Violin top plate - excavation of the fluting channel.
Due to the peculiar fragility of the spruce wood of the top plate, in order not to cause tearing and chipping, it will be essential to use extremely sharp gouges and carefully respect the directions of the wood fiber. It will therefore not be possible to dig the channel with a single cut but you will have to divide it into two parts by cutting them in opposite directions, changing the cutting direction also according to the curvature of the outline. Each cut must be done very delicately and by removing very little wood at a time, first digging the inside part of the channel from the middle up to the mark made with the marking gauge, then widening it outwards, working in the opposite direction so as to always avoid cutting against the grain in order not to tear the wood. With subsequent steps, the width and depth of the channel are perfected, always leaving a strip of about 1 mm wide at the outer edge at the outline so as not to make it too fragile. The final thickness measured at the center of the channel must be 3.2 mm in the upper and lower bouts including the areas facing the corners, gradually increasing up to 3.5 mm of the Cs. As the last step, the corners will be hollowed, connecting the highest outside tips with the bottom of the channel with a uniform slope, using a gouge flat enough not to dig them too deep.

00:06 - Violin top plate - cutting the fluting channel
00:11 - Starting edge thickness
00:22 - Mark a width of 10 mm for the lower and upper bouts
00:38 - Reduce the width to 7 mm in the Cs
00:48 - Start from the lower bout, always stopping 1 mm from the outer edge
00:55 - Gouge Wolf n°7 - 14.5 mm width - 11 mm radius
07:14 - Using the same gouge, dig the channel also in the upper bout
08:38 - Dig the channel in the C's using a narrower, more curved gouge
08:45 - Gouge Henry Taylor n°7 - 10.5 mm width - 6 mm radius
11:20 - As the last thing, dig the corners, joining them with the rest of the fluting using a narrow but flatter gouge
11:27 - Gouge Henry Taylor n°6 - 10.5 mm width - 10 mm radius
13:28 - Thickness of the channel finished with gouge
