Your comment makes perfect sense. Need separate monitor, line and USB submix option.

Thing is, I really want to like the Mixcast 4 - but I sincerely wonder about Tascam's commitment to firmware updates. I think the hardware itself is compelling for me anyway. But it's long term vision that worries me.

here is a workaround (with lots of caveats but still, maybe it works for somone´s requirements). If you turn solo mode to pre-fader you can have the fader of the mic down so it does not get to the monitor out, but if you solo it now it will be audible on the headphones (at unity gain). So when the solo mode is set to pre fader AND the channel is set to solo, the faders control the volume of the signal at the monitor out. if the fader is down, it wont go out to the monitor output. It does however get to the phones outputs but you don´t have control over its level anymore, it gets through at unity gain of the channel - you would have to make adjustments for example with the compresors makeup gain of the channel you want to adjust. Second caveat: the volume of the pads will be very loud on the headphones if you want to have them in the phones as well (by activating solo).

Hi, I have Firmware version 1.21 0137 When I go into “Hardware Settings>Audio” and disable/turn off “Feedback Prevention”, I am able to have my mic and pads, etc sound come through on my monitor all at the same time. I’m using my little “Line out” port on the back. I haven’t tried the reg. L/R Monitor Out ports. I think it should work too. I can control the volume level with my “Monitor Out” knob. Hope this helps.

So the volume knob controls the "Line Out" level too..? I thought that was like a "Master Out", and then "Monitor Out" was controlled by the volume knob! There goes my intended use of this device (as an ordinary "radio mixer" with analog audio out to the transmitter.)

Considering this came out before all the new Rode 2 mixers (with routing options galore). How does the Mixcast's competition, the o.g. Rodecaster, solve this issue? Does it?

From Rode's web page - for the old Rodecaster Pro (same feature in newer models): ----- There are two additional settings for the monitor outputs, accessed by going to: 'Settings' > 'Advanced' > 'Audio' > 'Operations'. Automatically Mute Outputs - This handy feature will automatically mute the output whenever a channel slider is turned up, ensuring you don't experience feedback while using monitors. ----- So yes, Rode thought of this VERY obvious feature!

It is really, really stupid by Tascam to forget/ignore/down-prioritize such a basic feature! Also - question to Mixcast 4 owners out there... Can the "Line Out" work as a true master output from the mixer? Not affected by monitor volumes etc..? The manual says something about a "Line Out" setting - that resets itself at boot-up..?! I would like a modern digital mixer to use for ordinary radio broadcasting needs - so I need an analog line-level "Master Out" from the mixer to send to my transmitter. It seems most/all of these podcast mixers (Rodecaster etc.) only provides the master output via USB to a computer. I got my hopes up when I saw "Line Out" on the Mixcast 4, but I fear it's not what I'm looking for... :(

Why can't we have an all-in-one solution with the signal routing flexibility of a Mackie VLZ series? Give the people what they want!

I was told by Tascam to set feedback prevention, and it will work.

According to this video, "feedback prevention" is just a fancy digital way of turning off the monitors or turning down the volume... Why do I need a menu setting for that?!

I think Tascam has given up on the Mixcast 4. No firmware updates since September 2023? Yeah.
