Hello, Senator Shelnutt and Representative Shedd.
My name is Maria Brindle. I am the President of Friends of the Locust Fork River, a non-profit organization in Blount County that started 34 years ago to protect the river. We are, for short, FLFR.
Sam Howell was a founding member and current board member.
Taylor Riverside Park is our newest project. FLFR has developed this public access on the Locust Fork River at the Hwy. 26 river crossing near Blountsville. The site, approximately one-third of an acre in size, was donated to FLFR for this purpose by the Taylor Family. Amenities include a flat parking area, a stone staircase down to the river and a soon to be installed canoe slide. FLFR is now transferring ownership to Blount County, at no cost, to be maintained by District #2 Commissioner.
Taylor Riverside Park was designed to address two needs. The first need is to provide a safe, public access point to the River. Paddlers, anglers and seekers of scenic vistas come from across Alabama and from other states to enjoy this river. And, Blount County gains economic benefits contributed by tourism.
The second need was to correct surface water runoff from Highway 26 that was causing extensive erosion of the stream bank, destroying natural critters and their habitat.

Taylor Riverside Park is now on the Alabama Scenic River Trail, at the head of a renowned river section that extends from here to Kings Bend Scenic Overlook in Cleveland. This 12 mile long section offers rock bluffs, shoals, small rapids, great biodiversity and a multitude of native species vegetation. It is a beautiful Blue Trail!
Your continuing support of CAWACO RC&D through our state’s annual budget makes possible projects like Taylor Riverside Park. Let us know when you would like to visit this beautiful corner of Alabama in person and we will make sure it happens. Thank you very much for your support!
