I think people don't understand the way this album was set up track list wise, from what we've gathered, from ready for it to so it goes is supposed to sound unlike Taylor and be out of place because it's supposed to be the character the media has portrayed her as, while the second half is more personal and the real her.

I can’t help but agree on your rating from a songwriter’s p.o.v, a lot of songs lacked, I missed hearing real instruments, she kind of gave us all the good songs as singles so by the time I listened to the album I was over half the songs. I personally don’t like her working solely with Martin/Shellback and Antonoff. I feel like they made the album a bit bland. There were clever lyrics and cliche lyrics. However, from a fan’s p.o.v the album is good, it gets catchier the more you listen to it and well it’s fun to listen to while driving around the city. It’s a pop album. It’s a concept album and I’m sure the next one will finally let her express herself the way she did before. Right now she simply had to make a statement, she had to share her story. Hopefully TS7 will redeem her as a songwriter/musician.

How is it not cohesive? It begins with her shattered reputation and her reaction to bad media exposure and slowly though out the album you see her fall in love and reprioritize her life. The sounds throughout the songs are cohesive as well as the story without it being repetitive.

I feel like the album is enjoyable for the most part, it's catchy and fun to listen to (and making catchy tunes isnt easy to do), but the lyrics are probably her weakest since idk her debut? She can do so much better than 'You make me so happy it turns back to sad' lmao

I think you can't let Gorgeous speak for the entire album because especially Gorgeous is supposed to be a fun, relatable song compared to 14 other tracks that are totally different in it's own context. Anyway, I think for Taylor (I'm such a huge fan) on her more pop albums, she always has one or two weaker written songs meant for pop radio. 1989: Bad Blood, Red: WANEGBT.
@РутаАсадаускайте
6 жыл бұрын
jinny well yeah I'm not judging the whole album by just Gorgeous (which is easily the worst song of Reputation in my book). You're right, all of her poppy albums has one or two fun, silly songs not meant to be taken seriously (btw I'd argue that those would be Stay Stay Stay and HYGTG) but they've never been as bad as Gorgeous, I think. Like, they're simple but at least she didn't rhyme face with face, you know what I mean?
@jinholee1925
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I definitely agree that Stay Stay Stay is one of those songs lol. When I first heard it I immediately dismissed it, she has done so much better. Personally, I'd like to argue that Gorgeous is better than SSS, like at least Gorgeous makes sense in the context of the rest of the album. but whatever// As for HYGTG I think it had the same sound, but the lyrics weren't as bad as Bad Blood's.

Hi swiftie here! I really respect your opinion on these reviews and I think you helped identify for me what some of my problems are in the album. For me, each song has something great about it but it either takes time to get there or drops off after. Though I genuinely enjoy some of the songs you disliked. End Game is probably my least favourite as it felt bloated with both features and could have done well with one or the other. Again, I appreciate your views and enjoyed your take on the album. I like "Don't Blame Me" but can't appreciate it - for me it's obvious that she listened to "Take Me To Church" a bunch and the weird gospely vibe of love obsession stuck to her and she half-consciously replicated it. "Lord, save me" is a weird lyric for her so it's definitely inspired by Hozier.

That no one really understands what she went through in 2016, for a global superstar like Taylor Swift to go on a down low..It must have been something really extreme don't you think? You said she kicked Kanye when he was down but what about how she was feeling?Did you see the twitter and general public outrage after the kim calling her snake thing? For me this was her best album till date bc this album was not to please general public but was just for her and her fans.. And she said on the tour that she went into literal depression after 2016 that she didn't even knew if she was gonna do this anymore and that's sad As far as "her milking the situation" , people were anyways expecting and talking shit..Why not give them what they expect? And again..He is not right in the head is no excuse for bullying someone to such lengths that the person literally thinks about leaving a career This is what my take on is on your review...Loved your review And btw...Her relationship with Joe is still as much of a secret as it was back then (it's 2019)

Grant Doklan I’m not arguing with you and I respect your opinion I just wanted to say that the “two different stories” thing is the point of the album. She was playing with the person her reputation makes her out to be and who she really is as a person. She’s liked a bunch of tumblr posts alluding to that but I feel like if she did interviews and explained herself better the album MIGHT have clicked a bit better for more people.

christiana1458 I think the way the album is organized stamps out some of it’s potential (don’t get me wrong I still LOVE the album) But when listening to it in full, I notice that some moments just ruin any sense of momentum the album has. For example, I think ...Ready For It? and End Game do a GREAT job of opening the album, but I feel that I Did Something Bad takes what otherwise could have been a deep and interesting narrative and brings it back to surface level. The exact same thing happens with Don’t Blame Me and Delicate followed by LWYMMD. If the album were structured differently, this wouldn’t have been a problem, but it’s something that jumps out at me almost immediately when listening.

I totally agree with you! This album didn't make so much for me, I used to be (and still am) impressed by her song writing on songs like "All Too Well" and "Clean", by her ability to tell a story through song like on "Mine" or "Love Story" but now, the fact that I only liked 2 songs out of 15, and only for the music/production, is weird and disappointing. I think that maybe she can't write relatable stuff since her life is not at all relatable now, maybe she is not as inspired as she is when being heartbroken... Anyway, this album was a huge flat "meh" for me, with good moments but not outstanding enough. Greetings from Mexico and I love your videos, I always feel like we have similar opinions on music and diverse taste, I see you all the time, but today I felt like writing you. I hope you see this! I am a fan of Taylor but I do agree with many of the points you made in this review. However I do think there is more to be appreciated with this album as it is listened to more and more. I believe that the first half of the album is intended to be chaotic and in your face from ...ready for it? All the way up to So it goes... . This half of the album is literally split from the rest by the "..." in the start and end track of this half. I think this half represents one half of her character, the character that is presented by the media - her reputation. She is not denying these features of herself though, which is why they are still included on the album, in fact she accepts them as a part of herself, even if it is negative. The second half of the album, however (which I also prefer as you do) offers the other side to her personality, that the media does not recognise, and it is a lot more personal. I think it would be unfair to say the only reason she writes about Joe is for marketing purposes and that her happiness is forced or faked. As proved by her other albums, she is an exceptional songwriter and even if the more personal songs on reputation were not as well executed on red or 1989, she is still a person who writes about her own life and her own emotions. I do however agree that featuring Future on "end game" was a step too far, as if she was trying to force doing something different sonically that doesn't quite work for her, just for the sake of change. I recommend reading the Rolling Stones review (www.rollingstone.com/music/albumreviews/taylor-swift-reputation-sheffield-review-most-intimate-lp-w511359) if you haven't already and I hope that maybe you can take another look at this album and appreciate it more for what it is. Yeah I can agree with you on that "still little bit empty" feeling..I had it after the first listening. King of my heart and getaway car reminds me of 1989 ..but I appreciate the new vibe. I had issue with Paramore´s new album After Laughter in the beginning (die hard fan here), it took me few weeks to fall in love with it and appreciate the new sound. People do not understand Taylor, she's smart and people do not realize how much. She knows what songs are gonna be radio friendly when she writes so she does that. Jack Antonoff even said Look What You Made Me Do was not a serious song and they wrote it to be catchy and in your face. Also, Taylor said this album was therapeutic for her and now she's going back to writing regular songs. Reputation is not a bad album and I feel people are very biased towards it due to the drama and LWYMMD. He said reputation is all over the place and inconsistent and that's because that was her life these past two years. Reputation is like a story. It goes from the beginning of her life from this time period to now. Lastly, Taylor is 28 years old. She has been an adult for 10 years. If you think Taylor's music is going to still be about fairytale sand childhood crushes at this age, we need to grow up. Her music is going to mature and that's what it did. These male rappers and even other female artists constantly talk about their sex life and do it so wrongly. Taylor does it while trying to be less graphic about it and people have a fit. In my opinion a 2.5 is unnecessary and I understand that's your opinion but that's what I think.

"One minute she's being petty, the next she's singing about a new love." "She swears she doesn't love the drama it just loves her...uh huh sure..." SMH BRO, YOU JUST DON'T GET IT! The first half of the album is meant to be a concept album. The "pettiness" is completely intentional and she's doing it to make a point. The darker sound is intentional because it embodies her reputation as a villain in Hollywood. There's a clip from behind the scenes of the 'Look What You Made Me Do' music video where she says "the idea behind this video is to show that if all the things people said about me were true, this is how ridiculous it would look and sound." There are interviews she did back in the 1989 era where she talks about how she's "never going to stop writing smart lyrics" and she says just because she is transitioning into the pop genre doesn't mean she's going to release songs that are overly repetitive and don't make you think (as the majority of pop artists do, with the exception of a few ie; Lorde, Ed Sheeran etc.) Anyways so now what she's doing is basically EVERYTHING she once said she wouldn't do. She's writing these songs from the perspective of all the ridiculous personas that the media and her enemies have drawn up for her so that she can take back control of her own narrative. If you ask me she's a god damn genius. "We think we know someone, but the truth is that we only know the version of them they have chosen to show us." -Taylor Swift

I know this is an old comment but that'd be great if the songs actually sounded... good. At the end of they day, just because she intended for them to be satirical doesn't suddenly make them sound better.

I agree with most of this! It definitely wasn't as consistent as 1989, but I think this album does have some super strong points. I also feel that following trends kinda gets you to make your own, if that makes sense. I think that sultry type pop songs that are on this album work super well for her. This album, IMO, Is the most grown and maybe even mature, even though everyone thinks she's being fake or a poser for talking about sex or drinking but i think that she's not trying to hold onto that "Good Girl" image anymore because it's already been damaged. Last this i wanted to say is that with " This is why we can't have nice things" I agree that she was being petty but honestly over the past few years, she's grown so I don't think she's in the same mentality as she was when she wrote that song. Loved your review!

OMG I AM SO GLAD IT'S NOT JUST ME I WAS SCREAMING AT MY MAC FOR THE FIRST FEW MIN YES JOHN PREACH JOHN . I am thinking there's songs you will love and then songs you will totally hate that just feel unfinished and the vocals feel so underwhelming and basic...a lot of the sounds sometimes just feel so forced...and then I felt like 1989 Tay was 100% growing so cohesive so fresh...and then here we are back to the most petty bitter childish drama she's ever done...however, I love being able to sing or write about your life experiences, but this wasn't the way to do it and if it was it should have only been like one song that just went all out petty I could get down with that.... The songs I love, I SO LOVE. However, I feel like I have less songs that I love than what I don't like and this is a first for me. I have never disliked so many of her songs. On average there's maybe like a song or two per album... I don't like. I am very disappointed it's so hyped and I expected so much more from Tay. This is not a ground breaking album as many are claiming...Glory by Britney Spears was a million times better this and more breaking tbh (not a put down I love Glory the production is so good that album deserved so much more) There's so many other pop albums that came out that felt more fresh and mature than this album...Ok I am gonna stop. Thanks Friend!

Cami 1598 tbh there are a couple songs on this album that greatly remind me of 1989, and maybe even Red. (Getaway Car is a mixture of Red lyrics with 1989 sound, same with New Year's Day). And there are some songs that show a lot of promise, even if they aren't great. (Don't Blame Me, Dress, Delicate, Dancing with our Hands Tied, Call it What you Want) I don't think this album is as bad as Jon is making it out to be. Yes, I understand that after 1989 we were expecting more of a natural progression and that there are a lot of songs here that sound too forced, but I still don't think it's a terrible project. The way I see it, this is her experimenting phase.

I actually have the opposite opinion, lol. I love Reputation, but Red is my least favorite out of all of them. I'm a huge country fan (from Jimmy Buffett to Garth Brooks to Carly Pearce, you name it) and have grown to appreciate some hip hop and electro over the years. For me, Fearless > Speak Now > Reputation > 1989 > debut > Red. They are all relatively close if I were to put it on a giant scale and don't have that big of a discrepancy in like or dislike.

This is coming from someone who cried at her concert...I'm so disappointed in this album. I own all of her other albums, but I am not owning this one. My first impression when listening to more than half of the songs is that they are trash, forceful, trying way too hard, boring, easy to forget, like her music is just becoming a clone of everything else out there on the radio. I agree that New Years Day was just alright, fans were saying it is so emotional and you will cry, but it didn't do much for me, and I get very emotional easily. Overall the album didn't hit me emotionally at all like past albums of hers, it just did not stick with me. I'm genuinely shocked at the fans (or should I say fanatics) who claim this is a masterpiece. All the fans on tumblr are just kissing her butt since Taylor started becoming active on there, sheeps that will blindly follow anything as long as it has Swift on it. I can understand if you really like this album, some of the songs I agree are pretty good. But I expect to atleast enjoy almost all the songs from a Taylor album, not just 2 or 4.

elociN I feel the same. I am also dissatisfied with this album. She is losing her authencity by trying to be like other pop artists.Her past music was lot better than this album. Anyone who has listened fearless, speak now, red and 1989 will see her songwriting has also become of an amateur.

I have been a fan for 8 or 9 years. I personally loved this album, it is definitely my favorite of hers and I believe is very vulnerable and raw, way more than 1989, it reminds me of RED in the rawness of it. But I guess we all have different tastes.

Fan of hers for 10 years. I actually loved all the songs on this album besides So it goes... and and DWOHT. And her abc broadcast of New Year's Day was meh for me, but the album version did tug some heart strings. I'm very proud of Taylor, I remember being hesitant about her country - pop crossover, and how she got so much flak for it, but she really did well. I feel that same scenario is happening again: people cannot adjust so they dislike it, but Taylor truly is a master of transition and recreating her self. ❤

I agree 100% here on this review. Some decent/good songs but the album is mismatched cold and calculated like you said. What also put me off was the album on iTunes only being sold as a package and not individual tracks. Also the 'Complete My Album' feature isn't working so you have to pay full price even if you already have 4 songs at an inflated price of 13.99. Very greedy and scammy.

This is probably the most positive review of this album that you’re gonna see a critic give. The only song I actually liked was Call it What You Want. And no, the lyrics aren’t good, but of all the songs I listened to, it’s the only one with an enjoyable atmosphere. I didn’t utterly hate every song like I did LWYMMD (although some of the other songs I hated about as much), but I just didn’t like almost any other song. 1.5/10

Kris Sosa actually big fan of Swift here. N i liked the album too. But i know reviewers in general likes to rate how much they feel about swift rather than her album. For eg. Jon here n her worst score at metacritic likes to talk more about the claims than songs themselves. And around 5-6 music critiques were invited to a private listen of Reputation so u know where all the positive reviews came from.Anyways i think taste in music is really subjective.
@mikerivera373
7 жыл бұрын
Shubham Singh no it is subjective. I just prefer my music more pleasant and melodic. And that’s not to say I don’t enjoy dark or melancholic, I do, as long as both are genuine and melodic. The problem I have with so many of these is that the atmosphere is dark without being melodic. Many of the songs sound like Will.I.Am; a bunch of random noises being crammed together). I also don’t like how it seems like so many of her songs explicitly have to do with her image. Plus a lot of the lyrics are nowhere near as good as many of her past albums. Even on the second half of the album, which features a few more tolerable songs like Getaway (a creative metaphor), it just doesn’t grab me. Neither the atmosphere nor the sound in general work for me. Having said that, I do think it’s stupid to make a rating based solely on the artist themselves and not the work. That’s why I didn’t bring that up here. And honestly, I like Taylor Swift. I think she’s one of the most talented artists of this generation. That’s why this album is such a massive disappointment for me. And I know I’m not alone. If you keep up with the charts, LWYMMD, the lead single, suffered a huge crash and burn out of the top 10, in part because it received overwhelmingly negative reviews from radio listeners. And sadly enough, that song was an accurate predictor of how a lot of the album would sound.

Invidious if you’re talking about my comment, 1) I’m not a music critic, I’m a random jackoff in a KZitem comment section 2) I gave my thoughts on a music album. Even before watching, I knew you wouldn't give it more than 3 (based on the most/least favourite section). End Game, I did something bad, So it goes and Don't blame it on me are among my favourite (with all the songs up to So it Goes..), but that's what a thing called "opinion" is for. My biggest (and probably only) problem with songs is some very cliched lyrics (hello, 'love is a drug' and 'I feel good doing bad things' references), plus some toher lyrics were cringly. Overall, it's probably one of those few albums this year that didn't utterly dissapoint me. Though, I did have to have several listens before getting hooked. p.s. guess SS Swifites ruined the album a little for many people. They hyped it up so much that many had way higher expectations. I'm glad I ignored them.
