Andy Kaufman invented The Foreign Man. It was a character that was so unique and what he did with it was so brilliant, it was inevitable they were going to make it into a running character. Like Pee-Wee Herman, Pauly Shore's "Weasel" or Ray J. Johnson. Andy Kaufman didn't like what they did with his Foreign Man--making him a sit-com character. He REALLY didn't like all these other actors doing the accent and making it all homogenized. But... Andy Kaufman is remembered. This show wouldn't have been what it was without him.

There is a scene with Latka's mother I wish I could find, where Simka asks Latka's mother for "the wisdom of her people" about getting married, and Latka's mother's comeback is just priceless. Taxi has some great scenes where two quirky characters play off each other.

You know where the two of them are headed after this scene😊. Afterwards, Alex consults Elane on how to deal with the situation, Elaine is shocked and criticizes him. Alex replies "She turned into an animal .... A GREAT ONE " 🤣🤣🤣

Legend has it andy was coming back from a Tony Clifton gig when they the writers talked with him on the phone about ideas for a mom character. He acted as Tony and said, "get me a mom that I could make little Latkas with" and they rolled with it.... Since he only came into the studio on shooting days when andy came in he was weirded out by the idea of such a hot mom

Susan Kellermann. No relation to Sally Kellerman (different spelling) but cousin of Barbara Kellermann. Susan appeared a few times in Starsky & Hutch as different characters over the series - I even saw her in an episode from Series 4 called Black and Blue earlier this evening...a very underrated and talented actress and clearly very funny here... Also, very attractive.

The writers of this scene expected the viewers to believe she and Latka lived in a one room log cabin in the woods with no electricity, no water, no heat, no gadgets, no appliances, no toilet , no telephone, no TV, no radio , and 2 buckets, 1 for gathering water from the stream, and 1 for use as a toilet . 🤣

Latka's mom was okay, but Simka was too much. Nothing against Carol Kane, but once Simka was introduced, the show ended for me. Still think, up to then, it's one of the greatest sitcoms ever. Nice to know James L. Brooks is still going strong.

@@TheKitchenerLeslie And Christopher Lloyd comes on an steals scenes too, then gets Back to the Future after Taxi gets cancelled. And Tony Danza got his own megahit series with Who's the Boss soon after Taxi was cancelled. And DeVito did several popular movies in the 80s, including directing a couple of hits. Hirsch was the start, but is probably the least remembered from Taxi, along with Henner and Conaway.
