I compare the Tascam m30 (Tascam 388/246 Preamps) to the Warm Audio Tone Beast Preamp. This Tascam was $75, and the tonebeast is $600 new! Tascam vintage analog boards are all over craigslist, and they are cheap, but portastudio tape and cassette machines like Tascam 388's (and tascam 246s) are going up in value like crazy. At the time of writing this, I can't even find any 388s for sale. But all of these boards have pretty much the same preamps.

So why pay like $2k for a tascam 388 when you could get an m30, or m35, or one of the other tascams, and hook it up to a nice reel to reel? Depending on the reel to reel, and the type of dolby noise reduction, you might get a better sound for a fraction of the cost. I know that 388 look awesome, and it has a particular sound (which I love), but is overpriced right now.

I found this tascam m30 mixer for $75 on craigstlist, I had no idea what the condition would be, and I figured it was worth the gamble. I'm building a recording studio in this barn using only reclaimed items, so I thought this basically fit the bill and I decided to give her a shot. Portastudios like the tascam 246 and tascam 388 were used by artists like elliott smith and mac demarco, and that analog sound is a combination of the cassette tape and the circuits in those 4 tracks. I have a tascam 414, but using it has always been a pain in the ass, as I'm so used to editing in my DAW. So to me, this m30 is the best of both worlds, as it gives you half of that low fi sound from the board.
I have a warm audio tonebeast preamp, which I love and I use it for work all the time. The tone beast sounds fuller and rounder than my clarrett preamps, so I typically use it for recording acoustic guitars and electric guitars. I used this as a point of reference to compare the pre's in the tascam m30.
So in conclusion, after listening closely on my monitors and on iphones and computer speakers, I can hear that m30 definitely has more hiss. For the type of work I do, where I need to deliver tracks that sound high quality, but not sterile and cold, I can't really use the m30 too often. I know there are modifcations you can do to improve the quality of the m30, but at the moment it isn't worth it to me. For my own stuff, or when a vintage sound is called for, I would definitely prefer to use the m30. It has more presence, a thinner low end, more clarity in the lows and low mids, and it's just fun to use. The tonebeast is more subtle, it's full, slightly dull, but it's not noisy, low hiss, and good for delivering guitar sessions to clients. Also the m30 doesn't have phantom power obviously, so I simply can't use it for everything. I hope to do more experiments with it.
One thing to keep in mind is that when you start to stack lots and lots of tracks, you get build up of certain frequencies. Especially if you use the same preamp, same mic, same sound source, over and over. So hiss on this tascam times 20 tracks might sound really really noisey.
The tascam has 6 pre's in it. Some dude in my random small town was selling a tascam m35 for 100. That one has 8 pres. The tonebeast only is 1 pre. With a bunch of buttons that to my ears, hardly to do anything. At least the tascams have eqs built into them right?
Do you hear the difference? Which one do you like best?
