Fair points but with the full context that's fully not what she's on about: My friends used to play a game where We would pick a decade We wished we could live in instead of this I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists And getting married off for the highest bid Everyone would look down 'cause it wasn't fun now Seems like it was never even fun back then Nostalgia is a mind's trick If I'd been there, I'd hate it "Nostalgia is a mind's trick" !!

like she's fully out of touch in a lot of ways, and there are conversations to be had about her in relation to racisim, politics, the enviroment, etc, but taking her lyrics out of context dosen't help anyone.

Okay? And “nostalgia” will never be a “mind’s trick” for Black folks because our asses KNOW there is nothing in that time period for us. In or out of context it’s a weird thing to say, like people saying they’d love to go back to the 1950s if only it wasn’t so racist. WE never had the opportunity to think of that time period as anything BUT bad, so there is no “nostalgia tricking us” into longing for it. That’s the issue here. The privilege of being able to separate a time and place from the terrible things associated with it.

@rubyanactoria618

@@nikkibee139 that is definitely a privileged thing to be able to do, but she's acknowledging that. the whole song is about flawed escapisim - feeling so pained with real life that you escape into your own mind to cope with it, which can be (especially for her) a source of creativity, but can also dissasociate you from life & the people around you. she's making an example from an excersise she used to do as a kid, and then pointing out the realities that kids don't always know about or think of. i know when i was a kid i used to want to live in ancient athens, before i thought through the fact that they hated women & vaccines didn't exist, but i was nine and probably couldn't even spell "historical nuance". it's no argument that she's a ridiculously privileged person - even for white american women, she's a billionare and one of the most famous people on the planet, she's doing fine, but i'm trying to point out the context since i think that line in isolation sounds a lot weirder than it does knowing the rest of the lyrics & themes of the song. she's writing from a place of privilege because she's writing from and about her own experience, but i don't think there's anything malicious or incredibly out of touch in that song considering the rest of what she's trying to say.

SO i made an initial comment without the full verse and thought it cringy/tone deaf.... rn with the full verse idk i kind of understand(?) So i tried posting an instagram reel link 2-3 times and it keeps getting removed, and its by a creator named adianair(?)/other creators where he/they provide academic context in which the period/years taylor refers is always romantized and is not getting criticized( about social injustices like slavery/racism and women's lack of rights) with the full context of verse My friends used to play a game where We would pick a decade We wished we could live in instead of this I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists And getting married off for the highest bid Everyone would look down 'cause it wasn't fun now Seems like it was never even fun back then Nostalgia is a mind's trick If I'd been there, I'd hate it "Nostalgia is a mind's trick" !! she is trying to say (your/ insert person) simple minded thinking makes it seem like times were simple back then, but its not rlly, if (your/ insert person) don't account ( about social injustices like slavery/racism and women's lack of rights) thats why nostalgia is a mind trick. Its extremely hard to write that line "I'd say the 1830s but without all the racists And getting married off for the highest bid" in way where out of context it unintentionally might/can come across as ignorant/rude.

So u end up in an echo chamber filled with ignorant and cringe lyrics from a woman who is supposed to be a good songwriter. But i fear she has left that in 2020 when she wrote folklore and evermore

Jane Austen's literature and even Bridgerton are examples of the period shes referencing. And these are positive, romanticized portrayals of the period that for all intents and purposes is, without all the racists (slavery barely a mention if at all). It's idealized, rooted in aristocratic decadence, and moreso it's imaginary. Taylor makes a clunky reference to Austenite romance and it may fall flat to you but isnt exactly unheard of in art or media. It's also obvious Austen is pretty foundational to her.

This is such a dumb comment lol. She didn't say a good thing. She said a bad thing but then said, but "without it being bad." If you can't understand how it's tone deaf then I can't help you. If she'd wanted to say she wished racism never existed at any time ever then THAT would be a good thing to say. But that's very different to what she did say. It's just peak white people version of history. The same way men LOVE to go on about how good he 60s were back when they were guaranteed a house wife. You may not mean it in a bad way, but some things are best left unsaid in a song where you can't explain yourself in detail.

The lyric is from “I hate it here”, which isn’t a dance song, so you don’t have to worry about choreography, but she also said in the same breath that she also wished that she wouldn’t get sold to the highest bidder, which was a thing during that time. It’s common to wish for a simpler time without all of the negatives. It sounded like a little girl thinking and, considering she was thinking back to when she was little girl and playing that game of “what era would you be?”, It makes lyrical sense. Taking it out of context makes it sound worse but in the song it’s decent.

Except that you can't divorce the simplicity of the time, and the clear romanticization of it, from what was happening. The idea of it being an ideal, better time is built out of ignoring all the ish happening. That's just whiteness.
@fuzzywuzzy8679
Ай бұрын
@@segara04 it is not ignoring it, and it’s not just “whiteness”, it’s acknowledging that it was a thing that was more prevalent back then and generally accepted. Wishing that we could go back without having to deal with the negative because it’s known to be bad. It’s like going back in time knowing all of what you know now. If it’s Romanticizing anything it’s the style, like how people romanticize the 1920s and 1940s. Would it be nice to go back to that time yes, however I also wouldn’t want to go because women were so openly abused by their men, and a good chunk of the country was racist thanks to the southerners not wanting to give up their free/cheap labor, and we’ve moved passed that and are better people for moving passed it.

@@fuzzywuzzy8679 see that is the thing. The nation, not just the south, engaged in racism. There are literally books written about why what she was saying is tone deaf af. One was written in 2001 and gets updated (Racism without Racists). Again you can't want to visit that time and divorce what was going on from it. The way the nation was then was due to the racism that continues to today. It's just whiteness.

@@fuzzywuzzy8679 that time exists as a daydream due to the fact it was built out of the suffering of non-white groups. That👏ignores👏what👏was👏happening👏.
