NZ tax law relating to shares is very messy and arbritary. Does it also mean that if you buy a company that doesn't pay dividends (most dont) even if its listed on the ASX/NZ you would have to definitely pay income tax on any capital gain due to not holding for "dividend" income purposes

One of the most important topics to understand IMO - if only all these US companies were listed on the NZX or something!

You bet, or the harder but more efficient solution - review the tax system!

I love the idea of moving from Aus to NZ and getting the 4 year foreign tax exemption.. Im just wondering if investing in ASX shares is classed as foreign income considering a lot of them aren't under the FIF rules.. Also a bit scared that if I sell my shares after a few months the NZ tax office will class me as a trader and retroactively tax all my investments as income... would be my worst nightmare and cost 100s of thousands

We get taxed heavily for the welfare system, but we don't get any incentive to make investments. New Zealand really makes its economy really difficult to grow.

I'm going to have to watch this over and over before I talk to my accountant about a tax-efficient stock strategy. I'm still below FIF. I may not be doing it right but at least I don't have analysis paralysis. I'm currently with Interactive Brokers but it sounds like I will be taxed at RWT. Maybe I could change to Simplisly or Invest Now before FIF to be Taxed at PIR on American Companys.

Seems kinda silly for a migration country to have a totally different system then the rest of the world. I am a returning Kiwi with properties in Europe and now it seems like I got one more thing to worry about and which creates cost for accountants and consulting. Why is everything so bloody complicated…

Very useful 🤩. Could you tell us little bit about short sale under FIF rule? Is it going to be considered as quick sale or something else?

@@NZEverydayInvestor Short selling a stock is when a trader borrows shares from a broker and immediately sells them with the expectation that the share price will fall. If it does, the trader can buy the shares back at the lower price, return them to the broker, and keep the difference, minus any loan interest, as profit. Let’s say I have minus 1000 of Apple shares and $188K more in my cash balance(since I sold 1000 Apple shares@$188) on the First of April. Shall I declare the to NZ government?

@@thegogo11 I think you answered your own question - as a trader you’re going to be paying tax on all returns no matter the movement of security. Get some tax advice of your own to be safe

Is the tax share equal across the board or do the lower paid tax payers taxes go more to who
