Had mine about 2 months.. my first proper mixer. I love it.. no more recabling into a small interface , and it works just as well with or without my computer.. I love that you can start things off without a computer, and then finish off and mixdown linked if you want. I also love that you can switch between computer or live monitoring per track... No more latency issues getting guitar tracks down on big projects... A few things I'd change for sure but overall a game changer for me

Nice to see the unit being used as a sketchpad - mine should be with me in two or three days. Tascam really seems to have hit a sweet spot with this machine, as it has MIDI sync, which no one else seems to do now. Also, the ability to merge it with the DAW, record onto the machine and DAW at the same time is genius. So many great features for the money; mixer surface (basic, but hey!), sockets at the back (thank god), power-switch, descent metering, compressor (basic, but nice) and EQ, a built in effect to help provide 'glue' and an auxy send. It's all good... for sure another 300 bucks would have provided more of everything, but this price point is brilliant. I have a large studio, but will be using this for DAW-less jam sessions, with the ability to move stuff to the computer for sweetening if required. Good job on the video. Good job Tascam.

Recording hint, when you are ever playing like to pratice you should always let it record. Many popular 70s bands did that and ended up with their best track being the pratice track. Some recording software like cakewalk or logic allow you to record multiple tracks on the same strip . Then before mixing pick the best sounding one, delete the rest.

Read the Manual. It says "When a MODE switch is set to “MTR”, the signal from the input jack on that channel will be recorded. This function is useful when recording and playing back repeatedly because the monitored sound is automatically switched according to the recording or playback status." What the means is leave it on MTR.

Thanks for this,much appreciated.Nice to see a step by step video.I got my model 12 yesterday. It’s early days for this unit,so few videos available . Just read a lot of the comments ,as I am looking into how the model 12 can synchronise with other hardware.Specifically DAWs[I use Ableton Live 10] and other multi tracks.(eg I ve got an old Roland cd2000).From the manual it’s seems you can only configure in your system with Model 12 being set as a Midi Clock master,meaning that connected devices like DAws need to have synchronisation set through external mode configuration.Interestingly it seems thar the Model 12 can be set to be the DAW audio interface,with a virtual midi connection for the Synchronization. Overall I think the model 12 is an inspirational piece of kit.Hopefully it can support some of these hybrid modes.

Thanks, Leafsmith. You're going to have a blast. I need to look more into the MIDI functionality. I'm very much a novice at that sort of stuff so it should be a great learning experience. It seems like you can also connect the Model 12 as a DAW controller and also like you said an interface. I agree, it's super inspirational and solves a lot of connectivity issues for me. Cheers and thanks for watching!

I’ve been considering what I should do, like perhaps sell my Yamaha and invest in a nicer interface, but Im loving the portability and flexibility of these things. I could still record on tape and then bounce it to the Model 12 for further mixing / tracking and better yet, I can take it to rehearsals and sessions, just like my 414! I’ve been comparing this and the Zoom multitrack recorders, but I like how this has on board EQ and effects returns. @BIGLARRY100
2 жыл бұрын
Nothing, you're doing it right. Live let's you practice but not record on tht track while recording other tracks since it needs record armed to hear in MTR. Probably a pretty rare need tbh. But say for example you want to record a singer on track 1 while you play a keyboard on tracks 3/4 but for some reason you only want to hear the keyboard & not record it but you DO want the singer recorded. Then you'd need 3/4 switched to Live so you could hear the keys w/o needing to arm record since you're hitting record to grab the singer, lol. Hopefully that makes sense, haha. The only other benefit of using Live in your case would be because the blinking light annoys you when record is armed. So in home studio use your missing nothing (besides the undoubtedly rare example above.) Where Live would be more useful & likely got it's name is in a "Live" setting where you'd want everything in a band heard on all the tracks/channels during a show but the sound man probably doesn't want to arm the record button on every track. So if it's for a band/live artist using it as mainly as a mixer more so than a recorder. Even if a band wanted to get rowdy & record said live performance they'd just arm record & leave it in Live & wahh-lahh. Rmbr the Model 12 is 3 things Mixer, Recorder, & USB DAW Interface Controller. Therefore, you will have buttons, features, & settings that aren't really relevant to the mode you choose to use it for. If that's TL/DR than I'm saying you're good, have fun, & what you're doing is working fine. No need to learn how to fix a method you got that ain't broke.

Hi just seen your excellent demo on recording with Tascam, I'm caught between a rock and a hard place right now, deciding on which mixer to go with mainly used for live performances but also dabble with home recording, I gave the presonus Ar16c waiting to either be opened up or sent back, hearing bad reviews on this board, Then I see the Zoom Live trak L20, don't like the idea of the power supply set up, but it has 2 effects engines, Tascam I have to admit after watching your video now is top of my list, but this only has one effect engine to work with, I always liked the idea of 2 effects to mix with like on my Dynacord Cms 1000 desk, But if I knew that what you get with tascam effects are excellent then Tascam Model 24 will replace this Presonus ar16c live studio, which as u said is not even opened the parcel yet, Would love to read what you and your band thought of Tascam, 🤔 thanks in advance

The DAW on the 24 was basically Abelton free. Ya get 2 tracks. With the 12, you have a DAW control. I'm going to do a bit more research on the 12, but i ended up throwing away almost enough $ to buy a 12.

Dang that's a tough break, Todd. I've been wanting to make a video that would serve as a "buyer's guide". There seems like there is a lot of misinformation swirling around out there about the units and what they are capable of: a lot of people I have come across are staying away from the 12 because they say it is not an analog mixer like the 16/24 and can't multitrack like those models do. My understanding is that they are all basically the same, but the 12 has DAW integration and can be used as a controller while having less inputs and busses. I guess they are aimed at different audiences but it is odd to style them all the same if they don't all have the same functionality

@@424Recording Yeah, I know someone who got the 12, as it would be best for us, as we're drummers. 8 XLR's are plenty to record a great sounding drum track. Will the $ I got back from the 24, I planned on getting the 12, and the new Studio One, although something like Cakewalk would be fine. Now I'm reading a bunch of reviews about how difficult it is to use, latency problems, popping sounds.......I love the idea, but I don't think they worked out the kinks before releasing? I have the Focusrite 18i20, and although i love the idea of turning the compression, and watching it on my monitor, I've lost trust in Tascam. Even before Covid, I couldn't get any phone support. Before I make the transfer to the Focusrite, I'll start looking around to see if something else can do what the 12 promises. If something does exist, I'm sure it will be at a much higher price

Oh btw, could you record a quick video explaining levels of audio signal? I honestly can’t wrap my head around it. Should I set my instruments to be as loud as possible and then control the volume in the mixer? @424Recording
4 жыл бұрын
Can you record the input when in MTR mode though, re: switching between Live and MTR? Yeah, I ran into some gain staging issues when I was doing this as well. The unit uses that guideline on the live input screen for the designated level. The thing that confuses me about the unit is the main output meter; it goes way above 0 to 15 and then OL (overload I'm assuming). Also, this unit gets LOUD. I can barely turn it up when I'm listening back. In general, it's usually best to have the loudest signal needed coming into the inputs to get close to that -12 guideline and using the gain knob to bump it up if needed. In the next video, I probably should have used a preamp for my vocals. The fader is more of the volume control. Play a signal thru one of the inputs and watch the live input screen. Keep the fader down. You'll still see the level coming thru just as hot but you won't hear it. Hope that makes sense!

Update, I just bought a Teac 3 and am going to set up my gear as follows: mic into channel 1 on the Teac, monitor outs from Teac into my Warm 73 pre amp EQ, to ART Compressor, to my Tascam 12. Tascam 12 AUX out to cassette in, cassette out to channel 3 of the Tascam 12. This way it's being used to record playback from the DAW which would already be holding analog recorded sounds from all of my outboard gear.

If you want to grab a Model 12 through my site, that would help out a lot! If not, no worries. Happy recording and I hope this information is helpful! 424recording.com/tascam-model-12

Is it possible to record effects like delay on a vocal? I have an external effects loop set up on Aux 1 but it doesn't record. I think I'll try an insert. Probably the only way I'll be able to record with the vocal affect audible on playback. Any other thoughts as to how I can route this?

Great tutorial. Had two questions: you can do both the multitracking on this as well as mastering to a stereo track, with the option to use effects (onboard or otherwise) at any stage? Second, say you wanted to loop something and record that, could you do it straight on the machine or would you have to connect an external looper and use it as an effect (if that's even possible)?
@BIGLARRY100

You can mix down to single stereo file to the SD Card & put that on a computer, phone, etc on the Model series. It plays like any other song you download. It however has no mastering fx like the Tascam DP-32SD & DP-24SD. It's a marginal difference imo. On the Model 12, 16, etc you end up w/ a fully mixed stereo file on SD card & on the DP series you end up with a fully mixed stereo file on an SD card that has some Tascam mastering fx slapped on top of that. While It'd be cool if the Model series gave you some fx to polish the stereo mixdown they wouldn't be pro-level anyway. You may even be better off without it & mastering the untouched mix elsewhere tbh. Tascam prob knows that & that's likely the logic. The Model series is meant to be more pro-level than the DP series. The lowest Model series starts in price where the highest DP series ends. As for looping there is something called Vamp now in the settings that let's you practice by looping. Tascam added it in a firmware update. It's likely not what you want but I obviously don't know you. I'd watch a video on it. Just search "Tascam Model Vamp." It basically loops a section of the recorded tracks endlessly (to my basic understanding anyway) allowing you to practice or free style play on top of the loop. I don't think it would be serviceable to replace a looper if you want to play a riff, loop it, & record the loop to a track while recording something else on another track. I have many other tools to loop w/ so I've not cared to explore it. Hope that helps man & there is a YT vid I watched on the Vamp feature so check it out.

Hi, I'm probably not alone in looking for the as yet unreleased ultimate stand alone digital recorder mixer without the need for using a computer or DAW option and the Tascam Model 12 looks very close indeed. On the older Tascam cassette multi trackers some models allowed the input of external effect pedals for mixing on the fly. I've been using the Zoom R8 to record live instruments including drums and mix up to 8 tracks on an internal master channel, but very tricky to mix on the fly using the internal reverbs and echoes (layered in banks) and virtually impossible to use outboard effect pedals attempted on master mixing or on a single individual track using some headphone output to effect, returning and assigning to track trickery. But it's great to be able to use any internal effect on any track while recording or mixing. So with the Tascam Model 12 is it possible to record with different internal effects on different tracks (so that the chosen effect is NOT global on all tracks- like it is on the Zoom L-12 for instance) and be able to mix tracks to master track on the fly? Also is it possible to use external/outboard effects from guitar pedals to mix onto any track or master on the fly? If so how many inserts/ aux sends are possible at one time? Can they be used in conjunction with the internal effects? Really appreciate if you could investigate my queries and share your findings as I'm so close to considering a Tascam Model 12 purchase. Many Thanks
@424Recording
4 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the effects are global. You can record them to a track and then move on to another effect for another track but you'll have to commit to your sounds (like 4-track recording) as you go. I believe there is two inserts. I'm not sure if they can be used in conjunction. I'm hoping to do a video on the effects soon. Cheers and happy recording!

Great tutorial! Two questions though.. 1) how does (direct) monitoring work while recording 4 or more tracks simultaneously for each musician? And can I use plugins while recording? So for instance if I wanted to use a guitar amp plugin like Amplitube to record my guitar, or put a delay or reverb plugin on my vocals while recording? 2) If the mixer needs 2 channels for Logic, then that is my master in Logic? So I'd be losing 2 channels and have 8 actual channels left, correct? Thanks!

You mentioned not having to use the "instrument" button because you're running through a preamp. Would this mean that if you have an active bass (9v preamp) you would not need to press that button? Would using that button with a preamp just make it way loud or would it cause damage?

I'm looking at this vs the DP_32SD. The Model 12 certainly wins on looks and vibe. Talk to me man. Lead me through these murky depths. I'm an old school Tascam boy. Been trying DAWs, plug-ins, etc for years. All have utterly failed to inspire. I have no interest in being a computer tech. Only in immediacy of tracking ideas. Computers are ruining my life/music. Help.

Idk if you've ever used a 424, but that's a big part of my recording background, and I feel like the Model 12 is the spiritual successor to the 424 mkiii. I guess the big question to ask yourself is how many tracks do you want to record? Would having an analog mixer also be important to you? Do you want to hook up a lot of instruments/synths/drum machines, etc.? If you like the mixer workflow, you can look into the larger models, like the Model 16 and 24. In the box, the DP-32 looks like it has more features, post production, and more tracks. The Model series is going to be an older style workflow, more based on your ears and the sounds you get in your studio before you record than your eyes and manipulating sounds with plugins in post. That's my two cents. I've also got some other thoughts on my website geared more toward 4-track users if you're interested: 424recording.com/tascam-model-12 Good luck, Andy!

@@424Recording I really appreciate your reply! I typically build songs with a couple acoustic guitars, bass and live drums. Then just Microkorg or other synths, etc. I double-track vocals. Very basic formula I tend to like. 12 tracks seem right for my needs. I miss that limitation, and having to make choices ahead of time, to end up where I hear things in my head. Like how we always had to bounce on cassette. I miss the limitations in a lot of ways. Dude, the 424 was my sole obsession for most of my life. I judge/compare everything against it. It has a magic sound. Regarding your point on post, etc...agreed. I make almost every decision before tracking. And effects-wise, I much prefer simple things like double-tracking and subtle delay/time effects. I like the starkness of less effects. So again, I'm probably laughable simple in my technique, but it's all geared toward serving the song. Not the other way around, ya know? I think I might buy a 12 right now. I'm gonna just hold off and hope you reply first. Just in case. Really appreciate you! also intunepiano@gmail.com no need but there's my email.

I went with the Model 12 over the Zoom because it has MIDI for syncing my external synths for live jamming. I also like the dedicated buttons for each channel, main EQ section (great for live performance), compressor on each channel, a sub out, and I love teh 2 headphone outs. The Zoom seems more for podcasters in my opinion or if you don't need MIDI. I used to have a Zoom R16. It was fantastic and so easy to work with but I sold it because it didn't have MIDI.

Hi Pablo, everything you record is saved to each track. So you can export a stereo wav or the entire session as 12 separate tracks if you want. The Model 12 uses an SD card. In my experience, recording on the Model 12 is exactly like recording to a 4-track, but with an SD card in place of the cassette. Any recording where you'd be using a mixer to record to a recording format, to me it feels like the same workflow as that. Cheers and thanks for watching. I hope this helps and happy recording!
