I have barely tried to do tatting. I love the way it looks and that it is a small on the go type of craft I can take with me, but I have not tried it too much because I am a chicken. My biggest struggle, after learning to make something was the thought of how to read a pattern, so that you for your video on this. Very helpful. Perhaps you already have a video on this, but I would love for you to do a combined video on reading the pattern and then showing us how to do it. While I found your video terrific, I am SO new that the explanation on the double row pattern and the one where you said it was for edging on something like a handkerchief, I somewhat understand the pattern but don't understand how it actually do it. If you already have a video on this please share. If not, can you at some point, make a video using these patterns you have explained in this video and show how to actually do it. Thanks again. I just need you to come live near me in Ohio and give me in person lessons. LOL! I am so bad at this stuff. But I love it.

Hope you found my videos on the topics you mentioned? And hope tatting is going well for you!? Last year, I had a new baby and was very out of touch with replying to comments. Just getting back in touch with everyone now. Really appreciate your comment and sorry for not being there for you when you were looking for answers. Happy creating!

Hi Rustikate, Thank you for all your instruction. My question is: When I don't have the pattern instructions, how should I do it?

Thank you I just get confused when I should reverse the work or not after a ring or chain in diagrams, because it is not saying. Do you have a way to see it? Also some diagrams a have they don’t have the starting point indicating, not letters or arrows 🤗 Do you have a way to know where it is supposed to start
@RustiKate

A lot of very old patterns don't indicate when to reverse work either, which also makes it tough at first. I did a video on that several years back. You can find the video on my channel and there is also a link to it in the post for this video on my website ( www.rustikate.com/tatting/how-to-read-a-tatting-diagram-pattern ) . The post also has a few basic tips on where to start too. I plan to make another video on diagrams in the near future, and will actually make a project from a diagram in it, I will try to offer more tips and info in that one. Hope this helps! :)

How come directions never tell you how long the tail should be to begin with?
@RustiKate
2 жыл бұрын
Directions always seem to assume a lot of things. I use a 2 foot long tail as a rule for small to medium projects (from experience). 2-foot tail and then shorter or longer threat loop between my needle and thread ball, 2 feet for smaller projects, 3 for medium, etc.

Thank you for taking on this topic. Can you say anything about the differences between patterns for needle tatting and those for shuttle tatting? I always wonder if any shuttle pattern can be made by needle tatting. Thanks for all your advice.

Thank you so much! I'm new to tatting and am learning just to repair an older set of pillowcases that have a tatting edge. I am confused by the pattern so apart from learning the skill I am hoping to learn how the original pattern was formed. Tatting is beautiful and your use of your thumb instead of always the finger seems to work better me as well.
