The extend metaphors, between an innocent boy playing with his adoring favorite toy, solving puzzle pieces in the night when they're not supposed to be awake vs the emotionally turbulent manchild discarding something he said he loved like she was just a toy and now the toy has no boy (Toy Story style), because he was intimidated by the emotional vulnerability the relationship exposed hits hard. the juxtaposition between childhood innocence and adult brokenness is so perfectly eerie

the usage of "toys" and "dolls" and "play pretend" represents a type of child-like innocence, HOWEVER, like a bully or a misbehaving child, he destroys the "sandcastles" the narrator builds. from what i'm gathering, Taylor is illustrating a relationship she presumed was innocent and and she worked so hard to build it up, only to be knocked down (like the sandcastles) every single time. If she rebuilds it, it will never be the same as before.

I’m not sure. I’ve felt like this before and I guess the way I felt was, I was his favorite toy until he slowly broke me and then when you’re broken they don’t want anything to do with you anymore, so you’re put back on the shelf and left there. But you love them so you make excuses for them, so you stay and are played with like a toy. I’m not sure if that’s where she’s coming from but this song definitely brought me back to that relationship and those feelings.

For me, it's the lyric "I know I'm just repeating myself / Put me back on my shelf / But first, pull the string / And I'll you that he runs because he loves me" that really captures the denial that she found herself in, trying to convince her friends and family (and ultimately herself) that he "runs because he loves me"... And the imagery of a doll with a string in its back that you can pull to make it repeat the same thing over and over again robotically.... It's just such a strong, vivid picture she's painting of a loveless couple! It also makes me think it could apply to anyone who's been a victim of DV (even if it's not her case specifically)... How many victims repeat over and over again that their abuser does X or Y thing "because he loves me"? Taylor Swift is such an impressive storyteller.
@SwiftieSarah.13
24 күн бұрын
most songs made by other popular artists are just 3-4 lines repeating again and again, and thats the whole song. But taylor’s songs aren’t like that. each verse is a whole different story she tells. that’s why shes so different from other singers, and its just amazing 💗💗💗

It's true when they say the world is a very small place and is the same wherever you go. We deal the same problems, the same kind of (bad) people... Gosh, If I wasn't sure there's no chance in the world she knows "my" boy, I would have said he's the person she's talking about. The ability to make you feel like she's singing your story in the same way you would have done it, well... That's the reason she's so great and so loved. And she does EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.! So far, one of my favorites ❤️

By listening you already know what's she's talking about...strong lyrics..What I like in Taylor is that she always writes what's true, just how is is or was with a "boy". I love Taylor because of her texts and music, and she really doesn't care what other people think about her...that's also a reason that she got so far! Fearless...

Hi! My name is Katie. You might not see this Taylor, but I love your music! I wasn’t a Swiftie until my friends and mom really showed me that you are a strong, resilient woman. Your music could be taught in an English class for the outstanding poetry in the songs. This is one of my favorite songs in the album, and the wording is brilliant. I wish you the best with the next pieces of poetry!

The way this song especially describes our relationship and I literally called him “my sweet boy”, brb gonna bawl my eyes out. This album is bringing up so many memories and feelings but feels so comforting and healing at the same time knowing other people understand what I went through. To all of you, you can move on and heal from toxic and/or abusive relationships even if you can’t forget them. Sending love and peace to everyone🥹🤍
