This is very good and in the line of what I think. I keep going back to the ”pretend” in ”pretentious - something that inflates its own importance or significance. British sparkling wine which also aids biodiversity? Not pretentious. Grapes which take an insane amount of work to grow and which are exceptional for it? Not pretentious. Ginger which claims it’ll lower your anxiety levels and purify your aura? Pretentious as hell.
@TristanLane520
Күн бұрын
@@PetWessman Pretentious fruit is when people pay more for imperceivably different produce, paying more because someone has tickled the apples with gold or only used ethically friendly peace manure to spray over the potatoes or whatever. Paying £2 per grape because it is simply the best tasting grape you've ever had isn't "pretentious" at all, it is arguably disgustingly vulgar display of wealth when that price per grape is what about 3% of even the UK's population has to live on for dinner tonight. But I'm not a Socialist so I'm not going to judge anyone for buying grapes they can afford. It costs that much more because of market demand, because clearly it is worth that much more to people who really like eating grapes, they aren't charging extra because they wrote a load of waffle on the back of the packet, they're charging that much because year after year they put hours into actually determining scientifically the exact amount of moisture and sunlight a grape needs and ensuring that whatever the weather actually is it gets that amount and not more or less. British sparkling wine would be pretentious if all it did was prattle on about "bio-diversity" as if protecting a flower or two makes the world a better place and justifies costing twice as much, the reason it isn't pretentious is that due to global warming the actual temperatures, amount of rainfall, etc that made the "Champagne region" so good for growing wine in the 1700s when it got famous for it, have actually moved North, because the "too cold, too wet" UK has got drier and hotter as the planet has got warmer, and the "just right" Champagne region has therefore got "too hot too dry" The only reason the British wines don't continue to win more awards is because of how massively corrupt the French wine awards are, because they have a massive interest to protect their own domestic industry, so they go on with the anti-scientific "terroir" bollocks rather than the meteorology and agronomy and bio-chemistry that is backed by empirical study and historical records.

I'm so pleased that Barry and family have adopted a robot mower. We have had one in our family for a couple of years and we love her. She has a plastic dog kennel in the back yard and my wife goes out to play with her every few days (we don't have her set to auto run; the back yard turns into a marsh if it rains and we don't want her to unexpectedly drown.) Her name, incidentally, is Rover, but not because she's in any way a dog or because she roves the yard. She was actually named after the weapon in The Prisoner.

I don't drink gin and am not fond of bacon (weird, I know). But I couldn't help but get excited to learn that Emma Wright made the wine. My grandfather was born in Blackpool and immigrated to the U.S. but his oldest daughter, my mom was Emma Wright. I wonder if we are related? The grapes remind me of King grapes from South Korea.

I'm glad the boys are starting to realize that food unless trying to impress people BECAUSE OF ITS COST most food is not pretentious because its just good food and sometimes its very good or unique. Preserving old methods or using rare varieties or requiring more effort to grow/process does not pretentious make it just means theres someone out there that knows and tries just a bit harder than others to provide something special.

1 - Having seen something recently, I'm curious if we're going to get a few more "outside the studio" episodes. 2 - Yes we need an episode at Jamie's house, and Mike's, and Ben's flat, and Kush's place. 3 - Pretentious to me is "I'm going to buy this to impress people with the rarity/price/whatever" so those grapes are, the rest aren't, even the fully custom wine as that's a gift not a "look at me" thing. 4 - Can't wait to see what the thing I saw that led to #1 is unveiled.

4:55 why not allow fishermen to harvest that invasive species? In Florida they are spearing, and cooking Lion fish, which are destroying the ecosystem. This sounds like a poorly considered law…or there is someone or something behind the strange logic.

It might be so to river pollution which they may absorb at higher rates. They don't serve up zebra mussels in the US for that reason.

If it's something like that, Sorted should be presenting that information. And at that point, they usually aren't called invasive. Non-native or naturalized@@randomassortmentofthings

It’s only the American signal crayfish that’s invasive, and it’s difficult to distinguish it from the native species. Hence the need for a special license from the Environment Agency, to ensure the protection of the native one which is under threat from the invader.

Pretentiousness level: Japanese fruits. I've seen a video once about the Japanese exquisite fruits - it's the separate world: farms, auctions and special shops where you buy these fruits as a gift or even a reward. It's like a sport that went from casual to professional - think professional golf or equestrian sports - different expectations and definitely different price level than your casual fruit market.
