The backstory is on another video. Jeff Conaway and Christopher Lloyd actually did this "back-and-forth" seven times before the scene ended, and CL wanted the interaction to still go on. But, the guys behind the camera realized such serious audience laughing would've just gone on forever and ever. So, the scene was ended.

Years later I caught Jeff Conaway doing a Babylon 5 panel at DragonCon and he described how they had to film a scene with him and Patricia Tallman in a station elevator several times to get multiple angles for the edit, having to reposition the cameras and take out one wall of the elevator car and such. In the scene Tallman's character is in some kind of fugue state so he has to carry all the dialogue as they reshoot four, five, six times. He described the filming of that one scene feeling just like the What Does The Yellow Light Mean scene and then proceeded to act it out through four iterations and doing a spot-on impression of Christopher Lloyd. Everybody in the room remembered that scene and Conaway had the whole place roaring with laughter.

I used the same line as Jim before my GRE test. Sitting next to what looked like a very nerdy, smart woman I decided to have some fun. After filling out our name, address, etc on the form...when they announced to hand in the documents before we started the test I groaned out loud and said "I thought that was the test!" The lady next to me dropped her jaw and looked stunned. After each section I would mumble to myself..."This is a disaster." One year later I saw that woman in a store I worked at. I walked up to her and asked her if she remembered me. She looked at me for about 10 seconds and then with a strange look on her face said "GRE test!" Seems I made a good impression on her.

This is a prime example of what a LIVE STUDIO audience can do for you. You would not get any of this with a “One camera” sitcom or canned laughter. Very few shows knew how to take advantage of the studio audience this way. Taxi was one ! cheers did a good job. Laverne and Shirley. Carol Burnnette Show. It’s like the difference between Saturday Night Live and Mad Tv. Mad TV had canned laughter. But SNL HAD to be funny, or you knew they were bombing.
