Conservation Architects Swathy Subramanian, Ritu Sara Thomas and Savita Rajan talk to TBIH's Kate Seymour about the restoration of Karnikara Mandapam at Kunnamangalam Bhagawati Temple in Kerala, India. The project won the Special Recognition for Sustainable Development at 2023 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
The restoration of Karnikara Mandapam at Kunnamangalam Bhagawati Temple in Kerala showcases community resilience and sustainable conservation. The mandapam, a traditional Kerala architectural gem, had suffered from neglect, water damage, and termite infestation. Rooted in ancient sciences like Vasthushastra, Thachu Shastra, and Vriksha Ayurveda, its restoration by EZHA and ARPO followed meticulous documentation and combined restoration with regeneration principles. This grassroots effort supported local craftsmen, preserved heritage, and inspired community custodianship. It serves as a sustainable model for Kerala’s heritage conservation, blending tradition with modern practices.
