationships more, even introducing some great stand alone and recurring characters. It’s worth checking out if you wanted more exploration into the world they created.

Still one of my favorite Disney movies, and one of my favorite films in general. The animation is amazing, the characters fun, the music insane, and to this day, I have yet to see another Tarzan film that holds a candle to it. Disney's Tarzan is, in my opinion, a perfect film.

Clayton is voiced by Brian Blessed, who pretty much is one of the most badass people to ever live. Listen to his story about how he got an orangutan to captain a boat by doing his Boss Nass sounds and there are a ton of other awesome things he did too.

Phil Collins went really hard on the soundtrack (as well as he did on Brother Bear), most of the orchestral score was also done with Phil and Mark Mancina. According to his autobiography, Phil didn't want to sing the songs either and it was a director's decision to have him included in the onscreen soundtrack for the reason you gave. Lion King had the exact same going on, with some exception. Circle of Life, Can You Feel the Love Tonight aren't sung by the characters either and nobody bats an eye. It was just trendy to bash on Phil Collins at the time. Circle of Life was still a hit on the charts when Elton sang it. I'm not sure why they couldn't do the same for Tarzan. They're mostly bangers, except Trashin' the Camp.

So maybe I was an unobservant child, or my eyes couldn't distinguish colors, but my siblings and i didn't see that hanging shadow for years! We got the vine snapping, and thought that was it😅
@gothicMCRgirl

It’s possible you and your siblings may have gotten the censored version of the scene. My DVD of Tarzan had that scene edited where you couldn’t see the shadow at all (though I still knew what happened since they showed Clayton screaming and clutching the vines on his neck as he fell).

Phil Collins sang the songs in 5 different languages, one of them being german. To be honest, he did an impressive job. I love these songs so much and sing them to this day in his american accent. 😄

Always thought this was an underrated DRen film, and actually put it up there with the best of them. My only problem with it is really Rosie O Donnell. I think it was time to move away from traditional musicals, and the montages really worked for me. The animation is top notch. The opening and jaguar battle are amazing. Emotional moments are very well done. I actually think Jane has tons of personality, and is my favorite Disney supporting significant other (Beast doesn’t count). Even the villain is fine, especially given the hero had so much going on he didn’t need that direct an antagonist. I’d put this leagues above Mulan, Herc, Hunchback and Pocahontas, though all of them are good in their own ways.

I liked the songs that Phil Collins did for this movie, but I definitely agree that there were some scenes that would have been served much better with a dramatic score. I also was not the biggest fan of Turk in most of the scenes...... The only exception really is "trashing the camp". I still absolutely love that scene. It gives us a break from the drama and is a lot of fun.

I think we should see Tarzan not as a musical, but more as an action movie with a lot of 80s montages. And that's why Phil Collins' songs work here. You don't see Daniel Larusso sing "You're The Best Around" nor Rocky Balboa sing "Hearts on Fire". But the songs works because they are montage songs.

8:09 While I'm not a big fan of the Phil Collin's songs since they seem just inserted in there , I will say that I think two of them fit pretty well with where they put them. Son of man, and Strangers Like Me.

I was stuck between liking the Collins songs in the movie and wishing they hadn’t been there. I loved Son of Man though. And the animation during the montage especially is awesome. Speaking of the leopard eye transition, a lot of cool transitions were in that sequence too. Maybe most of the songs could’ve only been on the soundtrack or something, not in the movie. I did grow up with this Tarzan movie though and watched it a lot. Never saw Clayton’s shadow at the end though. Missed it every time until it was pointed out in a Disney Brutal Deaths list.

What they could've done with Clayton was make his relationship to Tarzan a plot point. They're clearly intended to be related. It's no coincidence that Clayton has both Tarzan's last name AND his jawline. They should've had Clayton discover that Tarzan is the child of his lost uncle or whatever, then use that to try and manipulate Tarzan by splitting his loyalty. Blood family vs. found family.
