🏆 Tattoo-Friendly Hot Springs in Hakone: Top Rankings
While many public baths (sento) in Japan are tattoo-friendly, but only few of them use natural hot spring water. For a truly authentic experience, nothing beats soaking in natural hot spring waters. However, most hot spring facilities in Japan have strict no-tattoo policies, regardless of your profession. Even lawyers and members of parliament are not exempt from this rule if they have tattoos.
But here’s some good news for you! 🎉 In Hakone Onsen Village, the nearest hot spring town to Tokyo, there are tattoo-friendly "day-use hot springs" with natural, free-flowing, non-recycled, and non-chlorinated waters. Here are the top rankings by the Onsen Harvest staff:
🥇 1st Place: Tenzan / Ikkyu (Day-Use Facility)
This is my personal favorite. The purity of the hot spring (directly sourced) and the owner’s dedication to the quality of the water are outstanding. The facility is directly connected via pipelines to seven hot spring sources on or near the premises, allowing the water to flow directly into the baths without storage. An innovative cooling system that doesn’t require adding cold water ensures the perfect temperature. You can also enjoy fantastic cuisine, including shabu-shabu made with hot spring water. 🍲
・Water Volume: 20,820 liters per hour
・Water Quality: 1) Alkaline simple spring, 2) Sodium chloride spring
・Fee: ¥1,450
・Note: No heating, circulation, or disinfection
🥈 2nd Place: Mineryo (Day-Use Facility, Private Baths)
This hidden gem offers an exclusive open-air hot spring that can be reserved by the hour. The high-temperature sodium chloride spring naturally wells up from the bottom of Jakotsugawa Valley near the Mineryo facility. Known for its premium quality, this hot spring delights even the most discerning onsen enthusiasts. It’s a completely private bath, so you won’t encounter other guests. Enjoy the natural bamboo surroundings alone or with your spouse or family. 🎋
・Water Quality: Sodium chloride spring
・Fee: ¥1,500 per hour
・Note: No heating, circulation, or disinfection
🥉 3rd Place: Yoshiike Ryokan (Accommodation/Day-Use Facility)
The Japanese garden here, spanning approximately 10,000 square meters, is simply stunning. The historic buildings and tea rooms are designated as Tangible Cultural Properties, adding a sense of romance to the history. The six rich natural hot spring sources ensure 100% natural, free-flowing water without circulation, added water, or heating. Available for both overnight stays and day use! 🏯
・Water Volume: 43,200 liters per hour
・Water Quality: Sodium calcium chloride spring
・Fee: ¥2,200
・Note: No heating, circulation, or disinfection
🌟 4th Place: Kamaya (Day-Use Facility)
This hidden gem is a personal favorite that I’d rank first. Kamaya is a kamameshi (rice pot) restaurant, but if you ask, they’ll let you use their natural hot spring in the back. Known for its highly concentrated sulfur springs, it’s famous among hot spring enthusiasts. The kind grandma who runs the place will prepare your meal while you enjoy a leisurely soak in the onsen. It’s a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of visiting a countryside grandmother’s home in Japan. 🍚
・Water Quality: Acidic calcium sulfate chloride spring
・pH: 2.0
・Fee: ¥750
・Note: No heating, circulation, or disinfection
🏖️ 5th Place: Hotel Indigo Gora
If you prefer not to be naked in the hot spring, Hotel Indigo’s hot spring is swimsuit-friendly, allowing families, couples, and friends to relax together. Tattoos are allowed. However, this facility uses treated natural hot spring water, including disinfection, added water, heating, and circulation, so it’s not a natural free-flowing hot spring. 👙
・Water Quality: Sodium calcium alkaline spring
・pH: 8.6
・Fee: ¥1,500
・Note: Heating, circulation, and disinfection applied
📌 Special Mention:
Did you know there are natural hot springs even within Tokyo? Particularly in the western areas like Shinagawa and Kamata, many public baths use natural hot spring water. Most of these feature black water, known for its skin benefits. Find the perfect sento for you and enjoy a relaxing soak! 🛁
