Hyderabadi Spot Idli (Tawa Idli) Recipe
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 2-3 tablespoons oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 small tomatoes, finely chopped
- 1 small carrot, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 small beetroot, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 small bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup coriander leaves, finely chopped
- Salt, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Idli batter (homemade or store-bought)
- idli podi or gunpowder masala
- Coconut chutney or dip of your choice
Instructions:
1. Heat 2-3 tablespoons of oil on a cast iron tawa or griddle over medium heat.
2. Add finely chopped onion and sauté for 1 minute until translucent.
3. Add finely chopped tomatoes, carrot, beetroot, and bell pepper (if using). Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
4. Add green chilies, coriander leaves, salt, and red chili powder. Mix well.
5. Add 1/2 teaspoon butter and mix until the mixture is well combined.
6. Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts.
7. Pour idli batter over each portion, spreading it evenly.
8. Sprinkle idli podi or gunpowder masala over the batter.
9. Add 1-2 tablespoons butter.
10. Cover with a lid and cook for 2-3 minutes or until the bottom is golden brown.
11. Flip the spot idlis and add butter. Let it sizzle for a minute.
12. Serve hot with coconut chutney or your favorite dip.
Tips:
- Sauté only the onion first as it makes the tawa or griddle non-stick and prevents the idlis from sticking.
- Make sure the idli batter is fluffy. If not, add a pinch of Eno fruit salt or baking soda.
- Adjust the amount of chilies and chili powder to your desired level of spiciness.
- You can customize the recipe by adding other vegetables like cabbage, beans, or peas.
