I'm a self taught artist I've been watching tons and tons of videos and paid online classes and tattooing friends and myself I've never went to a shop to ask for an apprenticeship cuz to me tattooing is based on artistic freedom and I don't want to rely on someone to slave me for a year to teach me some stuff that I already know. It's a bumpy road a head of us self taught artists and with each day we learn something new and improve and be proud of ourselves. But there's one important thing in my opinion don't look at it like its a business and forget that it's art. Cheers to all of you we all struggle with some stuff and like anything practice makes perfect don't give up because someone told you ur not good enough. IDK if any of my words made sense

Now I'm flat broke and It's become apparent that I'm just the shops slave but the biggest problem I'm having is finding another studio that will accept me after being taught by somebody else even though I have real skin experience. In all honesty I'm just sick of shop owners and their egos and my best bet is to tattoo self taught.

I’m self taught. (eventually had an apprenticeship so I could get licensed) Teaching yourself is a long tough road, Lots of ups and downs, and you really have to be dedicated. Obviously an apprenticeship, with the right mentor, is preferable... but a lot of people in the trade are narcissistic with crappy art skills, afraid of competition, and ridiculously dogmatic. As long as you keep things sterile, I don’t think there is anything wrong with teaching yourself... imo a self taught artist is gonna be more dedicated to the trade..

Same story here... though I'm starting my journey now... I'm an artist already, but not a single studio will touch me. I know my art is good. My personality isn't shit either. There's insane levels of ego in my state (New York) and if you haven't apprenticed under someone already none of the shops will take you. I have been looking for an apprenticeship for 10 years... I finally am fed up. I respected the craft until I realized literally this last week, that if I don't do it... I'll just die not doing it... I've still respect the craft but I'm done waiting. My goal is to practice up to a point where I'm confortable to start on skin and then sleeve one of my legs before touching anyone else. *shrugs* no other option. the tattoo industry is too exclusionary. fuck it. ONE person said he'd train me... and he wanted 12,000usd..... NOPE. he also said the apprenticeship would last 2 years and the first year i couldn't touch skin or practice. However, I taught my oldest son how to tattoo and he's doing really well out in CA. I taught him on coil machines and now he's pretty good with his rotaries. There are a ton of professional artists who have put some of the tutorials on youtube. My advice would be to purchase some ReelSkin, get an inexpensive pen machine, and practice your lines using a 3RL until you can pull solid lines. I've been studying to become a tattoo artist and I've been doing it pretty much on my own (whenever I can afford, I pay for workshops). I will certainly get an apprenticeship if the right opportunity shows up. It is just frustrating to see people who want to start tattooing not putting the amount of effort necessary to learn this art properly (studying as much as possible before tattooing someone, buying quality tattoo materials...), I think this behaviour is disrespectful. The most accurate advice I've heard. I'm self taught as getting an apprenticeship was not happening. I watched every dvd, read ever book, joined every forum and went to conventions. I eventually got a licensed studio and then stupidly partnered up with an ex apprentice from a previous studio where we worked. He turned into a narcissistic bell end, took on an apprentice/slave and eventually we fell out. Anybody can get a licence. I could believe it when i opened my first studio, i had all my work in files ready to show the inspector. He wasn't arsed? It was basically sink, supplier, insurance and needle collection. Didn't give a shit if I couldn't draw as long as I was clean? 99% of artists i knew were nasty jealous dickheads, posting comments on work instead of pming me or a phone call? Most people with a studio where scratchers to start with and as soon as they get a shop they go right up their own arses? I've watched quite a few of your videos. The one when you compare 5 year progress was particularly inspiring. I gave up when I had another child and the money was a bit erratic, plus I refused a few jobs because it was a silly idea and i worried about after tat regret although it wasn't my problem. The other thing was I was never happy with my work. No one ever complained but when I looked closely I would rip it to pieces and i would stress myself out of that makes sense? Anyway I might just dig out stuff in the garage and buy me a practice torso. Thanks for sharing and not being a top secret Masonic style help hoarder. Barcodes tattoos liverpool if people wanna troll! And don't buy shit machines and especially ink it will add years to your progress!

Lee Neary this hits the nail on the head. I had a similar situation with an apprentice of mine which, to be generous, didn’t have an artistic bone in her body but I persevered with her and she literally turned into a complete narcissistic scumbag which tried to ruin my business. So I totally get where you’re coming from in that respect. It’s almost like a switch is flicked as soon as people get a few tattoos under their belt and turn into complete douche bags. Obviously having this channel I do get my fair share of haters banging their little drums telling me I’m shit and that’s not how it’s done and blah blah blah. The funny thing when I get these comments from these ‘ink masters’, is why are they searching ‘how to Tattoo’ if they already know everything? Tbf it’s I don’t take it to heart anymore. I used to find the hate comments funny but now if I’m being honest they just bore me. Some comments must of took someone literally 20 minutes to write about how much they hate me and how much I suck and half the time, I read the first couple of lines and then it takes me 2 seconds to delete their 20 minute message 🤷🏼♂️ It’s like they all meet up and share the same boring script about what they’re going to write to me 🤣 Don’t get me wrong I’ll have a healthy debate with someone all day long but it’s the same type of person every single time that writes abusive comments.. simple put, stupid people. I’m glad you’ve took something good from my videos and I hope it’s inspired you to get your machines out again. The one thing I repeat over and over to anyone new or old in the tattoo industry is to just do your own thing and literally ignore the haters. They only hate because it makes them feel better about their own talentless shortcomings. Another point you made about picking your own work to pieces and never being happy with it is something I do constantly. I think it’s a positive thing to be like this and it keeps you grounded and makes you want to better yourself. On a final note, I wish you all the luck in the world and thank you for watching my videos. Just like I spend a whole 2 seconds deleting a nasty comment I’ll spend a lot of time replying to genuine subscribers like yourself.

I completely agree with the mentality issue - can’t tell you how many times I have been ignored or treated like an annoyance when trying to get an artist to work on a piece I genuinely wanted done - there is a huge lack of customer service aspect to the industry as well as lack of patience - i get it, I’m in customer service and some people are born lacking common sense however it is still a service and if you want business you should act like it. I’ve never come back to any location based on that issue so that’s what got me interested in doing it myself. Will I end up good enough to make anything of it? Who knows but it’s sad that the way these businesses are run that turned me onto it lol

My personal experience is going exactly how you have described, getting hated on by local tattooist not interested in giving advise to someone self teaching. I was even told I am a disgrace to the community, and I’m disrespecting the trade. I do not portray myself as a professional tattooist, I am learning, I don’t tattoo people. I tattoo on fake skin or myself. I will not lay in a tattoo on someone until I perfect the proper way to lay ink. Period … also I was asked if I knew any of the history behind tattooing, which was another reason he said I was disrespecting the trade.. I didn’t answer his question, but I do say this… one of the founders behind tattooing in America was self taught, he created his own style which still is used by many artist today, and if these hard neck rough riders can’t remember that then maybe they are disrespecting the trade.

So I decided to be self taught because the tattoo community is so incredibly toxic. Especially as a female I have some odds working against me, and that's what the male teacher I had last did. Sexually took advantage of me. I think as long as you do extensive research on blood born pathogens, proper sterilization, and cross contamination, then you're good to go. I'd very cautious about ink on ebay because just like the machines, there's loads of clones. It's funny that you mention 'Intenze' because I saw a documentry on fake ink about a year ago on BBC1. It took an original Intenze bottle of ink & then a clone purchased from ebay. The bottle and everything looked the same. So they did some tests on it. Straight away the colour of the clone was way off & also the consistency. More worryingly though they put the original & fake on a petri dish and incubated them at body temperature for 2 days. The original one showed no signs of bacteria. The clone bred e coli and loads of other nasty stuff. Further tests revealed it actually contained traces of human faeces. So that's why I say it's REALLY dangerous to use cheap / fake ink. The problem was so bad & damaging to Intenze they had to change all their bottles so you could tell which were fake & which weren't. Only shop from reputable tattoo suppliers. Thanks for watching!

There’s loads of decent suppliers in he industry and as you can imagine everyone seems to have their own brand which they swear by. I personally use Dynamic for black. I also use Fusion, Eternal and lately I’m absolutely loving ‘World Famous’.

There are decent human beings out there saying there is room for everybody, its a big world out there. Thankyou for that. I'm a semi permanent make up tattooists and want to expand into permanent body tattooing. Could you perhaps give some tips on the difference and what would be required to be able to transition into doing this? It would also be helpful if you could perhaps explain if there is a difference between semi permanent ink and tattooing ink 🙏

I'm just starting out as self taught, ONLY because every tattoo studio around here is either filled with "rockstars" that think they're too good to teach anyone, or the "artists" that work there SHOULD NOT be in a shop, my wife went to one "professional studio" to get a matching tattoo with her friend, the guy didn't even change ink cups between them, and now they're both infected. But I'm doing it right, I use radiant, world famous, and dynamic ink, I bought a cheyenne spirit drive machine, a critical power supply, and I use kwadron liners. So far I've tattooed 3 people (including myself first), and they're not bad, everyone that sees the few I've done ask me to tattoo them, but I'm nowhere near ready to start tattooing the public, I know this. I also use cord covers, machine covers, equipment bags, and madacide as my disinfectant.

Joshua Hale unfortunately the tattoo industry is filled with ‘rockstars’ and very entitled people. That’s why I made this channel to give balance to the many many ‘ink masters’ that sit trolling people from their ivory towers. It’s such a shame the industry has gone this way but it’s definitely getting worse from the stand point of everyone hating each other instead of backing each other.

"Paying your dues" is the most moronic way to justify abusing what should be a professional businesses agreement. If a person is paying thousands of dollars and agreeing to spend large amounts of unpaid free time, it's more than enough to qualify to being treated in a respectful manner in turn. Goes to show you how childish the mentality of a lot of tattoo artists and how little they respect the art if it's viewed as an opportunity to abuse someone because of their position. The industry is in dire need of formal legal contracts being involved to help create clear parameters and guidelines to protect both parties involved. Someone wants to waste a year of your life running errands for them, instead of teaching you agree upon skills, they should suffer legal ramifications.

What's your opinion about tattoo schools? I don't know if excist tattoo schools in UK but I found in Germany and in Greece as well.. It's about 120 hours.. They learn theory about how the business works, about health, practice on fake skins, different styles of tattooing etc.. It's worth it? I already start to learn by videos on internet and I practice on fake skins Thank you for sharing your knowledge.. I learned a lot from your videos!! You are humble and you look good guy!!

vagelis koios I haven’t seen the schools in other countries but have seen a few in the UK. The ones I’ve seen tend to charge massive amounts of money and personally when I’ve seen the topics covered and also the work produced by the actual ‘teachers’ I can’t help thinking it’s more to do with taking money out of people’s pockets rather than learning them the skills of tattooing. So for the schools that I’ve seen, I’d say they’re absolutely not worth the money for what you get. It is something I’ve considered opening in the future and I’m still toying with the idea. But seeing what I’ve seen from other ‘tattoo schools’ I would do it COMPLETELY different to what’s being turned out at the moment. Hope this helps!

@@JonoSmithTattoo thank you for your quickly response!! I really apretiate it.. So depends for what every school charge.. I asked in Greece and I found one program in good price.. 1150 euro for 120 hours.. Of course I don't expect after these lessons to be a master and to do perfect portraits.. Just I want to learn the basics about business, health, tattooing but I don't know what to do.. To go to this school or to invest these money on a good equipment and to learn by videos and practice?

vagelis koios Well for the foreseeable future I don’t think you’re going to have a choice to go there anyway so I’d say learn what you can from videos and then see where you are once all this has blown over. I will say though, quality equipment is absolute key to getting ahead with tattooing. There’s lots of cheap stuff on eBay but honestly, take it from me it’s absolutely no good. Spend your money on a decent machine first and that’s a really good starting point.

Before even watching this video, one thing that a lot of people aren't giving credit, is *YOU TUBE and the professional tattoo-artists who are making HIGH QUALITY training videos!* So the 'scratcher' or 'Self-Taught' person, might actually be getting better training than someone who is in a so called official apprenticeship! - We hear horror stories of apprenticeships all the time! If the person who is providing the apprenticeship sucks and doesn't really teach you and just takes advantage of you to be their gofer.. then you might be better off learning from some of these amazing, high quality You-Tube guys! ^ Comment for algorithm + 👍 'd #Paxus Rating: ☆☆☆☆

Hey everyone … I’m a tattoo apprentice in San Diego , CA .. my boss has treated me like a slave , gas lighted me , as so has the artists. I’m a gifted artist I got in trouble for doing tats at my home by my boss even tho it was on family and people who just love me as a person and wanted my art . I’m looking for a mentor I want to take my tattooing to the next level if there’s anyone out there in San Diego - Oceanside area please help I love this art I really need a mentor thank you and blessings

yeah, man... I don’t want to be a slave. I’ll be damned if someone wants me to be a server. Why treat an apprentice that way? I’d rather just take all the time I can to be soaking information in and actually learning rather than be a glorified janitor who is on their way to learning instead of just flat out learning. So, I’ll stick to my own study and take the long way. If anything I’d rather be small time to tattoo myself and family rather than opening a shop. Once I build a portfolio then I could have that to back up my work if I do decide to start advertising

If you think a long time ago when there wasn't no apprenticeship that wasn't no smartphones or reality shows and licenses. Think of the guys in prison how they did phenomenal tattooing you had to go to prison to get those tattoos before I even tattoo parlors were even out or this or that these guys already knew what to do by culture that goes thousands of years back they already knew what to do about sterilizations or any of that before apprenticeships and that the people that just becoming more millennial XXX is so on that they need guidance and stuff or if your prodigy and it naturally comes to you like some of these Legends and stuff they do not have a penis or things you know with that hand pump the Polynesian cultures and Indians and today's world is just a structure of trying to get initiation basically like hells Angels you got to go through all the heat just to become a house angels that I think it's just a bunch of ball if it's natural to you tattoo artists and everything else just be your way just know questions and that it's just the way or no way
