Haha this is funny because I'm a "scratcher" and have fixed "pro artist" from shops work. I've been tattooing for over ten years and have an awesome client base. I even have loyals who refuse to get tattooed by anyone else. I tattoo outta home because for me tattooing is an "ART" and a true and loved "HOBBY" it's not my source of income I don't do it for the $$$ I do it because I love to tattoo. I started by tattooing myself, I don't buy cheap shit, I'm overly sterile, and unlike shops I DONT REUSE ANYTHING!!!! I won't open a needle blister pack or tip, tube, grip combo UNLESS the client is watching, I wrap my machines and cords with bags, my squeeze/spray bottles I cover, I even wear arm sleeves. You need to quit judging and assuming that at home artists are scratchers when "pro artists" only care about the money and no longer the actual art. How was tattooing taught to the pros? Not by watching a person or being a bitch but through trial and error or as a "scratcher" and evolved from there. A piece of paper that certifies my cleanliness is what would make me a pro??? No proving ones abilities and is what makes a "professional tattoo artist" dumb fucks lol.... By the way I have a full time job working 40+ hrs a week making a living and STILL make time to do tattoos because of my love for the ART!!!!

+Charlane Powell I had to say it at as it is. I know the hygienic and sterility that is required and needed but because I do them outta home this douche fuck wants to call me a scratcher? HA!! if I could post pics on the replies I would just to show some of my work but I don't think there's a way to do it. I have lots of machines all set for different functions. I could also probably guarantee that I'm more sterile then a shop. and this kid in the video is what? just a person who gets tattoos and pays out the ass for mediocre work? Hahaha a BBP certificate doesn't mean shit you know? just like tig welding and even arc welding (I do both at work) it takes hands on experience to learn and better oneself not cleaning up and setting up and watching. how does that teach depth control? how does watching teach bug pin mags vs standard or double stack mags? same with lining needles. it's learned through trial and error. sorry just had to shut this kid up lol but thanks for the reply!

@ryanavina605

MrGrizzly65 nope I don't don't charge anywhere near shop prices. I give a price based on the size, style, colored or B&W, and detail. it's just something I love doing. I know people who have paid a couple hundred for like a quarter sleeve tattoo where I would've charged less than half AND I would take my time (I'm very picky) and I guarantee my work. If a color pulled or the tatt healed with little missed areas (from not wanting to over work the skin or from the fresh swelling) I will finish, touch up, or fix it at no extra cost because it's my work. unlike a shop that'll still charge to even fix THEIR fuck ups I won't since it's my doing and my name/reputation that's put into the piece. Shops are more "get in and get out" so they tend to rush a tattoo cause they just want to get paid and move on to the next client.

I'm a home tattoo artist, some may say a scratcher. Getting an apprentiship can be really hard, and i dont really hang out in tattoo shops to get any contacts. Does this mean i should give up? I dont think so.. Im talented at drawing, and i have always been amazed by tattoos. I didnt start till i was 31, mainly because i thought you had to pay thousands for the certificates to be leagle, but the truth is that you dont have to have any, and there is no government training to become a pro artist. I think now i wish i started earlyer, and just got a machine of ebay and tattooed myself. Every artist had to start somewhere, and id say it takes ten years of practice and learning to be really good at it. Its sad that tattoo artists dont typically talk to each other. The chinese made machines work fine, and they have got alot better over the years, ive got some really solid ones of ebay. Dont hold your self back if you really want to be a tattoo artist, and i agree hygiene is improtant, so read about it as theres enough info on the internet. Get some green soap and a bottle of disinfectant. Some people go overboard with hygiene and bag everything up, including themselves.

The real problem is artists who have apprenticed, and "paid their dues," still may not be "artists." I've seen better tattoo work from a 12 year old than what I've gotten from seasoned tattooists. Sad but 100% true. Every artist starts somewhere and it is usually on themselves. If they are not sanitary, I would believe it's on them. Research and learn from the artists who want to expand the artform. This scratcher and DIY complaint is no different than a plumber saying you better call him up or go to the higher priced plumber for the perfect plunger work. Pretentiousness will pay the $300 for a quick plunge. A confident DIY selfer can buy a plunger on ebay for $3 and get the same results. It is not brain surgery. It's tattooing.. If artists had to complete medical school to tattoo then I'd hold them on a higher pedestal. Creating art of any kind is a given right to all. Some artists better than others, and it should be left at that..

Those cheap eBay kits aren't meant to tattoo people. They are for entry level practice on fake skin. Those generic machines can't push shit in the skin! The way I see it is if you wanna teach yourself, do it on yourself or on fake skin, not on other people! A fucked up tattoo can really fuck up someone's life. The problem is people just want the money, they don't care about the art or history behind it.

A scratcher is someone who doesnt do good tattoos (in terms or technique, scratching skin instead of depositing colour deep enough for a good tattoo, thats where the term originated). i have tons of self taught tattoo artist friends who are awesome and do great tattoos. Get your head outta your ass dude. If a tattoo is done well and looks amazing, the person that did it is an artist. Doesnt matter how you got there, all that matters is you're hygenic, careful and produce a good tattoo.

Here is some food for thought. A talented and clean home tattooer is a better bet that a filthy shop, maybe a home tattooer could even be tattooing at the same level as great shops. We don't live in a black and white world. Maybe MOST shops are better that MOST home tattooers, but that certainly doesn't mean all. For instance, in Arizona tattoo shops are not inspected by the state.

Hey! First of all- your videos are great. I just had a quick question, I have an entry level tattoo kit from The Tattoo Shop (online). I use this in my bedroom to tattoo pig skin, fruit, and sometimes my own leg. Would you condone this or would I be a 'scratcher'? I have never tattooed any one else and my tattoos are up to shop standard. However as there are no apprenticeships available around where I live atm, I have already got a portfolio of drawings so I started on pig skin. Would this be something you'd disagree with? Thanks in advance for your answer :)

First bit of advice...don't get a machine to get the feel of it! Whoever you learn from will show you how to handle a machine properly in good time. Best thing to do is take a portfolio round some shops. Most tattooists will give you advice on how to improve your portfolio even if they don't have anything available at the time. Go back once in a while to show them your progress and eventually someone will offer you something. Good luck and I'm happy to help if you need it just get in touch!

If someone got an infection from one of your tattoos, you would be responsible for their health care, and you could be subject to a fine and/or jail time. Most states it is a misdemeanor to be tattooing without a license. Of course there is a cost because they have to have someone to do the job of registering people and there is paperwork involved etc so they need to charge for the registering service but it's not a conspiracy

what I can't understand is someone that doesn't get an apprenticeship and "formal" training is called a scratcher. well if the same logic is applied the the "artist" title wouldn't that mean if someone has never received formal training like from an art school be nothing more than a doodler? wouldn't that make most "tattoo artists" actually "tattoo doodlers" since then actually never went to " art school". also I find that the term "scratcher" is used why to liberally.

I hate to be that guy, but if you're calling it a gun, you're probably a scratcher. But anyway, do you use disposable tips and tubes? (which is mandatory if you don't have an autoclave and know how to use it) Do you bag your machine, clip cord and spray bottles everytime? Do you keep all of your stuff and tattoo on different dedicated surfaces to avoid cross contamination or do you use your kitchen table? To me the difference between a scratcher and an artist is the level of professionalism. A professional at home will see his workplace as a professional studio and act accordingly, while a scratcher will see his kitchen/livingroom.

alot of mediocre tattoo artists have a snooty arrogant elitist attitude I can tell you from experience most of the guys and gals with the most talent arent like that I guess because they have nothing to prove.Paul Booth is one of the chillest most down to earth cats I know among many other NYC Tattoo artists I have known for years .Its funny how the real elite never act like it for the most part From the UK side I love Valerie Vargas ....she is a sweetheart very humble !Dont you agree?

My one issue is how do you gain the experience? Im 21 and in a trade (motor) that i truely despise. Ive recently decided im going to take a leap of faith and try my hands at becoming a tattoo artist. My reasoning because it is honestly my one true passion. Wouldnt at least getting a feel for the gun be a stepping stone? Im drawing up a portfolio as i type this but how would you advise me into starting an apprenticeship?

So that must make me a Scratcher i have learned the skilled learned proper health &safety requirements but my state doesnt regulate or require a License. Soo no certificates . People using dirty stuff shouldn’t be called scratchers they are amateurs or hoppy homey. So i must be just a scratcher since no registration is given to us Artist in our state ..

if your results are poor and you are unclean or chaotic with your procedure then your a scratcher, scratchers are ruining the indusrty these days cause there are too many ppl that think cause they draw they can tat, until their china breaks down and they have to buy a new one or give up...lol...too many ppl offering 20$ tattoos compared to my 200$ piece, yes since these shows have been aired, iv been making less money...like wtf??

Public liability insurance will only help you if you fall down the stairs. I think you must mean treatment insurance which used to be almost impossible to get. Just remember, even that won't protect you from a shonky tattoo, only provable contamination. So limited. The problem with all regulation and legislation is that it creates just as many problems as it solves. There is no silver bullet, and no insurance against stupidity and ignorance I'm afraid.Knowledge, ethics & gut instinct. Good luck X

Its not illegal in Texas and other states in the United States. Shouldn't is a opinion of an individual once again. And in the states where they are required to have license to tattoo have the same amount of scrathers, scratchers would scratch no matter what legislative you pass. All you will do is subsidize scrathers/irresponsible clients at the cost of professional tattoo artists/responsible clients through permits and licenses. That's just reality, i think your in favor a moral hazard policy

anyone who shops around for a price for a tattoo deserves a bad tattoo!I talk shit but I do have a few awful tattoos but in my defense it was over 29 years ago when I was a dumb drunk teenager ...I have a really bad lil leprechaun from Notre Dame with the fists its a football mascot "the fighting Irish"..embarrassing I don't even like football..guess I was a punk rock kid with Irish pride ...I guess everyone I know has a bad tattoo lol...do you have any tattoo regrets ?

Hey man! gotta question, and would love your opinion on. I admit, i do have a machine. But the only reason I got it was to know and learn all the parts i need to cause i im interested in it.. And i refuse all request to do tattoos on people because I want to be fully trained and and know what im doing before starting. is that fine? like
