About a week ago, I also made the questionable decision to try (and then spit out) a Dracaena which was possibly a D. fragrans. The berry was orange and similarly had a slightly tomato-like flavor, but was considerably sweeter. I enjoyed that, and there wasn't even a hint of bitterness to the taste, though it smelled a little like it should be. It was fairly mucilaginous-about on par with okra. It tasted so good, honestly, that I assumed it must be poisonous or else I'd have seen more reports of it being eaten!

The Podo tree might be or looks very similar to some trees that are popular in California, they have the same resin-y berries with those bumpy pits inside, and very similar looking leaves.

We had a Dracaena fragrans flower and fruit in the shop where I work. Looking it up I could similar inconclusive information. The fruit was almost entirely seed. With a minuscule amount of sweet peanut butter scented pulp between the seed and skin. It tasted okay, sweet, no tartness at all, and with that peanut butter scent. I came to the conclusion that even if it wasn’t harmful, it just didn’t have enough pulp to be worth bothering with.

Actually since Podocarpus is a type of conifer they don't make fruit. The fleshy part on the outside is called an aril or a fleshy seed coat. Taxus also has these but that one doesn't cover the entire seed

The fruit of _Dracaena ombet_ are eaten in Saudi Arabia. Edited to add, the fruit seem developed for birds to eat. This is the probable reason for the spread of dracaenas that seem closely related but are distantly located.

@@-jank-willson yes, but that's not the same as having no taste buds. Hell, spiciness doesn't even have to do with taste buds as it's more like stimulating the pain receptors on your tongue (birds aren't affected by that). It is true birds have a very reduced sense of taste, but it is still very much present

There are these bush near me, that grow everywhere. They have red, and orange berries. I've assumed they were honeysuckles, but I just checked. Nope, something else. Eitherway, Honeysuckle is mildly poisoinious to humans, as I assume whatever the berries near are too. . I know the birds will eat them, but thinking about it, I don't think they like them much. I have a cherry tree, and the birds go nuts eating them. They don't seem to have the same gusto for the other berries.
